Swinney on when Cade Klubnik will play

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney was asked on his call-in show Monday about the plan to play 5-star freshman QB Cade Klubnik:
“It all starts with DJ (Uiagalelei). It’s not a situation where we’re going to sub early or anything like that. But we do want to give Cade as much playing time as we can throughout this season. As far as where we are in the game, DJ is the starter and he earned that. If that changes, I guess everybody will know it. Our plan is for DJ to have an amazing season and for Cade to be able to get as much as playing time as he possibly can because I do think he brings some special gifts to the table as well. That will all be game-by-game, series-by-series, week-by-week decision-making as we go along the way.
“Just like with DJ (as a freshman), he came in behind Trevor. Trevor was the starter. DJ was the top guy in the country coming in here just like Cade. We wanted to get DJ as much playing time as possible as we could and we certainly did that...No different than with Cade. We’ll just see how it goes within the flow of the game and in the season.”

Sounds like there's no "plan" to get Cade early...

...PT. No "3rd series package" or anything structured like that. If DJ performs, he stays on the field until game situations permit getting Cade some playing time. As it should be for the starter. No surprise here.

A few 3 and outs, with bad decisions or execution on third down, and Cade will play to see if he can move the chains.
The point is to keep our offense on the field. Remember when we would run 80 to 100 plays per game. We controlled those games. The Defense dominated those games. Three and outs just put pressure on the Defense. DJ5 or Cade, whoever moves the chains, controls the game and scores should play!

I don't know why anybody expected anything else. Dabo has

been clear - DJ is the starter, and has looked good in camp. He's also been clear that Klubnick is talented and has pushed DJ some, but DJ is the man, and has won the job. He hasn't been iffy or hesitant about any of that.
From there it's pretty clear and pretty simple. DJ is the starter until he falters or Klubnick surpasses him in Dabo and Streeter's eyes. If either of those things happen, Klubnick will get the opportunity to step up. In the mean time, he'll be given every opportunity to get real game experience as a back-up when the game is not on the line. As he gains experience, he could see PT with games on the line in special situations when his particular skill set would be deemed effective.

Best situation... DJU does well in the first half. Goes into halftime, offense makes adjustments and takes the ball and scores on the first drive of the second half. Then Cade comes in and plays till the middle of the 4th quarter. Then HJ comes in for a couple drives, then let one of the other guys get a drive before the game is over. I see that happening the first few weeks. Everybody wins.... Play 4 or 5 QBs a game.
Maybe even work in the back-up holder so Swinney gets some rest holding all of those PATs.

I look for Cade to get clean up time for the first few games as a chance for him to get acclimatized to the new speed of the game and go through a set number of plays. Call this what you want but it will be a prep for if DJU struggles when the schedule stiffens up in the middle of the season. I don't look for Dabo to end two straight seasons trying to explain poor QB play from the same player. I hope he's not needed but Cade won't be thrown into his first game trailing after halftime and told to fix it. If he is they'll be celebrating at the North Avenue Trade School.
