Article on Clemson players from the state of Alabama

Aug 13, 2008, 4:06 PM

http://www.al.com/alabama/mobileregister/index.ssf?/base/sports/1218446126271460.xml&coll=3

Thought yall might enjoy, sorry if it's been posted previously (it's from Mon).

BTW as I understand it from my perch in the state of Mississippi, yall got a guy a lot of Bama fans wish Alabama had room for in Antoine McClain. Rough around the edges, but a real good athlete with lots of potential.

Roll Tide,
Phillip

Had room for?

Aug 13, 2008, 4:08 PM

Don't kid yourself. Saban signed over 30 players as it was. If McClain had wanted to sign with Bama, they would have made room for him. Saban wanted him badly, Tommy just went in and got him.

Keep chasing those windmills, Steve!

Re: Had room for?

Aug 13, 2008, 4:21 PM

Bama signed 3 OL. No room for McClain is what I said. Story I heard is he tried to commit! I'm sure the story's different in S. Carolina. But what I've heard is Aub. and Bama backed off him. For a long time it was thought grades were an issue, along with as I stated his development wasn't as advanced as some other players, but he has tons of potential.

Geez I come here comment and post with nothing but humility and ANYTHING that someone might disagree with is termed I'm "kidding" myself... it's just the story. Like I said I'm sure it's told differently in S. Carolina. I'm paying a compliment, and not it wasn't back handed, and that's not good enough??? wow!

Roll Tide,
Phillip

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Come on, man.

Aug 13, 2008, 4:24 PM

Can you honestly not see how anyone would take that as a shot?

He was one of the top players in our recruiting class and you are stating that the only reason he signed with Clemson is because Bama "didn't have room for him?"

You could maybe sell that if Saban seemed even remotely concerned with limiting his class to 25. However, he signed 33, what is 1 more?

McClain was one of the top rated tackles in the country. Any coach would have made room for him.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Keep chasing those windmills, Steve!

McClain was #2 on our board behind Cordy Glenn.

Aug 13, 2008, 5:28 PM

McClain was told his offer was conditional on Glenn's decision, even though McClain wanted to commit several times. When Glenn committed to UGA, we went back to McClain who decided then decided to commit to Clemson.

The real steal from Alabama wasn't McClain, but Ben Jones to UGA. That kid was an underrated player who will start this year. Bottom line, ya'll got a good player in McClain

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

let's see...

Aug 13, 2008, 4:27 PM [ in reply to Re: Had room for? ]

come on opponents board, infer that CU signed a highly rated player beacuse Bama didnt have room, and expect nothing but warm and fuzzy responses.... yeah that sounds about right.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Said nothing derogatory about the young man or CU

Aug 13, 2008, 4:33 PM

It's a difference in evaluation/opinion from the respective coaching staff. I said NOTHING derogatory about the young man or Clemson! Went on to say that alot of Bama fans wanted the young man! Was paying a compliment! Don't be so defensive, and I'll try to be more careful with what my post might "infer".

Roll Tide,
Phillip

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just stick with the facts and you will be OK

Aug 13, 2008, 4:37 PM

He had an offer in hand from both Auburn and Alabama, among many others. He chose Clemson.

As good as Alabamas class was, they wouldn't turn down a 5.9 4-star OL when one of their 3 signees was a 5.8 and they had miscellaneous signees as low as 5.4 or 5.5.

Now, the article was about Maye. You would have made a lot more sense saying "Gee all the hype around Maye and we didn't offer him." True, you didn't. Clemson was the biggest name to offer him and even South Carolina and Southern Miss had withdrawn offers at the last minute.

Re: Just stick with the facts and you will be OK

Aug 13, 2008, 4:54 PM

Tommy Bowden nor Nick Saban gives a hoot what rivals/scout have to say about anyone, it's the other way around. Furthermore a 5.9 on whoever's scale doesn't mean squat to Tommy Bowden or Nick Saban. I did not make an indepth statement, just a passing comment, as such I'll explain further since some feathers... better make that fur seems to be ruffled!

1) Bama offered, ever heard of conditional offer, or verbal offer vs written offer which could still be conditional.
2) I didn't imply that Bama didn't want him.
3) I didn't imply that the young man wasn't as good as what Bama signed.
4) I made a point to say that a lot of Bama fans wanted the young man in Crimson.
5) MOST IMPORTANTLY I didn't imply or say that Bama could have had him "if they wanted him". It's just a difference in opinion/evaluation, it may have been that Bama was only going to take 3 OL and he was the 4th that tried to commit. Could be any # of things... relax!

I have in fact read that the young man tried to commit a couple of times but the staff told him to wait as they were saving room for others. He got tired of it and sought greener pastures. That's what I've heard. Thus making it true that Yes Bama wanted him and Clemson got him. Also making it true that Bama ultimatly didn't have room for him.

Never said Bama would have gotten him! Never happened...
I meant nothing derogatory!

Roll Tide,
Phillip

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'll agree with this...

Don't let em get to you. I'd wish you luck on 8/30 but I wouldn't mean it. But thanks for coming over here to talk football and not just coming over to start some trash. I always like hearing what other teams' fans have to say - so long as they respect our house like I would respect theirs.

