BCS rankings, next three games, and thoughts....

Oct 15, 2012, 10:36 AM

Here is a look at the current BCS standings, with each team's next three games beside them. My thoughts are below the rankings and schedule.

1 Alabama 6-0 (@UT, vs. Miss. St., @LSU)
2 Florida 6-0 (vs. SCU, vs. UGA, vs. Mizzou)
3 Oregon 6-0 (@Arizona St., vs. Colorado, @USC)
4 Kansas State 6-0 (@WVU, vs. TT, vs. OKST)
5 Notre Dame 6-0 (vs. BYU, @OU, vs. Pitt)
6 LSU 6-1 (@TAMU, idle, vs. BAMA)
7 South Carolina 6-1 (@UF, vs. UT, idle)
8 Oregon State 5-0 (vs. Utah, @ Washington, vs. AZ ST.)
9 Oklahoma 4-1 (vs. Kansas, vs. ND, @ISU)
10 USC 5-1 (vs. Colorado, @AZ, vs. Oregon)
11 Georgia 5-1 (@UK, vs. UF, vs. Ole Miss)
12 Mississippi State 6-0 (vs. MTSU, @BAMA, vs. TAMU)
13 West Virginia 5-1 (vs. KState, idle, vs. TCU)
14 Florida State 6-1 (@UM, vs. Duke, idle)
15 Rutgers 6-0 (@Temple, vs. Kent St., idle)
16 Louisville 6-0 (vs. USF, vs. Cincy, vs. Temple)
17 Texas Tech 5-1 (@TCU, @KState, vs. Texas)
18 Texas A&M 5-1 (vs. LSU, @AU, @Miss. St.)
19 Clemson 5-1 (vs. VT, @WF, @Duke)

1. Clemson must continue to win, and my different scenarios all assume we will.

2. I think we eventually jump Big East teams (unless they remain undefeated, which is unlikely).

3. Teams 12 - 18 could all lose at least one the next three weeks. TAMU and MISS. ST play each other. FSU plays @ VT in four weeks.

4. I think that if either USC, UGA, or OU lose another game, they will fall below a one loss Clemson, when it's all said and done. If we were to win out, they wouldn't be an issue. (if they had two losses)

5. I think this year's BCS is going to be a mess... even moreso than last year.

6. I think there is potential for us to eventually move pretty high, assuming we win out with a win over SCU. I think there is going to be A LOT of shuffling, and teams getting knocked off the rest of the way.

Thoughts?

Florida looks to have the easy way to the top over the next 3 weeks, should Bama loose to LSU.

Florida could jump Bama after they destroy USuC. Florida has a better Defense than LSU and they have a QB that can actually play football. Florida by 21 points. Go Tigers. Go gators.

I'm just not worried about the BCS. I hope Clemson wins

Oct 15, 2012, 10:42 AM

out because I want to see Clemson win. I'm passed the point of validating this incredibly stupid format for determining a champion. As most anticipated, the BCS is a nightmare and a detriment to college football. If I have to sit through another four hours of NOT watching an SEC match-up for the national championship, I'm not sure how much longer I can be a college football fan (though always a Clemson fan). It's just too ridiculous.

Tons of opportunities for everyone ahead of us to lose. We CAN win out, and if we do, I give this coaching staff all the credit in the world. If we do, we'll be somewhere in the top 10. I imagine that alone would solidify our top-notch recruiting class and keep some upper classman in school in anticipation of a great year next year.

I think that for us and FSU to have such low rankings in the computer polls, assuming we continue to win and don't drop in human polls, we have a better chance of moving up quickly than the other teams around us.

Also the Big East teams have to play each other at some point and really none of them have done anything impressive yet. I wouldn't be surprised to see each drop a couple in conference play.

The Big XII teams also have to play each other which will also help us move up.

We have nothing to worry about. Just need to keep winning.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hard to see Clemson or FSU moving up much in computer polls

Oct 15, 2012, 10:48 AM

They simply don't have the quality opponents on the schedule to do it. An undefeated ACC team may have gotten in the BCS championship, but a one-loss? I don't see it happening.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The thing is we don't have to move up much

Oct 15, 2012, 10:50 AM

We currently are the two lowest ranked teams in the computer polls, but 14 and 19 in the rankings. Any movement in the computer polls will give us a boost. Meaning any time any top 25 team loses we will likely see an increase in our computer poll standing.

Florida, UGA, and SCU will all move. My Personal preference would be for UF to win both games. We'd jump UGA for sure, maybe S.Car depending on what else happens in positions 10-18.

Miss St. will drop with a loss to Bama, then either they or TAMU will drop below us when they play each other. TAMU could drop before that against LSU.

FSU beating Miami and Duke would help us look better, but of course, we want them to lose once.

I really don't like the polls because it seems like either everyone loses once, then they just use bias to determine which 1 loss team looked the best, or the good teams keep winning, thus making it easier to get into the top 15, maybe even 9 or 10, but very unlikely to get past that because in mid November, it's hard to find an undefeated team to get that boost.

Unless you're in the SEC, of course, who have positioned themselves to always be playing ranked teams, whether or not those ranks are deserved at the time.

The BCS is meaningless.....

Oct 15, 2012, 10:53 AM

Unless your undefeated. There is a lot of football to be played still, but the BCS will still be mess come the end of the season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nicely thought out...

Oct 15, 2012, 10:59 AM

And generally, I agree. It's a given that we must continue to win, but our movement up will be more predicated on other people losing.

Any losses by Big East teams will be crippling to their hopes, while it appears that (with the notable exception of Miss State) the SEC can continue to merry-go-round to the BCS title game if Oregon stumbles.

Clemson wins out they get a BCS at large berth because the

Oct 15, 2012, 11:10 AM

Big10 will only send one school to the BCS this year. The SEC, Big12, Pac12, and ACC will send two schools each if Clemson wins out. The Big East will send one and Notre Dame will go. There aren't any non BCS school that will get bids this year. The BCS needs ten teams and if Clemson wins the rest of there games they will be one of the ten.

Re: BCS rankings, next three games, and thoughts....

Oct 15, 2012, 11:15 AM

1) The BCS as it pertains to a national title shot and Clemson is meaningless as we are not that good this year. However, if we avoid upsets the next 5 weeks. The USC game would be for a BCS game.

2) If we do beat USC we'd and finish 11-1, by then we'd jump a lot of those teams and be in the top ten which would allow a BCS bowl to pick us.

3) If things go for us as predicted and they (rarely do) we'd be 10-2, not in a BCS bowl anyway and get the Peach Bowl which is a good bowl (by ACC standards) and a good game for a young team which should be better next year. A lot better if Chad, Tajh, and DeAndre are all back.

4) At 10-2 we wouldn't get snubbed by the coastal champion or NCST. If we are 7-1 in conf. and don't go to the ACC-CG, then by definition NCST has a min. of 3 loses and VT would have 5. Miami would have four and VT/Miami loser another one.

Oregon loses to USC, K-State loses to WVU, ND loses to Oklahoma and LSU loses to Bama. A whole lot of shuffling around comin.

Alabama plays LSU in BR and Bama lost to LSU at home last year. I'm thinking LSU wins at home and the BCS becomes even more of a mess. UF may be the SEC's only hope for an undefeated team and I'm not completely sold on that offense going undefeated.
