The Roy Philpott Show made me pause and think!
Jul 31, 2013, 5:47 PM

Listening to Roy yesterday. I think the vast majority of the time he comes across as the most professional of all the Talking Heads of WCCP.
But he raised good questions/insights...
Is Clemson's defensive turnaround vs. LSU in Atlanta as strong as I (we) want to believe?
Up until yesterday, I was supremely confident that Clemson would beat UGA easily. Not blow them out, but win by 9 to 14 and keep that type of lead all game long.
But now, Roy has made me pause and think. - Is Clemson getting overhyped? - Is the D strong and disciplined enough to impact and withstand a prolific running and passing offense?

Our defense will give up more points to UGA than LSU,

but our offense will put up more points vs UGA than we did vs LSU as well. UGA has talent but not like the seasoned def LSU had last year, especially experienced.
I say Clemson 41-UGA 30 .

I enjoy Roy's show. However, yesterday all I kept hearing was negative toward CU's defense, as if the defense that is going to be on the field this year is the same defense that started the year last year. I do believe that there are some questions to be answered for sure, but it's as if we are to think that there was no improvement at all.
Secondly, I wanted to ask Roy which defense he would want as his defense; Clemson's defense or Georgia's defense. Georgia has no idea what their defense is going to be like this year. What appeared lost in the conversation yesterday is that Georgia's defense also has to stop Clemson's offense.
So, I wasn't ready to jump off of a cliff like Roy appeared ready to do yesterday. I actually finally turned his show off because it got to be somewhat absurd. And again, I like Roy's show.

Believe what comes from a sports talk show if you want. That will make you less smart than them. They are the one's that listen and get their info from the other sports shows. Clemson will be much better in the secondary. There were a lot of injuries in that area MOST all of last season. Sports shows know more than NFL scouts I guess. That is why the NFL took so many LSWho defense. If they would have listen to wccp, they would have gotten more for their money.

There is never a problem with an objective look at anything. LSU and UGA are NOT the same teams with the same situations. He made a fair assessment

have alot of people let their fantasies runaway with them because of the last 7 mins of the bowl game...YES.
People desperately want to believe that this bowl game was significant but reality it is probably as representative of the current state of the program as was the Orange Bowl game vs. West Virginia.
Was the 2011 Clemson team the one in the Orange Bowl or the one which played the majority of the season...same goes for the 2012....
People have let their wishful thinking run away to a point that a good many were actually upset when the national mags came out and Clemson was not a consensus pick to win the MNC..it had gotten that bad.
Clemson is a Top 10 to Top 20 team who has been very one-dimensional, depending almost entirely on the offense to stay at that level, but they lost a large portion of that production for the coming year. Playing against other 3 highly ranked teams in 2012, Clemson had two double-digit losses, FSU\SC, and one near miracle comeback for their sole win, LSU.
So if people expect that Clemson will again be a solid Top 10-20 team then I suspect they will not be disappointed but if they are wild-eyed expecting to be the San Francisco 49ers and beating Top 10 teams by 2 and 3 TDs on their way to whipping Alabama in Pasadena, then they are in for a long season of disappointment.

to Bama in Pasadena, I'm looking forward to it.... just don't know if Bama gets there. Those double digit losses were to teams we led at the half, by the way.

I agree they may be the best team we play but this game comes down to which d is the best that night. I think our D will be better but this may also be the best O we face all season so I guess the question will be how much better is our D this year. I also think that if Usuck finds a way to beat Uga then they may be the best team we play all year. If they beat Uga they have a good chance of being undefeated when we meet in Nov. If we both beat Uga then we both could be undefeated in Nov. but we still have FSU and Usuck has no one on their sch. as good as FSU.

It is never as good as it seems nor is it ever as bad as it seems.
The D against LSU could be due to LSU having a very poor offense and The Mad Hatter thought he could get a first down to end the game by throwing, something they did poorly all year.
That seems bad but maybe not as bad as it seems due to another year with V a D Cord etc
The UGA defense will not be a pushover as many on here seem to think. They will be a young D and Clemson gets to break them in.
That looks pretty good for a bigtime Clemson offense but again maybe never as good as it seems as they are a bigtime program with big time recruits ready to step in

surprising. They threw for well over 300 yards against Bama when they couldn't run it.

UGA has great talent/depth at RB (at least) this year.
It will be critical to stop the run with UGA. (especially Gurley as he is a physical runner and can keep Clemson's offense on the sideline) It would be nice to find a way to force them into passing situations. (which could lead to turnovers)
I don't know much about UGA's defense. (yet)
I have heard some of Clemson's coaches praising the defensive front 7. I hope they are solid.

You have to consider which UGA team will show up as well.
The one that played Bama or the one that played SCU???
Big difference.
Clemson isn't the only team with consistency issues. Despite the delusions of grandeur in the red & black fanbase, their football pedigree is quite similar to ours.

look at their record against usuc. i don't really like jimbo's coaching, per se, but he is getting the talent back in tally. i can see some epic division deciding (and conference deciding) games between us and the 'noles on the horizon, if they haven't already been the last few years.
