I am wrapping up "Calhoun: American Heretic" by Larry Elder. Going into the book, I knew almost nothing about Calhoun other than the compact theory.

I highly recommend it for anyone with an interest in American, Southern, or Civil War history. It also speaks to some South Carolina history that I was not familiar with, including how political tensions between the upstate and lowcountry were resolved.

Bonus: Thomas Green Clemson is a significant secondary figure in the book and there are some interesting vignettes about the Fort Hill/Pendleton area.

On deck: "The Last Gentleman" by Walker Percy and "Master and Commander" for a beach trip next month.

What's everyone reading these days?

Excellent choice. I always thought the Apaches were badass. No sir, the Comanches were by far the superior Native American tribe.

Enjoy!

Easy reading, she's a great writer. She wrote The Dutch House which I really enjoyed.

Typing this out after reading posts from the history guys raises a question: Am I ghey?

Just re-read "All Creatures Great and Small" and "A River Runs Through It".

Calhoun sounds good, I'll look that one up.

Master and Commander is actually a 3 book series. A shame they only made the one movie.

To be followed by agendas for at least 20 more municipalities before 6pm today. I no longer read for personal pleasure since I deplore having to read 20k plus pages of government documents per week

I'm with ya there. Reading development ordinances for several different counties and a multitude of towns and municipalities scrambles the brain.

If you enjoy Master & Commander, I recommend you follow that with the Hornblower series

Right now I’m reading Braiding Sweetgrass but I doubt there are many in here who would be interested. It’s pretty hardcore treehugger/anticolonizer.

in my stance of refusing to browse the politically virused interwebs, I've just kept on readin...

I think since our last post i've read:
Empire of the Summer Moon - dope AF historical timeline of the Comanche Empire

The Given Day - Coughlin series by Dennis Lehane. 3rd of 3. it was meh. timeline is cool...early 1900s to 1940s prohibition mobster stuff

The Last Green Valley by Mark Sullivan - same guy who wrote Beneath the Scarlet Sky. FUGGIN WOW this book man. Historical fiction about an ethnic German family from Ukraine who ran from the Russians to get into Nazi Germany. Then obviously tried to run from the Russians again after they won. Everyone should read this book IMO. More powerful than Scarlet SKY IMO.

The Boy from Block 66 - first hand account of a kid who made it through the Holocaust. crazy crazy shid them folks went through.

no idea what's next. might get back into some westerns

Three Great Liberators Vanquished Tyranny" by Victor Davis Hanson. It's a really interesting comparison of 3 great "democratic" military marches in history: Epaminondas - the Theban General who freed the Helot slaves from Sparta that started the Spartan downfall, Sherman's march to the sea and up to Virginia during the Civil War, and Patton's march across Europe in WWII. It was an easy read and found it very enlightening - especially his section on Sherman.

Not sure what I'm going to read next - after reading Hanson's account of Patton's march across France and Germany - I'd like to read some more on Patton - particularly his youth and early military career.

Also have some books on the Korean War, the US Army in the WWII Pacific theater, and some brain candy military sci-fi on my list as well...

I've read Patton: Ordeal and Triumph, which was used for the movie. Another I've heard is good but have not read yet is Patton, Genius for War, by Carlo D'Este. that is supposed to be the most comprehensive of his life in and out of the military.

James C. Attaway, class of '31 was General Patton's Transportation Colonel. Landed 2 days after D-Day and ran supplies to the 3rd Army

Ended up as the Administrator of Lichtenstein after the Allies took control there. He loved Patton

Finishing The Wide Wide Sea by Hampton Sides this weekend. It’s excellent.

Looking forward to picking up Target: Beirut a NF book by Jack Carr a former Navy Seal who has written several good fiction books.

Carr will be at Buxton Books in CHS and at the Atlanta History Center this month discussing this new book.

Yep. I normally don’t read much fiction, but I’ve read all of Carr’s books. He’s also influenced me to buy some gear he used/uses.

There’s enough realism in his books to definitely keep one interested.
