IMO, I believe we would be better served with one if not the best college DC'S in the country to come in and coach our players and give any help that he could give to our defensive position coaches. I understand that's just my personal opinion, but that's what I believe should happen over the next few weeks, especially before spring practice. But Dabo would have to pay one of the best DC's in country right out the box, but it would be the very best Christmas present he could give to his defensive players, and our fan base!!!

I don't know if Zimmer is the answer, but I've said from day 1 that theory from analysis is no comparison to the reality of being on the field. Our linebackers have looked woeful since Venables left, as has the overall defense. My son plays nickel/linebacker at a smaller school, but we evaluated every option based on the position coach; what is his experience to coach my son to grow and reach the next level of performance? If there is no practical experience there, the student is probably more proficient than the coach. Look at it this way; would you trust a fighter pilot in a drone pilot's seat? Absolutely, but would you trust a drone pilot in a fighter pilot's seat? I absolutely would not because the drone pilot has no feel for all of the variables that come into play on the battle field. Updrafts, downdrafts, position of the sun, the human spatial and directional accuracy needed to make split second decisions that mean life and death. Football is not life and death, but split seconds are the difference in stopping 4th and 1, or giving up 77-yard TD runs, 3 PI penalties and filling gaps. The defense has been sketchy and inconsistent the last two seasons, and I'm really not surprised that our recruiting isn't up to the power rangers level since Venables left, but this is where we are and we need to get back to being able to close on several TJ Parker's and Sammy Brown's rather than mostly having to take fall backs later in the recruiting window.

College level coordinators need years of experience from the HS ranks and the college ranks before they usually become good enough to become a power 5 D1 Coordinator. Wes become a power 5 D1 college coordinator without a day of on the field experience at any college or HS. He didn't even play HS or college FB anywhere known to Dabo. He was a Brainiac numbers guy that loved watching and analyzing the game of FB!!!
I found no real college coaching experience by Wes Goodwin here, and the Wikipedia will usually list whatever they find, and that task seemed to be pretty easy for Wikipedia with Wes Goodwin!!!

Love Zimmer, but these NFL guys rarely come back to college! They see it as a step down. What did Steelers coach Tomlin say recently when someone asked him about a college job?? "Why the #### would I go coach college" ???? I'm paraphrasing but he was insulted at the thought of it!

They usually make horrible college coaches, and they don't have a clue of how to handle or deal with college athletes that 18, 19, 20 years old!!!

when the Steelers were struggling to one of the 8-8 record seasons. Tomlin is a pro coach through and through, but he was also very specific in that interview that he absolutely would not step down from the Steelers, let alone step down to coach in college. The Steelers are one of the greatest organizations in all of sports, and I wouldn't leave that organization as HC until I was told to leave.

However I don’t think not having played is as much of a detriment as not having called plays live for long enough to handle the pressure. Some of the best players in the world can’t communicate well enough to use their experiences to their advantage.
I do agree that great analysts don’t necessarily make great play callers. That’s a skill in and of itself.
