Syracuse board

I posted that in the wrong thread. Apologies. And they're not sure if we travel well. Think they're in for a surprise.

"They are just like us?"

Feb 27, 2013, 10:52 AM

Surprise is an understatement.

from a major conglomerate of boards like scout or espn, just like Tigernet.

HTH.

It's funny that we think everyone knows Clemson. In Boston,

at the first BC-Clemson game - I was having a nice conversation with a BC Alum. He laughed and said, "You know, I always thought Clemson was a historically all-black school."

Feb 27, 2013, 1:57 PM

someone will ask where I'm from, and I start with the Greenville, SC area. Blank stare. Sort of near Clemson University? More of a blank stare. Upstate SC? Stare with obvious look of don't know what Upstate means. Finally, I give up and say between ATL and Charlotte. That usually sews up the conversation.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wow, what a collection of ignorant dooshebags

Feb 27, 2013, 10:59 AM

You would think they had done something in the last quarter century. They will simply be another one of those northern schools like BC that no one cares about and everyone beats every year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Wow, what a collection of ignorant dooshebags

Feb 27, 2013, 11:06 AM

I think we beat them this year but at their place this game is one that worries me.

Feb 27, 2013, 10:59 AM

I am scared from the big orange. Who ever chosen that as their mascot, ought to be hung and what an idiot for selecting an orange.. Really, and orange!!!

we can't go back to the good old days when the inferior races were fodder for our sports nicknames.

Feb 27, 2013, 11:35 AM

The nicknames were chose for courage, strength, and pride of local tribes - not to mock them. Idiot.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Some were, some weren't.

Feb 27, 2013, 11:46 AM

Those who have the blessing of a tribe are fine in my book. You're kidding yourself if you think some of the names weren't chosen to play on the 'savage' reputation of the Native American.

2024 student level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg2008_ncaa_champ.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-clemsonpoker489.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

do some research

Feb 27, 2013, 2:16 PM

In a Sports Illustrated poll, 75% of native americans did not find "Redskins" offensive

In a national survey, 90% of Native Americans were not offended.

http://www.volokh.com/posts/1242423155.shtml

And check out this excerpt:

Finally, while I'd have thought that most Indians would indeed be offended by the term "Redskins," given that it has often been used as a pejorative, the results that the surveys report are not at all implausible: Given that naming a team after some person or group is usually a sign of respect -- one would rarely name a team after something that one thinks is weak or contemptible (the U.C. Santa Cruz Banana Slugs are a rare and facetious exception) -- it seems quite reasonable that many Indians would focus on that more than they would on disrespectful uses of the same term in other contexts.

It's up for a vote?

Feb 27, 2013, 11:42 AM

That would have been the first one I changed. A lot of them were, at least plausibly, tributes to the tribes. "Redskins," is like calling a team the Wetbacks.

2024 student level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg2008_ncaa_champ.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-clemsonpoker489.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Feb 27, 2013, 11:46 AM

voted to keep it. Just like my high school went up for a vote regarding our mascot of "Indians"...70% voted in favor to keep it, 20% didn't care, and 10% wanted it changed. County ignored the vote (both at school level and at town level) and changed the mascot.

Feb 27, 2013, 11:49 AM [ in reply to It's not up for a vote, and even if it were, it would be ]

People are generally self-interested and unconcerned with bigotry that doesn't affect them.

County looked after it's own interests, primarily public relations. Have there been *any* negative effects of the name change?

Reminded me an awful lot of Maryland's repugnant fan base.
