If TCU and USC lose… the argument isn’t between Clemson and UT…

it’s between Clemson and a 1 loss Michigan
Assuming UGA and OSU win out, and USC and TCU drop a game…. I think it looks like this:
1. UGA 2. OSU 3. UT 4. Clemson/ Michigan
However… a 1- loss TCU conference champ, 1- loss Clemson conference champ, 1 loss UM, snd 1- loss UT fighting for 2 spots would be interesting

It might also depend on how competitive MI is in a loss to OSU. If they get beat by more than a couple of TDs, they may drop out of contention. And vice versa... I actually think OSU might fair better with one loss than MI simply because I think OSU is thought of higher by the committee.

Thats why our ND loss will be tough to overcome. If we had gone up there and lost 35-31 we would be in a much better position than we are. Quality of loss does matter.

An ACC Championship Clemson should be in over a 1-loss Michigan in that scenario. Their only ranked win would be Penn St. We would have potentially NCST, FSU and UNC as ranked wins WITH a Conf Championship.

@lightbulbbill I agree unfortunately. Massive beat down on national tv right after the talking heads were wondering how the heck we were in the top 4 to begin with.
Clemson would struggle with Michigan imo just because I feel they are very similar to ND in running the ball. ND put up 250 and they are not thought of as being as good as Michigan. OSU and Ga both have good running game’s as well. We currently do not have that Grady Jarrett style run stopper and that would hurt us against bigger OL’s. We had not faced an OL this year that was remotely close to what ND had and it showed unfortunately.
Only way to fix those issues is to recruit as good or better than what is in the top 5 currently. We have dropped a little as far as recruiting when compared to 3-5 years ago.
If we get in I would be ecstatic but as I said in another post I have made peace that this is not the year. Honestly I’m just glad we get to play for another conference championship. Watching Pitt and Wake Forest play made me sick.

The Committee's website states that Conference Championships

is one of the major factors in their rankings, and they've proven that is true over time. I think we would clearly be in over the OSU/Michigan loser, and we may even make it in over Tennessee even though I think Tennessee is quite clearly the better team.
Keep in mind that no one actually knows how good the different conferences are...the entire Big 10's complete list of Power 5 wins this year is (they're 5-6 overall):
Illinois over Duke Penn State over Auburn Minnesota over Colorado Rutgers over Boston College Ohio State over Notre Dame
In this day and age, the conferences rarely play good OOC matchups. It would honestly be incredibly irresponsible to take non-conference champions if they don't have truly elite non-conference wins, and I think the Committee realizes that.

Good analysis.
TCU clearly can lose (Baylor and/or BIG12 title game) North Carolina (Clemson) Southern California (UCLA, Notre Dame or possible PAC12 title game)
That leaves five playoff worthy (record) teams … and Clemson stacks up better against Michigan than the Buckeyes.
An 11-1 Ohio State team would have the win over Notre Dame that would probably cause the committee to award the fourth playoff spot to them. So … and I hate doing this … go Buckeyes, annihilate Michigan!

The big assumption is we win the ACC because if we do and TCU and USC both lose, we will be in.

The combo for Clemson to make it is -
TCU needs to lose the conf. championship game USC needs to get blown out by ND UGA Win out Clemson blow out a top 10 UNC team OSU blow out Michigan (Not necessary but helps)
IF all of these things happen Clemson is guaranteed a spot in the playoffs against UGA in the peach or OSU in the fiesta. It would be UGA, OSU, Tenn, and Clemson.
Things that will keep Clemson out of the playoffs - Michigan beating OSU or TCU winning out (or 1 loss TCU conf champ).
I think Tenn is all but guaranteed a playoff spot at this point just like the 1 loss non-conf champ Alabama a few years ago.

So you are saying 2 from the SEC East? That would definitely be interesting. That side has been the worst of the 2 division for the last 5-7 years and now they could possibly get 2 in the playoff. I honestly do not have a clue how they come up with the final 4 so this could definitely be a possibility.
