Can someone explain to me why Penn St

continues to get the benefit of the doubt and is annually a top 10-15 team when then consistently beat nobody and lose almost every game against quality opponents?

To be transparent, I’ve had a deep seeded disdain for Penn St since they had the most horrific cover up in college sports history to keep their idols and their football program up on a pedestal, but even removing my bias, does anyone think they belong in the top 10-15???

Yeh sure, line them up for their annually scheduled “quality” losses and let them beat up the nobodies they play for another 9-3 or 10-2 season… I guess a big stadium and lots of fans will get you that.

Agree, disagree??? It’s laughable to me.

They beat everybody in B1G that isn’t named tOSU or UM - tOSU always being top 5 and now UM has been top ten for past few years.

So PSU is getting slotted in the 10-15 since they seem to beat everyone but the two big ones in their division.

PSU has had plenty of talented recruiting classes over the years. The problem is Franklin…he’s not a big game coach. Can’t beat the best teams. The talent gap is less that you think between PSU and MICH/OSU. It’s X’s and O’s Not Jimmys and Joes

1) Ohio State and Michigan are better than FSU and Louisville so that does matter a little.

2) How did we look against everyone else? Were we struggling or winning by an average of 30+ ppg (24 ppg against other P5) like Penn State has?

Right now i think UNC is down at #20 because their losses are bad (UVA loss has to be one of the worst for any team ranked in the CFP top 25), and their best win is either 6-4 Miami or a 6-4 Duke team that was playing it's 3rd string QB.

I live in South Central PA, grew up in the South, most folks are Pro Sports fans Eagles, Steelers, Ravens, and Skins around these parts. As long as HC Franklin wins 9 to 10 games every season most of the fanbase are happy campers. Why they continue to receive high rankings in football is based off
years past performances under Paterno and its the only D1 school in the Mid-Atlantic/Northeastern region that has a decent pulse in college football. That said I agree with you Penn State is not a D1
perennial top 10 to 15 school in college football.

I rank the university as a zero and lost what little respect I had for the NCAA when PSU didn't get at least 5 years of football death after they covered up a baby ###### enterprise.

I also think the conference is worth less now for continuing to allow them to participate.

Anyone who thinks NCAA football is being damaged by greed should know that greed is the only reason PSU still participates in sports.

While the B1G arguably has two of the best teams in the country (I would actually say that Michigan is the biggest fraud until they actually beat someone other than OSU), they have to be the most lopsided conference as well. Outside of those two teams, there is no one else that makes any noise on the college football landscape. In addition, most of them are even too boring to watch. How the B1G secured such a large upcoming TV deal is quite puzzling. I guess there's not much else to do in the Midwest during football season. It'll be very interesting next season when the 4 PAC12 teams join and add much more competitiveness to the B1G season. My guess is that PSU falls into irrelevancy and even Michigan may become just a 9-3/8-4 type team annually.

As a long-time resident of Pennsylvania I feel exactly the same. I do not see the reasoning as to just why Penn State continues to be so over-ranked each year and subsequently underperforms. And in my opinion James Franklin is the most over-rated and overpaid head coach in America. He cannot seem to keep or apparently work with most if not all of the coordinators he brings in each year. And he has just fired his 6th offensive coordinator with several games still remaining to be played this season. AND I believe that over the past several seasons Penn State is something like 1 for 12 against top ten teams they have played! Time is now to call James Franklin and Penn State out on all of these facts!!!!

Part of this is that perception being the reality. And it started long before any portals, NIL or conference realignment. It's about markets. These markets, at least as far as the national media is concerned, started long ago. Back when we only had 4 channels (and that's if you had enough tin foil for the rabbit ears, people (and I will continue to use that as the national media) believed that there were only certain teams and conferences worth showing. The Big-10, the Pac-12 and Notre Dame. That, to them was college football.

There have been programs and coaches along the way that changed that. Bryant put Alabama in the mix. Osbourne, Bobby Bowden, etc. But other than that, they STILL believed that the national market lay in the 3 mentioned areas. Even when Georgia won in 1980 they thought that was a fluke because of Hershel Walker. Clemson in 1981 because Clemson doesn't really play anyone and all the other schools in front of them lost. They thought that Nebraska would take of Clemson. Wrong.

Enter the BCS. That was going to fix this situation once and for all. But lo and behold, except for 2 by So Cal, all the champions came from the south. Back to the drawing board. What we need is a playoff system. That'll fix everything. Wrong again! Other than OSU in 2014, the champion is either from the SEC or ACC (US).

So, in my round about way, This is my explanation about Penn St. They haven't won a championship since pre-BCS. They are however in one of those markets created long ago. And the perception being that the NC should come from Big-10. That's why those schools get the benefit of the doubt. That's why Notre Dame is usually in the pre-season top-10. Rankings are and always have been based on the perception of those doing the ranking. They can't help it.

On a side note: Ever wonder how the Dallas Cowboys are "America's Team"? go back to the 4-channel days. They were on TV every game they played. How could they not be?
