When was the last time you heard of a school from a major football conference sitting a player or dismissing them from the team due to Poor Academic Performance? I can't remember hearing about one since Old Rover was a fetal pup.

I think academics was the reason Grayson McCall stayed at Coastal

in 2023 after entering the portal, then exiting and staying at Coastal. Rumor had it that he didn't qualify academically for other schools.

But he entered the portal again and played at NC State last year until a head injury mid-season ended his football career.

Athletes didn't all of the sudden become exceptional students. When education stopped being important, the whole system jumped off the cliff and this is what we have.

Online courses, tests, quizzes, exams, papers and projects lend themselves well to players receiving a little hands-on help from paid tutors who are experts with all subjects and course levels. The result is most of the team ends up on the honor roll.

Pitt's starting RB missed last season because he was declared ineligible. They didn't announce why, but apparently it was because of academics.

From Clemson has always been suspicious to me especially the number of them.

Just wish I had 2 or 3 paid tutors in my day (1959-1966 with 2 yrs off to mature & get married).

They take classes during the summer when most students are gone. Most are taking easy majors as well, which is understandable considering how much time football takes up.

With the number of AP and dual credit classes offered in most high schools now, many kids come into college with at least 12 hours already completed.

Students used to play sports so they could go to college. Now athletes go to college so they can play sports. It's more polarized in the major men's sports where the NFL, NBA and MLB pay out lures more hopes and dreams. With only a fraction of these athletes making it pro the rest are left lacking a quality education that could be leveraged into a career. I had hoped the NCAA would tie some ticket/TV revenue to receiving a diploma. It would have given them a moral high ground in the fight against NIL. That ship has passed. Non-NFL talent like the 9 year TE at Miami will hang around as long as they can get high 5 or 6 figure NIL deals and if they're lucky have a useful degree. If not, they'll struggle financially as young men with dreams of the NFL, MLB or NBA don't often think long term.
