Reflecting on the loss to LSU in the National Title game

Dec 5, 2022, 9:15 AM

Is that LSU team possibly the best team of all time or right there with them? Burrow could possibly be the best QB in the NFL. Jefferson might be the best wr in the NFL. Chase right up there too. At the time we played them, I didn't realize what a buzzsaw we were running into and how talented they were. That was a great team.

That Clemson team got caught in a buzzsaw. It would beat every team in this current field, probably handily

It would come down to them and Georgia.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I honestly don't think Georgia 2022 would stand a chance

Dec 5, 2022, 9:30 AM

I don't think any team in the history of College football stood a chance except that Clemson 2018 team. That's a game I would have loved to see.

I am talking vs our Clemson team back then. I think we both are. It would have been interesting. I would make Clemson a 6pt favorite vs this Georgia team.

I watched that entire game SEC refs gave that LSU team the Natty. Lawrence didn't play best game but LSU DBs and Safeties held Clemson receivers most of the game. Like SEC let Alabama receivers do last 2 years. Sugar Bowl officiating never been good to Dabo's Tigers. One year Alabama picked semi in Irving cause they knew Sugar Bowl take Clemson out. Cause most SEC teams would pick their home bowl Sugar Bowl to another bowl location. Sugar Bowl was definitely anti 47.

They truly were an amazing assemblage of future NFL talent.

Dec 5, 2022, 9:23 AM

If there was somehow a way, seeing that bunch vs our own 2018 team would be one of the most incredible college football games ever imagined, I imagine. That would be the only way to determine the Greatest of the Greatest. These things are impotent.

LSU was good but Clemson also got severely out-schemed, especially on offense.

People seem to forget how badly our star-studded offense got schooled by their ho-hum defense. If we play that game 4 times Clemson wins twice.

Even though LSU won the game, that Clemson team was good enough to blow everybody out in this year's field by 35+ points per game. UGA is the only team that could keep it under 20.

I agree 100% on out-schemed aspect. You nailed it. They had more talent, but our scheme didn't give us a chance. Buzzsaw

That LSU team broke numerous NCAA rules and should not be...

considered.

By the way, the 2018 Clemson team is the best college team ever assembled. The Alabama team we blew out was considered by some to be the best college team in history. Again, we blew them out.

Umm no.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We just couldnt stop those guys..but

Dec 5, 2022, 9:32 AM

the more disappointing thing is how poorly TL played in that game. Just a lot of missed throws. He hits on half of those and its a shootout to the final whistle.

Our D shut them down for a while but our offense got into 3 and out mode for a while and the defense eventually crumbled.

Re: Reflecting on the loss to LSU in the National Title game

Dec 5, 2022, 9:46 AM

We had the D, but not the O. Was that on the staff or the players on O? It was a total mismatch.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Reflecting on the loss to LSU in the National Title game

Dec 5, 2022, 9:52 AM

It was both. LSU had tons of offensive talent, but as another poster pointed out TL didn't play well. He missed and overthrew guys on a bunch of critical plays. If he doesn't I think the game is a nail biter.

the mismatch on offense wasn't really talent, it was the coaching/scheme. That was the BIG mismatch imop.

if the 2018 Clemson Defense was playing

Dec 5, 2022, 9:35 AM

LSU would have lost.
They hit Clemson during a rebuild

Re: if the 2018 Clemson Defense was playing

Dec 5, 2022, 9:49 AM

Maybe. We will never know, but that O at LSU at the time could have scorched just about any D. I agree though, that 2018 D may have been able to pull it off. Even to this day we are still realizing what we went against. There were probably 3 NFL Hall of Famers on the LSU team.

Yes when you hold on offense makes it easier for QB. WF didn't same think last year when they had those explosive down field passes. Even best defense will fold if QB have forever to look for open man

Holding always happens consistently in every game NFL and college. It's part of the sport. That wasn't a major factor. We were doing the same. It's part of football, subtly holding by the OL. It's part of the game.

LSU playing for Natty in home stadium knew we'd be screwed if didn't play perfect game. Had that Natty played in another stadium Tigers would have one. Back in the day before BCS and playoff system SEC used buy Championships.

Because I watch the NFL and guys from that LSU team are looking like NFL Hall of Fame type players one day. It gets more clear. I watch sports non stop. I like talking sports. I am not that sensitive about it. It's just talking sports.

Be honest you were pulling for LSU that game now weren't you. Lawrence would doing better that Burrow's in pros in drafted by team with OL and defense. College Coach killed Lawrence's first season in NFL plus Clemson brother got hurt preseason.

They held there way to that game . . .

Dec 5, 2022, 9:56 AM

and they held in order to "win" that game too. No, I'm not talking about the garden variety no-calls that pepper every game . . . I mean bad - truly bad, repetitive holdings - on huge scoring plays and plays that set up scores, too. It accounted for about the margin of victory or more. Go back and just watch LSU OL #76 ALONE - he alone was atrocious, even though he wasn't the only guy holding.

W/o that, they never would have "won" that game. Frankly, they never would have beaten Texas or Bama that year either w/o similar infractions.

LSU isn't the the 2019 National Champs. The record books reflect it, but then again, the record books reflect a lot of things.
