Suffering from high expectations?
Dec 28, 2022, 11:17 AM
|
|
Everybody, including me, is hoping Cade plays lights out against TN. But, am I placing too much emphasis and expectations on it? Will I be disappointed if he goes 12-20-180 with 2 TD and 1 INT and Clemson wins 31-17?
After his two games in relief when he was a true freshman, I had the same expectation for DJ. I predicted he was be a serious Heisman candidate and Clemson would make the playoffs.
Just trying to not get so high that anything short of a dominant performance Cade would be a let down. Trying to remind myself he is a true freshman with limited experience. Trying not to think, "SC hung 60 on TN. Cade should equal that."
Anybody else thinking like me?

Your "12-20-180 with 2 TD and 1 INT" sounds reasonable to me. He is a freshman. He will make mistakes. We really need to get the running game going early and often to take pressure off of him so he can play loose.

Everyone needs to be cautiously optimistic with Cade. Let’s not anoint him the second coming and just let him be what he is. If we do that I think we will all be very happy with what he does.

like, earlier and in non-impossible situations at ND, and for substantial swaths of the SC game, and the Syracuse game, then he might be more battle tested for the OB. As it stands, he has some good showings, but not a great deal of experience in this position. Plus then Clemson might be 11-1 w/ an 8 game streak and bragging rights over SC still. The extra experience for his spotlight at the Orange Bowl would be mere icing on the cake.

Yep we jumped out too early in the GT game for Cade. NC had a terrible defense with lots of injuries. However they were good enough to have a plan to stop DJ. Cades mobility presents different issues for a defense. Hoping he will have a great game.

I think the test for whether he hits reasonable expectations
Dec 28, 2022, 11:34 AM

can't be gauged by any one game. That's the type of thing that will have to be established over time. DJ had good games, and decent games, and lackluster games, and bad games. In the end, the assessment of him was based on trends and consistency over the long haul, not just "this or that" game. I think it's reasonable to expect that Cade will do well over time, but the idea that he will **necessarily** be lights out in the Orange Bowl or any one particular game probably isn't reasonable. That doesn't mean it isn't a reasonable possibility (that he'll be lights out in the OB). It certainly is a reasonable possibility that he will be, but just not that it's a a foregone conclusion.

Many t-net posters only have one speed and one direction. They are wide open toward catastrophe or heaven and go from one to the other in a split second. Realistically things are never as good or bad as they seem. Cade will do well but will have growing pains along the way.

As long as the O continues to move smoothly. For example, I expect him to make mistakes eg a fumble. But if the O looks explosive and smooth, I’ll be fine with less than perfect.

The good news is that he has been hearing a lot of this since middle school so he seems to be very mature and able to compartmentalize very well. He will be fun to watch.

Anything under 200 yards would be a disappointment to me. Only Vanderbilt, Kentucky, and Pitt got under that. We only rank slightly above those teams in passing offense, but my hope is that we are improved from the season.

I would love to see him hit 200 yards., but his great performance in ACC Championship game came against a suspect NC defense. Not sure TN defense is a lot better without all starters. TN did face “better” competition where it just means more. Ha.

I’m only aware of TN losing one player on defense: A LB. Are there more? They have two receivers that have also opted out, but their coaches and fans don’t seem too concerned about that.

He was more successful in Texas HS Football than most people on TNET acknowledge. He is Drew Brees v2.

I’m looking forward to a QB that will probably have 50-75% of the playbook to work from verses the 7-8 plays that were called for DJ. Bowl games are hard to win anyway, especially for a freshman! Go tigers?

They'd do that if we won by 40. It's a STS thing.

Shakin the southland has been backhanding Dabo since day one. Clemson threatened to pull their press passes if they didn't knock it off and they had one or two writers who quit or got fired.
Those negative nancies go to STS and read the rhetoric, come on Tnet and post it as original thought. They'd get a headache if they had one original thought.

justifying and second guessing everything based on any outcome Friday.
Cade shows out and we boat race TN? "Dabo is a stubborn fool whose hubris has completely taken over his personality and we will never win big again. Wasted a whole season with DJ! What kind of blood oath did he and Big Dave have? Can't believe he sold our team out like he did."
Cade turns in a modest performance and we win? "This should have been a CFP game. If only Dabo had started Cade vs SCar - even a game like this would have won that one for us by 2 TD's. Hope Streeter isn't coaching him down now that he's the starter."
Cade turns in a modest performance and we lose? "Glad this wasn't a CFP game. Hope Streeter's bad coaching isn't rubbing off on Cade. His parents may want to seriously consider other options for Cade going forward than Streeter or one of Dabo's other old friends/players masquerading as Division 1 coaches."
Cade turns in a clunker and we lose? "Coaches blew it by not giving Cade enough live reps mid-season. No one should expect a freshman with 2nd team reps all year and no real playing time to do any better in a game like this, no matter how good he might be. Did we miss on Cade after all? Unless a QB is All World, Streeter is clueless. I hope Vizzina is the real deal. Maybe it's time to take up basketball. It was fun while it lasted. Dabo has turned us into a 2nd rate program."
There's plenty more material out there to work with. The narratives and trolling afterwards, in any circumstance, will be interesting. Preferably, it's the first scenario.

Your first scenario (CK performs great), with the exception of the line about a blood oath with Big Dave, is **already** supported by the available evidence. A great OB performance will only buttress it further, but isn't necessary to make the case. None of the other scenarios do anything to undo that reality.
The fact that there will be complaints under any scenario doesn't undermine any criticism. We already have enough information to know the QB situation handling from the Syracuse game on was bad.

The only way he is inferior to the former starter is in durability vs the pass rush. He just needs to be aware and fall and roll the right way to absorb those big bodies. Otherwise he makes the offense go the way it’s supposed to, including with tempo and keeping the D on their heels. Stats won’t really matter as long as the play calling doesn’t consist of 3 sideways passes for every 2 passes downfield. We should be able to make them commit to stopping the run and Cade will hit enough (we actually used the middle of the field with him in the ACCCG) to stretch them back out. But they will stop us some and that’s OK. I think we score 38 if Dabo doesn’t go into another shell with a two score lead in the 3rd quarter.

I have no numbers expectations for him. I just want to see a competent offense that runs smoothly and doesn't play itself in a 10 yard box all game. And when he's in and plays, we see that usually. I'm just excited to see where he can take us because the talent, skill set, speed, leadership, field vision and desire to win is there. The sky is the limit for him.

I expected a lot more out of DJ and do so appreciate all the hard work he did to improve between seasons. I never had expectations for DJ like I had for Trevor. I didn't expect that much from DW either but the QBs both replaced were better than DJ.
Cole's problem was Chad Morris. Bryant was just better than DJ.
Tennessee is going to score 35 unless they are losing a lot of players, IDK. Cade is going to drop half a C-note on that SEC defense. I expect him to put some points on the board. I don't care if it comes from passing, QB runs, handoffs to RBs or statue of liberty plays using the slot receiver as the handoff guy. I expect to see a 50 on the board.
My prediction is 58-32 Clemson. I think Dabo will play Cade through 3 quarters and relieve him after he scores on the first drive of the 4th. Playing backups at WR is not going to slow Clemson's scoring down. Backups on defense might allow 10-14 points.
We've had time to put in an entire new defense. UT won't know whether to carp or go blind until halftime.

An OB victory is good enough for me, although I would like to see positive QB momentum going into the offseason. I guess I would define that as: - 200+ passing yards - 30+ qb rushing yards (after sacks/tfl) - 60+% completion rate - No worse than a 1:1 TD -Interception ratio.
