I think we have too many question marks on defense to be "elite." We have some really talented guys, but also some holes, and serious depth issues. I am hopeful he makes them understand basic fundamentals and gets them to good.
If you look at us this year, we didn't really need an elite defense. Our offense got dominated by UGA and Louisville. In the other games, we just needed a serviceable defense to win. And with a win against Texas, we would have been playing Ohio State in the semis (and I don't think we'd stand a chance against them with an elite defense). A top 4 finish is incredible. So Allen doesn't have to work miracles. We'll be a dangerous team with this year's offense + a decent defense.

I think your assessment is spot on. Certainly was hoping we'd have enough to legit compete for it all. But we have gaps on D.
I think we'll be ok across the front and have depth with the DL recruits playing. Amare should be a day 1 rotation. Hopefully the portal pickups will be everything we all think. LB, Ben will probably have enough trained for 1st string but nothing behind it.
We missed some golden opportunities to get the young guns a lot, and I mean a lot of reps. Unfortunately we couldn't because we were so porous.
Really concerned about our dbs and safeties. Can Ronan learn fast enough, and be a 1st stringer? Idk. Right now, I don't see any one who is that guy. Honestly, I'd like to see 4 hit the portal and then us dole out for a couple few spots...
How good can Tom make Feagin and Dixon THIS year. What about Gipson? You tell me. These are just my uneducated thoughts. Good enough with at least 2 more key portal pickups?

I think that we looked so bad last year bc Wes didn't have a clue how to use the talent that he had or package he should use them in!!!

I think we have better than average defensive players. I think we have some studs on the DL. At least on elite CB. I’m thinking our defensive system was part of the problem s much as personnel. I’m trusting Allen’s system will improve our defense to better compliment our offense.

The short answer is yes, the more complicated answer is can he get some guys to buy into positions that they may not be used to playing in his scheme. I think there is a big improvement next season, and if this team is as improved as we all think it can be, then we’ll get the recruits to fill the proper holes in the future. I’d really like to get a few of those PSU guys to come to CU in the portal and fill in some of our deficiencies.

I think the answer to your question can be addressed by looking at the two national championship teams from 2016 and 2018. They had elite NFL talent. We need better Jimmies s d Joes to help the talented guys we already have.
I think we are definitely missing a HUGE defensive tackle. Wilkins got a lot of accolades, but Dexter Lawrence was the key for us because it took two O-linemen to block him.
So, I think we need a HUGE D-linemen to help Woods.
I have wondered if Woodaz could be moved to Safety. He can stop the run and help in passing situations.
Lastly, we have to either recruit or to better develop our DBs so they can truly play man coverage (lockdown corners). They looked lost on some plays or had poor technique on others. I am hoping that was due to scheme rather than talent.

I don't think that development will be an issue with Allen as DC, don't forget he wants to coach his coaches to do it his way, and the ones that fail him will be gone when the season is over!!!

I think that you know the answer of making it elite in 15 minute is no. But he can make some heck of improvements during spring practice and Fall practice, and by midseason with some of the best talent than he's coached in a long time, he'll probably have a top 5 D in the country!!!
