The Draft

Oct 25, 2016, 2:54 PM

It seems a great deal of the country's social turmoils came at the end of or after the end of compulsory military service. Correlation, likely. Causation? What do you think?

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Full disclosure:

Oct 25, 2016, 2:55 PM

I shudder to think where I'd be without my decision to enter military service. I was on a very dangerous path.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not sure I get your post...

Oct 25, 2016, 3:02 PM

Are you suggesting we bring back compulsory military service?

Not at all.

Oct 25, 2016, 3:03 PM

There are many young men and women who would hinder our military effectiveness. I wouldn't want them.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But are you saying that there could be a correlation...

Oct 25, 2016, 3:06 PM

Between the end of the draft and societal ills? That wouldn't seem to make much sense given that only a specific percentage of the population was targeted for compulsory service during the last two times it was used. And for only a few years as well.

Re: The Draft

Oct 25, 2016, 3:00 PM

Name it. We certainly live in a society where simple rules of decency are seemingly gone. Go sit in a McDs with a bunch of teenagers if you don't believe me.

I'm not looking to discuss the abortion and gay marriage; I'm talking about simple interactions, discussions, etc.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How does military service fix that?

Oct 25, 2016, 3:04 PM

There seem to be a lot of problems stemming from military cover ups of crime in the name of "honor" (namely sexual assault). I don't think an authoritarian society solves the problem. The military also doesn't want the draft; they want soldiers who want to serve.

And simple decency was more prevalent in society as recently as the 1970s and 1980s.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What's good for you may not be so much for others.

Oct 25, 2016, 3:07 PM

Our government and military higher ups have repeatedly failed our veterans as well (particularly those Vietnam ones who were drafted), so I'm not sure it's a good thing.

Noted.

Oct 25, 2016, 3:09 PM

And I agree with the VA issues, but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about simple respect, decorum, fairness, integrity, and responsibility. These are values taught at every level of every branch of the military.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How are we measuring "simple decency"? I brought up

Oct 25, 2016, 3:07 PM [ in reply to It put me on the right path... ]

segregation merely to point out that we're assuming decency existed during the times of the draft and during segregation.

I guess it depends who you're asking, as to how decent those times were.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Simple stuff...

Oct 25, 2016, 3:10 PM

Watching your language in public, modulating your speaking level when in a social situation, saying please and thank you, treating service professionals respectfully, etc.

Riiiiiiight.

Oct 25, 2016, 3:21 PM [ in reply to Sure it does, but not as prevalently as in the past. ]

I mean you could bring up the supposed Socrates quote that, while likely not ancient, has been going around since the 1950's.

"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers."

It's been the opinion of folks that decency in society has been on the decline for decades now at least, with every generation pointing to the one they grew up in as somehow better or kinder than the new one.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Riiiiiiight.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but I don't remember saying "f&%k" in a crowded fast-food restaurant.

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oct 25, 2016, 3:30 PM [ in reply to Re: Riiiiiiight. ]

They called black people who came into a crowded restaurant some choice words. Don't hear of that happening too often now.

I think the definition of decency just changes.

Why did the person yell ####? I mean, if you're in McDonald's or something and they keep screwing up your order, maybe it's justified?

And I've been ignoring gotigers37's inputs to this discussion.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ok, Robert. Riddle me this:

Oct 25, 2016, 3:41 PM

What would justify loudly saying "f&%k" in a crowded fast food restaurant?

Also, ignoring gotiger's input belies the "all" in your statement.

I think you're wrong. There may be a correlation, but causation requires research. Same with the draft, yes, but it's interesting discussion fodder.

Additionally, your hypothesis is better suited for another thread.

Military service did a lot of good for a lot of young men.

Oct 25, 2016, 4:20 PM

There are many young boys today that have never had any type of discipline in their lives. Have never been a part of something important. Have never experienced the comradeship of other young men their age. And the effects are lasting and inter-generational. A fellow worker's dad was a retired Marine before he died. He has told me many times the positive impact on his life that his dad had, and he knew it was a military type mental discipline that was at the core of it. He developed his own mental discipline from his dad. And how many millions of young men are there today who grew up without the role model of a father? Who do not even know what it means to be a man.

While I understand why he wouldn't want me to join, my father was wrong about some things, too. I've seen far too many benefits come from service for people who are my age.
