Meet the sicklefin redhorse: nature's sleek, fin-tastic river guardian!
The Sicklefin Redhorse, with its distinctive sickle-shaped dorsal fin, can grow up to 25 inches. Its olive-colored body has a coppery sheen, dark lower fins often tinted yellow or orange, and a mostly red tail fin. During spawning, the dorsal fin turns red.

This species is found only in the Blue Ridge portions of the Hiwassee and Little Tennessee river systems in North Carolina and Georgia. The Sicklefin Redhorse Conservation Committee monitors them in Brasstown Creek using a fyke net during spawning. Fish are tagged with PIT tags, measured, weighed, sexed, and released. A PIT tag antenna system tracks their migration to estimate population size and survival.
