Curtis Strange last week

Jun 22, 2022, 9:58 AM

I know there are a lot of golf fans on here and a lot of discussion about LIV versus PGA. Well, I’ve always liked Curtis Strange and the way he has always been honest and direct and called it like he saw it, but I thought he made a really dumb statement last week. It just goes to show no matter where you come from money changes people and after you’ve had money for a certain period of time you forget what it’s like to be one of the little people. It was disappointing to see that he now seems to be out of touch.

On sports radio here in Charleston last week they were discussing Strange and his comments criticizing a young player whose name I don’t remember and frankly have never heard and they were shocked that this guy was invited to play on the LIV tour because he is young and new to the PGA tour so not the type of household name you would expect the LIV Tour to want.

Well apparently Curtis Strange got his panties in a wad about the LIV tour and decided to take a shot at this kid. Strange sad that this kid was making a huge mistake and that he would be better on the PGA tour because the $25 million the kid was getting was not life-changing money!

I guess Curtis has forgotten that there are no promises given today’s competition on the PGA tour and certainly there are no guarantees for a young player especially when an injury or anything could happen and you spent years busting your ### trying to make it back to the PGA.

I certainly don’t know about you guys, but a guaranteed $25 million for a young player to spend a little time on the LIV tour sounds like a no-brainer.

I wonder if Curtis would’ve thought a guaranteed $25 million was life-changing money when he first got started. I’m pretty sure we all know the answer to that, which is why it’s disappointing that he now seems to be so out of touch.

Jealousy, i don't think Strange ever made 25 million playing golf.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That was my thinking as well

Because he did well on the tour, especially for the era that he played, but I figured he didn’t make anywhere near $25 million. I’m sure he’s made that over the years in marketing, golf course design, and TV money, but not in career winnings as a PGA player.

I decided to look up his career earnings. He led the PGA tour in earnings three years, 19 total wins, two majors, for a career earnings total of just under $8 million. So this kid just for showing up is going to make more than three times as much as Curtis made in his entire career on the PGA tour. So yeah no jealousy there!

I get it if he wants to criticize guys that have won big money and have big names going to Saudi Arabia, but to attack a young guy just getting his career started seemed pretty petty. Because $25 million is life-changing money for anyone that’s not already a millionaire even with Joe Biden‘s crazy inflation!

It should not seem strange to anyone who follows the PGA, but Curtis hasn't been relevant since 1988.The only reason he was relevant last week was because he won the 1988 U.S. Open at Brookline.

Googled - but couldn't find the quote. Assuming he said that

Jun 22, 2022, 10:42 AM

- yes, extremely out of touch.

A funny aside - as I was Googling, I found an article from 1985 where Curtis Strange was about to break the single season PGA earnings record of $527,000. Times have changed a bit...

I don’t think it was in an article.

They were talking about it on sports radio and I think maybe it was a comment he made either on the golf channel or during the U.S. Open. I didn’t watch any of it last week, but I’m pretty sure he was one of the announcers.

Speaking of money and the PGA

If you really wanna see something crazy go look at what the player ranked number 125 on the money list earned the year before Tiger Woods joined the PGA tour. Keep in mind The top 125 players on the money list each year earn their full card for the next season.

Then go and look at how much number 125 on the made over the next few years. It’s crazy how the money exponentially exploded on the PGA tour when Tiger Woods started playing. No one has ever had an impact like he has.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

If done right - $25mil is life changing money for 3 or 4

Curtis is worth about 8 million. Think the young golfer is doing just fine with his 25.

Curtis has a twin brother I met a few years back in Richmond, VA. Before I knew that fact and as I was telling him he looked like Curtis Strange he answered by saying "yeah, but I'm the nice one"...
