Before he arrived in 2011 he was on tape talking about his goals: Win the ACC, All-American, etc. He was confident and that video was seen a lot. Then, he showed up and did it.
Last year, going into his Sophomore year, he was humble, got some life lessons and played like he was on mute. That attitude did not work for Sammy Watkins. I have no doubt the coaches were preaching humility to him to try to contain and ground him a bit. Bad idea. Sammy is confident and he needs to show it.
So, with his comments lately (Fear me! and I am The Best!) I can't help but think that somebody has figured out that the best way to make him perform is for him to set very high expectations for himself. That's the best way to pressure him to do well. He doesn't respond from pressure from others' expectations. He only responds to the expectations he sets on himself. He is his own motivator. Some people are that way. They can't perform at their best unless they are exceeding their own expectations.
I expect great things from Sammy Watkins this year. Because with him, it's not physical, it's psychological.

I also think there's a fine line between confident and cocky. As a confident player, he could stand out on and off the field as one of, if not the greatest receiver in the NCAA and a person who people love.
With cocky attitudes, you get players like Terrell Owens.
I'm not saying he shouldn't have that attitude of "fear me" and "I am the best" but I feel like it probably stay in his thoughts. Confident players know they are the best and they show it on the field, but that's the extent. Cocky players tend to always remind people of how great they are..