What you did imply...

Aug 13, 2008, 6:36 PM [ in reply to Re: Just stick with the facts and you will be OK ]

is that he is not good enough to go to Alabama.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

good enough explaination for me. Come back anytime

Aug 13, 2008, 8:17 PM [ in reply to Re: Just stick with the facts and you will be OK ]

to discuss the game. I like to hear the other sides reasonable opinions. I hope we can sneak a few more recruits out of Alabama.

Aug 13, 2008, 8:21 PM [ in reply to Re: Just stick with the facts and you will be OK ]

What you said is what you said. And it isn't just rivals, he was a very highly rated lineman by every service around. And most importantly, just look at his offers list.......which INCLUDED 'Bama.

I smell coot here.

YOU KNOW YOU'RE AN ALABAMA
CRIMSON TIDE FAN
WHEN.....

1. You let your 14-year-old daughter smoke at the dinner table in front of her kids.

2. The Blue Book value of your truck goes up and down depending on how much gas is in it.

3. You've been married three times and still have the same in-laws.

4. You think a woman who is "out of your league" bowls on a different night.

5. You wonder how service stations keep their rest-rooms so clean.

6. Someone in your family died right after saying, "Hey, y'all, watch this."

7. You think Dom Perignon is a Mafia leader.

8. Your wife's hairdo was once ruined by a ceiling fan.

9. Your junior prom offered day care.

10. You think the last words of the "Star-Spangled Banner" are "Gentlemen, start your engines."

11. You lit a match in the bathroom and your house exploded right off its wheels.

12. The Halloween pumpkin on your porch has more teeth than your spouse.

13. You have to go outside to get something from the fridge.

14. One of your kids was born on a pool table.

15. You need one more hole punched in your card to get a freebie at the House of Tattoos.

16. You can't get married to your sweetheart because there's a law against it.

17. You think loading the dishwasher means getting your wife drunk.

The Greatest Alabama Fan in the World
She might as well have been sent straight from central casting.

She was fifty-something, a beautician or some kind of county court clerk if I had to guess, five foot two and 110 lbs if she was an ounce. Her nails were painted a glossy Crimson, her skin was leathery brown, probably from a few too many sessions in the tanning bed. Her hair was bleach-blond, her brown dirt, brunette roots proudly showing through. She wore a Bama tank top, grey sweatshorts and Roll Tide flip-flops. She was loud, salty and full of sass, in a Steel Magnolias, Ouiser Boudreaux sort of way (although I can assure you, she was no Cajun).

And she wasn’t drunk.

I was raised properly and conduct my with humility as often as I can. I don't tell Auburn jokes, or Clemson jokes, or any other jokes being "mean". I don't mind jokes so long as they're good natured ribbing! Besides after losing 6 in a row I can't think of any jokes that would make Auburn seem funny! The post was obviously not "fun" natured. Maybe I'm wrong, if so my apologies!

In the state of Alabama, when you get a divorce are you still legally brother and sister?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ummmm, you said we got McClain

Aug 13, 2008, 4:28 PM [ in reply to And I thought it was a compliment*** ]

because Alabama didn't have room for him. Then trying to explain that as being a compliment, you go on to say that Auburn and Alabama backed off of him because they had better OL targets. That's pretty much a slap in the face. Might as well have said, "yeah, you got him but it's only because we didn't have room for him and because we backed off of him and wouldn't take his LOI."

"I'm still pretty open," Antoine McClain said. "I haven't taken any official visits yet and I won't really have a favorite until I can take some trips. It's gonna go down to the end and I probably won't announce my decision until Signing Day." McClain visits Clemson (Jan. 11), Tennessee (Jan. 18), Auburn (Jan. 25) and finally LSU on Feb. 2.

Antoine McClain, the 6-foot-6, 313-pound, four-star offensive tackle from Anniston, Ala., continues to deny a leader but favors Clemson, Tennessee, Auburn and LSU and has official visits scheduled to each. All of his favorites have offered (27 total).
"I'm still pretty open," McClain said. "I haven't taken any official visits yet and I won't really have a favorite until I can take some trips. It's gonna go down to the end and I probably won't announce my decision until Signing Day."

McClain, ranked as the No. 8 offensive tackle in the country by Scout.com, takes his first official visit on Jan. 11 to Clemson. "I haven't been up there yet," McClain said. "I heard a lot of good things about the campus and that it's a lot like Auburn. They have pretty good tradition and it's supposed to be a fun college town."

Next McClain then heads to Tennessee on Jan. 18 and to local favorite Auburn on Jan. 25. "Auburn is a great environment for football," he said. "They have really good fans and I like the tradition and all the support they have. People love that team. It's a good college town too."

McClain's final official visit will be to LSU on Feb. 2. "I really like head coach Les Miles," he said. "He's a great guy and a good coach and has done an amazing job there. They are a top team every year and are playing for another national championship this year.

"I was worried when I heard that he might be going to Michigan, but after I found out that coach Miles was staying for sure, LSU was back in my top five."

McClain, who denies any parental preferences, says he never followed a specific school as a youngster. "I just love college football."

He credits himself with over 50 pancake blocks and 17 tackles during Anniston's 4-6 season
