Dabo made his mark on college football by following his standards and priorities in recruiting and managing the program. Clemson evaluates the talent and gives out the fewest scholarship offers. The scholarships are true offers, unlike most schools that offer hundreds of athletes and then withdraws them if they get a better player. Most schools don’t have time to do the in depth evaluation that Clemson does. Dabo wants the right fit between the player and the program. He demands character as well as talent. He tells everyone that they must compete for a starting or back up position. He also tells them they owe him a diploma, which is why Clemson leads the nation in graduating players. Clemson has much lower discipline problems than the vast majority of teams. Even with all the self imposed limitations, Dabo has taken Clemson to the top of the mountain twice and in contention many times. Clemson is in the very top of total wins, CFP appearances, developing 5 stars and putting them in the NFL, total wins over ranked teams and many other metrics even when adding in the latest “down years”. Only a handful of full of teams would refuse to trade records of accomplishments with Clemson!
As far as the transfer portal, how many players in the portal tick all of Clemson’s boxes? They have to be very talented and come to Clemson with no guarantee of playing. They have to want a degree. They must be of good character. If a player is leaving his team because of not getting playing time and looking for a big NIL payday, it is doubtful he would get an offer. It also would be unfair to the other players to hold the portal players to a lesser standard than the recruits.
I believe that Dabo will get Clemson back on the mountain, if not on the top. Not sure how anyone could name an adequate coach to replace Dabo, but if you have one, name them in the comments.
I love Clemson BECAUSE we are different. Having uncompromising standards is something to be admired and proud of.
I will support Dabo regardless of the future record. He is one of a kind and we are damx lucky to have him.

No, just respect integrity over winning. I am a Clemson fan, and not a win at all cost bandwagon fan College football is out of control, and I am not a fan of where it is going. This is already trickling down to high school. I do not like the direction sports is going. There is a reason I watch amateur sports instead of pros, and the differences are almost gone.

are you saying that the other 132 FBS teams that utilize the Portal and NIL have no integrity?
the "Holier than thou" mentality that runs rampant on tnet is mind blowing.

Why does utilizing every legally available avenue to build the best team and program constitute “winning at all costs?”
There are plenty of great kids who are super talented who are being smart businesspeople by wanting to maximize their NIL opportunities. This is no different than an elite player wanting to go to a program with great coaching, top facilities, and a place that best prepares him for the NFL.
There are also plenty of great kids in the transfer portal who are changing schools for a better opportunity.

past that once it becomes professional sports he'll be out of here. Enjoy it while ya still can. He enjoys and is passionate about building men first. You'd be right in assuming that helping them make some money can be part of that. But you and I both know this won't be about helping the young player much longer and maybe its naive to think it ever has been about that. Dabo is still trying that avenue though. I commend him for trying to be a pioneer in that way to do it. Is it sustainable? Its hard to tell b/c business is business and has no use for whatever "the right thing" is. Its all about the bottom line. Hope not. Maybe they'll change some rules to accommodate a more rational method to compensating these kids while preserving work ethic and ethical standards among competitors.

People are hoping we will be great again one day. I think we will. We haven't been for a bit now though.

Amen! Dabo Swinney is the best thing that ever happened to Clemson football in so many ways. He has taken us to the top without compromising his standards, and I believe he will again, but if we are never in the playoffs again, I will remain a Dabo fan.

For the sake of debate Exbrown, what prevents Oklahoma, Texas, Bama and Ohio State offering the Clemson recruits the day or week after Clemson has done all the homework and offered the young man? Seems like that is happening some already.

Nothing ever has or will prevent other teams from doing that. But Dabo does not utilize other people’s evaluation of players. He evaluates things other than raw talent, and trusts is own judgement. There are other teams that offer anybody and everybody without their own evaluation. That is truly why Clemson makes so few offers compared to other teams.

At his age (54) Dabo's got at least 2 more National Titles left in him. The sports prognosticators hate this guy because they would prefer Clemson Football to be an 7-5 program, sort of "stay in your middle of the road" place. They would rather see a Florida State or a Miami rule in the ACC. He is simply a better coach than Norvell or Cristobal, hate to burst their bubbles. "you can't always get what you want", as The great Mick Jagger sung in a song back in the day.
