NIL vs NFL Endorsements

Are there any rules in the NFL that restrict the amount of endorsement revenue a player can make? Could big oil, for example, pool together a lot of money for the Dallas Cowboy athletes they want to effectively skirt the salary cap?

If there is no endorsement cap I wonder why a billionaire that is a fan of the Bengals wouldn’t sign someone like Tee Higgins to an endorsement deal that makes it worth his while to stay in Cincy? Lower football salary due to salary cap but higher endorsement $$…

Figured someone here might have that answer.

It would be illegal for the NFL to restrict endorsement revenue (which is exactly what the courts have told the NCAA and now we have NIL).

Seriously? This is the United States.

NFL and NBA teams do that, indirectly.

That's why some players want to play in a "big market." Lebron knew he could make more money in endorsements playing in LA than in Cleveland. Shaq knew he could make more money playing in LA than Orlando.

And, it's not just superstars. If you are a starting right gueard in the NFL and know your salary will be about the same regardless of which team you play for, your agent will let you know that playing in NY will give you the opportunity to earn more money than playing in Jacksonville will.

There is no endorsement cap

But in the scenario you described, that is against NFL rules. For example, being the QB of the Dallas cowboys is far more valuable than being the Tennessee Titans QB. More national TV ads and endorsements and almost a guaranteed spot in the media after your career if you wanted it, the warnings are endless. But if an owner were to circumvent the salary cap the way you described, it's very much against the rules. There's nothing stopping someone from endorsing a product, but there is something stopping them from using that endorsement as part of the contract. It’s also bad for the owner and the player. The other owners would certainly turn on this rogue owner, they don’t want to pay players more, hence the CBA and players union. Also, if a player took far less on his contract his market value would plummet the next time he was a free agent. Cherry on top is a massive fine from the NFL and who knows what other kind of penalties.

uhhh, ROI. A billionaire can see that throwing money at a problem doesn't make it better.

You people have too much time on your hands trying to create all of these hypotheticals.
