Mickey, I have been following Clemson for more than 50 yrs. I worked for/with Bourret in the early 80's while getting my master's degree. All this moaning and groaning about the USC game does no good. In the past 30 yrs. the pendalum?? has swung 180%. By this, I mean back in the 80s, South Carolina had all or the glitz and glitter, i.e. Wide recivers and QBs. We, Clemson, because of our style of play, had a hard time recruiting a good skill player. BUT, we had the big uglies as they are called, the offensive and defensive front. In my opinion, we loss to USC simply because their offensive front and defensive front 7 whipped ours. I know that Dabo is recruiting Adams, the kid from NY and others but until we improve in those 2 areas we will have a difficult time beating the game chickens (as I call them). When good teams play, the one that controls the line of scrimmage usually wins the games. As much as hate to say it, USC controlled the line of scrimmage this past Saturday night and they won the game.

by the toughness of our front 7 on d. we had busts[more of the same in 2012], but we dominated scar's run game at the point of attack. even when they were getting no help from the offense, the d was holding scar's run in check.
as for the offense, clowney is a monster. we went away from running ae and mcdowell; i'll never know why. the second td we ran right at him and mcdowell turned it into his biggest carry. lsu[and i know we're not lsu] ran at him all night until scar was forced to take him out of the game for a bigger body.
i agree that times have changed and clemson has gone small ball. even the great spurrier put his own fun n gun aside to compete on a higher level.

The "fans hurt more argument" is wrong

I have been a coach and am currently a coach. I am obviously also a fan. What fans don't understand is that while the coaches may be able to switch schools and seem to not care, this could not be more false. Venables got emotional when he first got here talking about leaving Oklahoma (a school he neither attended or was a fan of). These coaches put everything into trying to win football games. That is all they do. They don't work 9-5 and then go relax and enjoy their salaries. They spend nearly every waking hour trying to plan and teach these players how to win. When this doesn't happen, the fans feel bad for themselves. The effect on the coaches is much worse. Having been a coach, I know that coaches have to go through a lot with a loss. They feel bad for themselves also, but much more they feel bad for the fans that they let down and most of all for the players that are like family to them. If you think Dabo wasn't hurting for those seniors more than you, then you are crazy. He has lived with those players and worked with those players. They are as close as it gets to family without being related. Coaches also have to live with the "what could I have done to prevent it". Fans just get to criticize other people. Coaches criticize themselves which is a much worse feeling. The coaches take every loss personally, much more so than the fans. Have you ever had to go home and tell your family that you lost your job because you lost 3 games last season? Until you have, then you won't understand what it's like to hurt like a coach does.

Uh, Thomas Green Clemson had nothing to do with the University of Maryland's founding. That would have been Charles Calvert. HOwever, both are Morrill land grant schools.
