In Honor of the Fourth of July I watched this American Classic again today. That beat down never gets old.

Great post. 45-0 in Willy Brison in 1989 was really the best in my gen, but that's splitting hairs. That was a good one!

The 45-0 beatdown was expected

that year.
63-17 came, literally, out of the blue. I believe Scar was favored in the game....if not it was basically a pick em.
45-0 was fun...but 63-17 is in a class by itself IMO

You're right in that our 1989 team was a very, very strong team all year that finished 12th in the country. They beat FSU away, and capped the season with a bowl win over WVU and Harris. If you'll further recall our 2003 team was probably Bowden's best team in regards to how they were playing at the end of the year. We followed that beat down of SCAR with a beat down of TN in the Peach Bowl. Nobody would have wanted to play us the last five games of that season.

You're wrong in that SCAR's 2003 squad was not favored, and not even a toss up prediction against us in that game. SCAR's 1989 team, which went 6-4-1 and had a chance for 7 wins, was definitely better than the 2003 team that finished 5-7.

If I recall correctly is was a huge deal that they put the 1989 game in prime time on ESPN. That beat down was every bit as demoralizing to Gamecock Nation as the 2003 one. Only difference IMO, is that Holtz was at SCAR in 2003 which made it very sweet.
I'll take them both. I usually mention them in the same conversation if a coot tries to ever talk about beating us down in any particular game. Those were true beat downs. I can't really ever remember a "beat down" from SCAR in my lifetime. (1976-*)

I still have the images burned into my memory of the coot fans with their "hang-dog" faces crying into their stale beer during the 2nd half of that game. Never have I seen such gloom and despair on grown men's faces. CLASSIC.

the differnce in the two is

in the 89 game sakerlina didn't start a single player that could start for clemson...it was so obvious the talent level had dropped for SC since 2 years prior. In 2003 clemson was just inspired to play for Bowden...they knew they had to win for him to stay around....Clemson execured their offensive game plan to perfection...and the just kept the momentum for 60 min

Robert Brooks would have probably started for us, but that's about all I can see from first glance. Both games were awesome. Period!

interesting how many tigers from that roster wnet on to the NFL, or successful coaching careers, two of whom are on our current staff. Also interesting to note how many gamecocks from that roster went to prison.

Definitely in my Top 10 Clemson wins along with Nebraska OB, PennState CB, Oklahoma CB and RAB, ACC Championship vs VaTech, OSU GB and OB, UGA in 2013, Lou Holtz's last game in DV, and any other win vs SC. Go Tigers!
