If you've ever said the Heisman is chosen too early because they don't wait until the last game to pick, you have no leg to stand on saying that how a team looks at the end of the season shouldn't factor into whether they get into the CFP.
Now, before you reply, think back to when Lamar beat out Deshaun for the Heisman.

One is a single player award, one is a playoff spot for an entire team. You couldn't be trying to compare more opposite apples and oranges here.

People tend to avoid doing that at all costs, all the time.
And QB play matters, yes. And I reckon it mattered a lot to FSU given their performance after they lost their QB (224 total yards v. Floreeda, 216 v. Loovul).
But the did have an impressive D and maybe they can use it to shame UGA here in a few weeks.

UGA. I hope it sends a message to the CFP they got it embarrassingly wrong, and the eyeball test is a weak form of judging playoff contenders. This would be the ideal outcome.
Ideal, and very unlikely.

But if Deshaun threw 6 interceptions in the rivalry game, that would also get taken into account. Alabama's game against Auburn should have dropped them 2 places in the polls. It took 2 miracles for them to win that game. The only reason they didn't drop in the pols was they were already the lowest ranked 1 loss team (and they couldn't put a 2 loss team in front of them.

Yeah I was puzzled why Alabama didn't drop after their narrow/lucky win over Auburn. In 2018, Clemson dropped from 2 to 3 after a win against Ga Southern, then from 3 to 4 after a win Syracuse (meanwhile the team is still undefeated at this point).
And then in 2019, dropped from 1 to 2 after a win over UNC, from 2 to 3 after a win over FSU, then from 3 to 4 after a win over Louisville (meanwhile still undefeated). Why isn't Alabama held to the same standard?

Don’t forget FSU was moved UP from 5 to 4 AFTER TRAVIS WAS INJURED. They had to throw a 3rd string QB who hasn’t even played in a live game into the ACCCG bc UF tried to kill Rodemaker. FSU would’ve had Rodemaker as the starter, and he would’ve had a month to prepare.
It’s okay to admit the CFP committee did the wrong thing by not taking into account the whole situation and basing it off of a one game performance by FSU.

Except Bama has laid out evidence that they are very beatable by terrible teams and they have a streaky offense at best. Early in the year struggled with USF, late in the year needed a miracle play to beat a terrible Auburn team. All alabama really did was expose UGA. I firmly believe FSU will beat UGA barring Verse and page opting out. Also losing by 10 at home is crazy.

I cannot believe we are still arguing the minutiae of this while everyone seems to keep missing the overall.
Every year from August to October people outside the sport, the Associated Press, ranks teams based on any number of reasons. Mainly, who they THINK is the better team. Who they BELEIVE to be the best. Get ranked towards the top and don't lose, and you have a shot for...
In October a smaller group of outsiders, the committee, ranks these teams based on who they THINK is the better team. This list also fluctuates with wins and losses. But it is still a subjective list of teams.
We keep buying into this ranked vs ranked, until the end. Then we complain over which team gets left out of this arbitrary process.
In the old days we complained that the AP/UPI polls determined the champion. Then we had the BCS. based on the same system. But at least we got a #1 vs #2 game. Still not happy. Enter the playoff era. Still, based on the same system we had years ago. The problem? There are 5 conferences vying for 4 spots. Again, left up to those who THINK are the 4 best teams.
The committee had the opportunity here to do the right thing. Take four of the conference champions; Michigan, Washington and FSU. Take conference champion Texas over Alabama because Texas has already beaten Alabama. But they didn't have the guts to leave the SEC out of it. Speaking of gutless acts, They could have gone a step further. Knock Michigan out for admittingly cheating, then take Alabama. IMHO Michigan shouldn't have even been allowed to compete for the Big10 Championship.

"Doing the right thing" is not "taking the four champions."
Doing the right thing is picking the four best teams for the playoffs. I've heard a lot of talk about why FSU deserved a spot. I have heard little argument about why they are one of the four strongest teams.

Taking the 4 conference champions is deciding the issue on the field. You made it to you Championship. You won it. You're in. That's the only "right" thing to do. And since, as I said, there are 4 spots for 5 teams someone gets left out. Since one conference champ has already beaten another, that's the one out.
Your point to me is the question, "What are we actually trying to do here?". 4 best teams? Teams that'll be the most entertaining? Coverage from coast to coast? How many Dr. Pepper's can we sell? Trying to determine who is the NCAA National Champion in football? Can we doo all those at once? Sure. Only not this year. An undefeated conference champion was left out of the opportunity to compete for the national title. In favor of a team some THINK is better or has a better shot at it. I ask you, Which one of these is "deserved"?

Winning your conference doesn't mean you're the strongest team.
Dec 4, 2023, 3:11 PM
|
|
If FSU played one month from now, would they still beat UGA?
Would they still beat Alabama?
If your answer is yes, then you have a good case as to why they should be included.
If your answer is no, then you understand my perspective.
I think the CFP's job is to pick the four strongest teams for the playoffs. Their record/SoS/"style points" get them into the conversation -- 95% of the way there. That last 5% is how competitive they will be.
If you want to convince me, then convince me that either FSU is still in the top 4 in terms of strength, or that FSU deserves a spot in the CFP even if they're not competitive in the top 4. I have yet to read an argument on here that does either.

Their record: 13-0 SOS: They beat 3 ranked teams and few good unranked to get there "Style Points" (clearly the most subjective): I'll say doing it all with 3 different starters at QB.
Which leaves us to the last 5%. Which, by your reckoning, is what kept them out.
Justice is served huh? Why hinge the whole thing on future or possible "what-ifs"?

I just find this somewhat comical. As Deepthroat said in All the President's Men, "you're missing the overall".
It's not who's in or out. It's the process. Why FSU and not Michigan? Michigan won their conference championship. Michigan beat 3 ranked teams this year. Michigan also beat ECU (2-10), UNLV (9-4 in the Mountain West), Bowling Green (7-5 in the Mid-American), Rutgers (6-6), Nebraska (5-7), Minnesota (5-7), Indiana (3-9), Mich St. (4-8), Purdue (4-8), Maryland (7-5). And Admitted to cheating to overcome such a schedule. Yeah, I know, they probably didn't cheat after they were caught. But, point made.
I'll tell you why they weren't left out. Because someone or group of someones THINKS that Michigan is a better team. Why are they a better team? Because someone THOUGHT Ohio St was better. Someone THOUGHT Penn St. was better. The perception becomes the reality.
And for some reason, thinking expanding to 12 will make this all better. To me, it will just open a whole new range of questions. Why does an 8-4 Miss St. get in? Why does a 8-4 Clemson team get left out? for the same dang reason I am arguing now.

USuC is a power 5 team. I would not consider beating them any sort of major accomplishment. It just feels good and it's something you can remind your coot coworkers of every Friday.

FSU matches up with Bama and Michigan well and that's with no QB. Neither are a scary offense, could easily see them keeping it tight enough to "steal a win". When FSU beats UGA with a back up qb what's your next excuse?

In an expanded format you're right.

In a 4-spot playoff, an eye test by the CFP is the only way to try to get the 4 best teams.

Dude, you aren't comparing apples and oranges. You are comparing a toasted marshmallow to a cactus shaped like a dck.

Your logical fallacy is: false equivalence. The Heisman and the CFP are completely unrelated.

And if that was their last, it'd be UGA in, and not them.***
