The difference then and now... my issue with losing to SCar.

Dec 3, 2013, 7:12 PM

I read an article the other day that really got my wheels turning when it comes to the Clemson/SCar game. It made me think of what losing to SCar means now versus when we weren't so good... and it's this; it's keeping us from having GREAT seasons versus just good ones. We've had some bad coaches and teams come through here and we still rolled SCar. But did it matter? Yes.. but really only for that one game. Now, it means everything... not just because it's a "rivalry" but because bigger things are at stake. And we've asked for it. We "want" to be top tier team. Beating SCar isn't just about beating SCar anymore. It's about not screwing up great seasons, and what's beyond SCar.

Come next year, it will be about getting into the Top 4. What happens when we keep going into the SCar game with 1 loss or being undefeated, but can't beat them? What will fans think then? Will they still be ok with that? I won't.

You have to give credit to where credit is due... but I also believe that criticism should be given where it's due. We all said that Tommy Bowden couldn't take us to the next level... he didn't. Dabo actually did. But does Dabo, after all the help he has surrounding him, take us to the NEXT level? Florida St is no joke. And it ain't all about Jameis. So in the next several years, we are going to have to BEAT Florida St AND SCar to make a truly special season happen. Will we? Dabo's record versus those 2 schools say otherwise: 3-9.

We cannot keep losing to SCar. It's not just about the rivalry anymore. It's about the next level.... and I think that's gonna take more than just "an oil change".

I've always said we should aim higher than just beating them. Yeah they're better but what you say is true. It is about not messing up a good season

The difference between Dabo being 1-5 vs SCar

Dec 3, 2013, 7:40 PM

and 3-3 vs SCar is 18 turnovers over a five year span. Eliminate the turnovers, and Clemson wins thee out of the last five games.

yeah it's that simple.***

In life SH.. happens. Well, in football, TO's happen! They have to be coached around and simply we do not have the OC and DC capable of doing that. If anyone things that Morris and Venables will lead us to the glory land, I'm here to tell you it will not happen because they are both too rigid and not flexible enough to coach according to the game they are in versus what "coaching style" they have.

This is why I sometimes wish we could move the Clemson-SC game to the first game of the season for once. That way, a loss can be rectified with a string of 11 straight wins - assuming we can beat FSU. But, just saying - hypothetically.

we should bring back Big Thursday in October again.***

I think in five years Dabo has done about as well as I could have asked. Consider the record and ranking. I remember watching the polls come out on Sunday while expecting being mentioned in 'other teams with votes,' and wishing for a top 25 ranking. Now I expect a top ten and wish for a top five. Sometimes during the last two seasons I've wonder, without even wishing, if we aren't the best team in the country.

Things are getting better for Clemson Football but my dread is that we are nearing an asymptote. I think our playcalling on offense and defense can improve but I doubt our recruiting will get much better.

I wonder how much better we can get, if any, and how much luck it will take to put us in the playoffs next year.

IMO Dabo is fully capable to taking us to the next level however his OC and DC cannot and will not. They are both mediocre at best and fail to understand some simple facts. You coach against the team you are playing using strategies, tactics, etc that will work against them. You DO NOT be bull headed and use YOUR Approach as it may be wrong against a given team.
The game against the coots this year clearly shows that these 2 guys are great when the talent is tilted in our favor but when it is even or we're on the short end, they are clueless!

I agee that our playcalling can improve. I think games should be started running what you do best. If that fails then it's time to take what the other team gives you.

All that is preceeded by game planning for the team you face. I think our guys do that for the most part but it's clear our OC is lacking experience against D1 coaching staffs. That can be fixed, he will learn and grow at the expense of our win/loss ratio.

I guess that's the main reason I'm not worried about him leaving to become a HC somewhere else. Good and bad coexist here. He can't lose experience, he can only get better.

I disagree with your assesment of BV. He's done wonders for Clemson's defense though most of the pieces were in place before he came.

I think Dabo has great input on the playcalling too. I'm not one of those guys who thinks Dabo is just a cheerleader and I've never bought into the concept that he knows nothing of the X's and O's of football. It seems unlikely that a football ignorant moron could have assembled this staff and players.

Had the 4 game playoff started this year, we probably

would have punched our ticket to go if we won.

True...especially after the conference championships are played.

The rivalry game is getting big on both sides.

Dec 4, 2013, 2:37 PM

Clemson is looking to punch that ticket to the next level, and in a sense, so is SC. Trying to get that boost to the top tier with a win. If SC ever gets it together in conference and stops dropping games to teams like TENNESSEE, then it will be an even bigger matchup.

Think about this scenario. Both teams in the top 5, already punched the ticket to Charlotte and Atlanta respectively to play another top 10-15 opponent with a chance to maybe go one for a national title hanging in the balance. This game isn't far from that point right now. Could you imagine how hot our rivalry would be if it started meaning something like that?

if we don't choke against usuc.

But most of you people are complete idiots in your prescriptions for improvement.

We don't need wholesale changes, or any of that. Just some players that don't choke against them. And Sat night was a choke, for sure.

Besides, Spurrier won't stay around forever.
