I hope nobody gets offended with my personal take, but I would rather Clemson go to the Orange Bowl this year than to get absolutely boat raced in the CFP for a third year in a row. If we run the table in the ACC an Orange Bowl win would be better from a recruiting standpoint and also allow the team to cap the year off with a win, instead of another soul crushing loss. Albeit, I do not know at this point if we even go undefeated in the ACC with teams such as BC and Pitt potentially have a great amount of talent as well. Just as Alabama had a down year only a few short seasons ago, I believe this could actually be helpful in the long run to go back to a normal bowl, and win there. I believe at this point there is some level of apathy with the team and coaches, and not making the CFP could help to re-light the fire so to speak.

My pulse is low due to some of my political stances, I am not in fact a supporter of that sess-pool down in the midlands.

And a CFP loss will be a better recruiting tool than a NY6 win 100 times out of 100. You can't win a title if you're not invited to the dance and having the longest CFP streak in the country is a very good tool to have.
I also think this defense isn't getting boatraced by anyone. The offense isn't at championship caliber and I'm not sure it can get there by the CFP but this defense is far better than the one last year based mainly on the DL.

I'm strictly speaking about the offensive efficiency with regards to those teams. I know both of those teams also have solid defenses that could potentially give some trouble. I have no doubt that our defense this year is 15-0 worthy. However, if our offense (especially OL wise) doesn't improve, I could potentially see us dropping at least 1-2 more games on the schedule.

I disagree with you on a couple major points. No offense is going to find efficiency against our defense if Georgia couldn't. And nobody on our schedule has nearly enough talent as UGA on the defensive side of the ball to stifle this offense as bad as it was Saturday.
I'm not saying it will be incredibly potent, but this is still basically a brand new offense that is going to have to gel. It just didn't have the benefit of an SC State tune-up game to open the season.
Pitt, BC, and NC State might put up a fight but none of those teams have the horses to do it over 60 minutes barring some very bad turnover margins.

I will add that I think the offense would have been more prepared for UGA had it been a second week game and not the opener. We may have had more offensive cohesiveness that would have led to better on the field production.

So I guess what I'm really trying to get at here, is that I do not want us to become like Oklahoma. A team that has traditionally been in the CFP but is never a real threat to get past the semi-final round. If we potentially make it this year (I don't think we will) and we lose, that would be two years in a row of getting knocked out in the first round. I don't think that would look any better from a recruiting standpoint, than if we went to a NY6 bowl and won. Though the counterargument being a loss in the CFP looks ten-fold better than a potential loss in a NY6 bowl.

Way too early to know these things right now. Defense way ahead at this stage, but the offense might improve greatly over the next three months. But I agree that being invited to the playoff is now greater than merely going to a bowl. No guarantee you win a bowl game, what with opt outs, injuries, covid, and who the opponent is. The other team may be more motivated, especially since Clemson missing the playoff could be a huge letdown for the Tigers.

All right -- for discussion. My take is Clemson will continue to compete to win them all and will win them all the rest due to a strong Defense and the complete absence of ACC competition.
I think your premise is, on a hypothetical basis, would Clemson be better served by winning a second tier bowl or getting hammered by Bama or Ohio State? I do not see this Clemson team beating Bama in a 1-4 playoff match-up, but I can see fellow Clemson alum & fans convincing themselves we can compete against the best if we win out. Time will tell.

I can agree with your take, I just listed the teams that worry me the most. As others have mentioned, there is a long season ahead and the offense can and hopefully will drastically improve. The question is, if we go undefeated the rest of the season, do we stand a chance of still making the playoff. The Orange Bowl is the best trade-off in my mind, if we fail to make the CFP.

If we fail to make the playoffs, I will be excited and pulling hard for Clemson to beat SEC opponent on New Year's Eve! Less than 4 months away.

I never said it dooms us, I said that I think that we may miss the playoffs this year. Its not a thought that also isn't in the back of every other Clemson fans head I'm sure. I'm discussing the best possible outcome if we do not make the playoff/better scenarios that being outgunned in the CFP semi-final.

Ah yes, just because I critically analyze Clemson and their projections for the rest of the season, then I must be a Carolina fan. I'm sorry that I realize faults with the team this year and worry about offensive production and the implications of not having a potent offense with regards to the playoff. Shame on me for not being confident that we can compete with an Alabama archetype this year.

Our only quality opponent on the schedule this season was Georgia. All media pundits in general hate Clemson and will push the narrative that we don't belong in the playoff regardless of production the rest of the season. There is a bit of apathy regarding the teams that have traditionally been in the playoff. This creates the perfect recipe for Clemson being left out this year. Based on the one data point we have thus far, the offense will need significant improvement to win out in the ACC the rest of the season even with a the brick wall that is BV's defense. Will the offense improve (likely yes), will they (OL especially) be able to compete with the other teams inside the Top-5? That has yet to be determined but will more than likely produce a similar to result as what we saw against UGA. Feel free to present your case since you disagree with my take, and so eloquently called me an "Idiot".

I think we'll win out, including the ACC championship. However, I don't think that will be good enough to get into the playoff. Even if we do get in, our days of winning the NC are over until Dabo decides to seriously address the OL and update the archaic offense.
