The case against the "We don't care about basketball" argument

Hey guys, I've been thinking about this for a while so I wanted to compile the data. This is not addressing the current state of the program with CBB but is geared toward the argument I constantly see on TNet that basketball has always played 3rd fiddle to football and baseball. I wanted to see the success of other "Football Schools" on the basketball court.

In the first picture, I've compiled a list of the top 20 winningest CFB teams of all time and broken out their NCAA Tournament Appearances and Final Four Appearances. What jumped out to me was that of the remaining 19 teams outside of Clemson, 79% have more NCAAT Appearances and 74% have more Final Fours.

To be a little more fair given our location and the traditional sports played in the South, I then broke out just SEC teams, as well as who I consider to be the "Football Schools" in the ACC. The data still doesn't look great as we are outpaces by schools like UGA, Auburn, and MSU when it comes to final four appearance and by over 60% of the SEC in tournament berths.

All this being said, I hope we can change the thought process that just because we are a football (and baseball) first school, it means we have to be relegated to NO expectations when it comes to basketball.

Good info but I am confused about the last sentence. Why would you state we have no expectations? Neff was clear last year that CBBs march madness drought was unacceptable, and he needed to have us in the tournament this year or else.

This notion that Clemson fans don’t care about basketball is nonsense. I remember Little John being packed for home games even during the Cliff Ellis day. The problem is, if the administration does not show interest in the program and the product on the court sucks, people lose interest. That’s what’s happening with basketball right now. Long time fans like myself are losing interest because ClownL is standing there on the sidelines year after year accomplishing very little.

You hit it on the head. Sometimes you just need to make a change. The vast majority of Iptay supporters that I speak with don’t even watch BB anymore due to a complete loss of confidence in Brownell. He can’t recruit and he can’t coach. What’s left is he is a class guy.

I think you misunderstand. There are plenty of fans who care about basketball. It’s the admin who doesn’t seem to care.

Maybe the problem is we don’t have enough high dollar donors who care about basketball like we do in football. People who can actually influence change…
