Look at it from the US side.
Why do we pay tariffs to countries and not expect the same?

Both countries had tariffs in place to varying degrees.

A lot of Trump supporters are pointing to the huge tariffs Canada had in place on US goods that only went into effect at high volumes...volumes that were rarely hit.
There's every chance that, on balance, Canada taxed our goods more than we did theirs. But certainly not to the degree that Trump is insinuating and certainly not to the point that needed this absurd trade battle.

A dairy spat years in the making Canada imposes exorbitant tariffs on certain dairy products, including a tariff on milk that can be as high as 241%, much to the consternation of America’s dairy farmers, who have complained for years that the border nation is treating them unfairly. But it’s a sliding scale tariff that only kicks in after US dairy exports hit a certain quota — a level American exports haven’t reached because of measures Canada has put in place to protect its domestic dairy industry.
“U.S. dairy is grateful for the Trump Administration’s efforts to hold Canada accountable on these protectionist measures,” Becky Rasdall Vargas, senior vice president of trade and workforce policy at the International Dairy Foods Association, said in a statement. “At the same time, a prolonged tariff war with our top trading partners will continue to create uncertainly and additional costs for American dairy farmers, processors, and our rural communities. We urge Canada and the United States to negotiate a resolution to these issues – both Canada’s trade barriers to U.S. dairy exports and the tariffs – as expeditiously as possible.”
In 2023, a trade dispute panel ruled in favor of Canada, arguing that the high import taxes did not violate the USMCA. Wisconsin Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin lambasted the decision, arguing it was creating an undue burden on her state’s dairy industry.
“Wisconsin dairy farmers work hard every day to bring world class products to market, and they deserve a level playing field with their global competitors,” Baldwin said in the wake of the November 2023 decision. “This decision flies in the face of the agreement our country made with Canada and puts our Made in Wisconsin dairy products at a disadvantage.”

The US government spends tens of billions of dollars every year on subsidies for the meat and dairy industries. Canada doesn't directly subsidize their farmers. They instead have tariff-rate quotas and a supply management system. None of this was a problem in 2020 when Trump signed the USMCA and called it "the fairest, most balanced trade agreement ever".

I don't think this was any real well thought out endeavor.
If he truly had a long-term plan, he would have done everything to make this recession look like it was Biden's fault. But his emphasis on tariffs has made it apparent this recession is all his fault. He's going to get crushed in the midterms and kill his power.

...But I also don't want to let Congress off the hook. It's THEIR job to set Tariffs. I realize they allow the President to control it to some degree but it's become his playground and at some point there have to be adults in Congress who step in and take back control.
Trump has about a 18 months...at this rate, the midterms will be a complete blood bath. If the Democrats run on a platform that doesn't try to demonize Trump on immigration and isn't all about a parent's right to put their 8 year old on hormone blockers, it will not be pretty. And at that point, I hope they take full control of our tariff structure.

and tariffs is spot on. It was done with the assumption that a POTUS would only use that power to respond to urgent trade matters that couldn't wait on Congress to act...not as a policy initiative.

Is S T F U, let these clowns tear themselves apart while the head clown makes disastrous decisions, and then come out swinging with NOTHING but the economy as their platform in 2026.
But never, ever underestimate the stupidity of the Dems and their ability to #### this up.

right.
Anything the Dems do to mitigate Trump/Republican policies will only be used as THE reason that it didn't work out. Trump has zero allegiance to the truth and his followers will believe it completely.
Dems need to vocalize their opposition, vote accordingly, but avoid any tricks that undermine the policies until the midterms when they take over. Spend the time over the next 18 months going on the record of what your policy is and clean up your platform (get in line on immigration broadly...de-emphasize the farthest left policies on social justice). And then when Congress is in Dems hands in 2027, lead with maturity and decency. That's probably asking too much but that's probably the best to hope for.
This coming from a life-long Republican voter (though registered Independent).

And Canada just caved on the 25% electricity tariff. Guess those steel and aluminum tariffs did the trick. If Canada would just agree to eliminate all their tariffs on American goods we could all move forward. Wonder why they and the left wing trash in America insist that they have a right to screw us on tariffs?

Can you, in your own words, explain how we're getting screwed by Canada...

right now, but when Trump negotiated the current USMCA it was, and I quote, "Once approved by Congress, this new deal will be the most modern, up-to-date, and balanced trade agreement in the history of our country, with the most advanced protections for workers ever developed."
https://trumpwhitehouse.archives.gov/briefings-statements/remarks-president-trump-united-states-mexico-canada-agreement/
Now, to the best of my knowledge, no new tariffs were placed on the US by Canada since that signing prior to Trump taking office again in Jan '25.
So...how are we getting screwed now, but 7 years ago it was the most balanced agreement in our history?

The ironic part is that the USMCA, for all Donald's bluster, actually was a really good trade deal and one of the better things he delivered. Which is why it's baffling Trump 47 is setting fire to it. Trump 45 would not have approved.
