Whether someone other than A-Walz served in the mikitary is utterly irrelevant. This is about A-Walz knowing that
(1). His NG unit was likely to be deployed to Iraq BEFORE he filed his retirement papers,
(2) Despite foreknowledge that deployment to Iraq was highly likely, he nevertheless confirmed to his superiors and selected subordinates that he was still going to run for Congress either from Iraq or in MN,
(3). Just before his unit was to be deployed to Iraq, A-Walz bypassed the NG’s ‘stop loss’ policy (which prevents a soldier from leaving the NG after it’s unit has been selected for deployment) by breaking protocol (bypassing his superior commander) and informing a different high level commander of his decision to retire; the ‘different’ high level commander didn’t object to A-Walz’s retirement decision.
(4). After retiring (and leaving his NG unit hanging), A-Walz proceeded to use cleverly deceptive language while continuing his bid for US Congressman to create the impression that he had served in the war zones. A-Walz never got close to either the Afghanistan or Iraq war ones. Nor did he get close to any hot spot. He was careful, however, to not dispel any impressions of his warzone bravery that his autobiographical clips might have created in his constituents.
(5). He also contorted the language about the high rank (as regards to non-officers) that he had achieved; A-Walz never completed the coursework that would have earned him the exalted rank. He had been provisionally & proactively granted the exalted tank (and the pay that went along with it) under the premise that he would complete his coursework. A-Walz never completed the coursework, therefore his exalted rank was retroactively revoked. A-Walz successfully created the illusion that he had indeed retired as having earned the exalted rank by the time of his retirement.
There’s other stuff not directly related to his retirement where A-Walz further embellished his ‘heroic’ service.

So, when a chicken hawk like me, who never attempted to deceive the public so that I could get power over them and be paid by them, dares to criticize a retired national guardsman, then that’s bad.
So when a National Guardsman, who never had a live round fired at him with the objective of the shooter being to kill him, runs for the hills the first time that he is faced with the prospect of facing danger, who consciously decided to not honor his oath to ‘serve and protect,’ then lies repeatedly about his service in war zones -and- repeatedly lies about the high status rank that he had earned, THAT is the lefty’s definition of a worthy leader.
Hypothetical whataboutisms are especially pathetic attempts to defend the phony leaders that leftists always love.

I would not have lied about my history and actions / inactions that I had taken.
A-Walz lied innumerable times about fake accomplishments.
Serving in the military does not absolve the service member for his lies. That is, unless he’s a leftist after leaving the service, in which he is deemed to be a leader if the highest caliber.

Keep it up with the pathetic excuses.
A-Walz had no ‘right’ to lie about his service I.e., to embellish it.
It was his choice to gamble the honorable part of his service by lying about sacrifices that he didn’t make + lying about the rank that he had achieved; he consciously and willingly risked the good part of his service history in exchange for improving his prospects for a political career.
Congratulations to A-Walz. He achieved his political objectives in exchange for dishonoring himself by lying about his accomplishments.
There are many people who would sign up for the military, get training while being paid, accumulating retirement benefits, if they KNEW that they would never be called up to be deployed in a war zone.
A-Walz was worse. He got all of the goodies from being in the service and KNEW that he might get called up to a war zone. Chickening out and maneuvering so that he could avoid serving when the moment of truth arrived will forever brand him as a coward. Had he kept his mouth shut and kept his profile low, then his disservice would have been only known by his family and those men & women in his unit. Instead, he made up a bunch of ‘I’m a hero’ whoppers and, thanks significantly to the propagandist Minneapolis Star Tribune, got away with it (I.e., the public didn’t know the truth because MST refused to print it).
Finally, justice has been served as far as (cliche coming) the court of public opinion. He got caught for lying, and you can’t handle the truth.
(This is your cue to get mad again and dole out some more TD’s.)

Retiring when he did is not a big deal.
Saying that he carried weapons in war, when he never fought in a war, is much more significant.

Deflection is his tactic; it’s a must when unable to produce a sensible counter argument.
Propagandizing is the strategy. He’s got a personal / career oriented agenda that makes him a metaphorical slave to the Establishment wing of the Democrat party. Because his personal / career agenda does not elicit widespread sympathy from those outside of his type of career, he’s got to conjure up other positions in hopes of convincing more potential voters to embrace his politics and to encourage other ‘slaves’ to the Democrat party’s financial largess to their numerous special interest group factions to remain in Team Establishment Democrat.
It’s easy to identify propagandists over time. Passionately espoused positions that ‘circumstantially’ mirror those of Team Establishment Democrat suddenly wither away when Team Democrat’s previously ‘circumstantially identical’ positions change.

You’re right, there are much worse things about Walz than him being a proven liar about his military service. Such as, gender affirming care and surgeries for minors, botching the response to the Minneapolis riots(he also justified them), increasing Minnesotas income tax to 10%, supporting late term abortion. On top of all that the only fields that have increased employment during his governorship is social work and health workers. Many of which are state funded employees. He’s also openly said that socialism =neighborliness.
