Sunday game rewatch with the emotions taken out

Well, I'll start with DJ. I mentioned last week that old habits are creeping back up especially staring down his receivers. That and simply not taking care of the ball, he got benched and Cade come in to hand the ball off. Such a great pass on the two-point conversion but he needs more experience.
The offensive line I thought played well as both backs did too. Mafa looked quick and boy Ship had that fumble but came roaring back for us in the second half. 64 whiffed a couple of times but overall they weren't too bad.
Ngata actually had a pretty good game but Williams just steals the show with everything he can do. The punt return was brilliant. Ed Williams had some good blocks in the game, something Ngata needs to work on and it's funny because Ed Williams is much slighter.
Seems like every game Allen drops a pass but he still played well.
I thought Streeter called a good game overall but running DJ on critical 3rd and 4th downs with the box stacked was a real head-scratcher. DJ didn't have a chance on that 4th down, bad call in my opinion.
The DEs didn't do that well until the second half. Murphy was getting held all over the place but he had a face mask and offsides. The right side DE were not sealing the edge and Syracuse ran that way a lot exposing them.
The DL and LB were continuing to give up cut-back lanes to the QB and the LBs had probably their worst game of the season. Simpson did not play well at all and was continually out of position. We really miss Carter.
They seemed to pick on Jones the whole game but The Syracuse QB had too much time.
Special teams were amazing again this game, the punter, returns, kicker, and coverage, were all crazy good.
Looking back at the game, I was a little less convinced that Wes Goodwin was the problem. The LBs were not having their eyes in the right place but Trotter got the feel of the QB in the second half. The front seven didn't play that well until we wore them out. Having three men on 19 at the end of the game was brilliant.
38 home games in a row, wow. No wonder we are a bunch a of spoiled ole fans on TNET!! Go Tigers!!!

Good read. I wonder if the QB run would work better if he went back to pass sending the Receivers deep opening up some lanes. Great win.

First memory that popped in my mind. I was like the last time this happened we go boat raced.
Mind you this game did not have that feel. This game had the feel of wow were are dominating these guys and losing due to the 14 point swing etc.

I really dont know if DJ enjoys playing football. He made a comment last week that Cade had fun playing the game. Maybe reading to much into the statement.

I especially agree with you on wondering why Streeter ran DJ on 3rd and 4th down. Shipley and Mafah were pounding the ball, and frankly, DJ is just not that good a runner. I also had to shake my head when we were running it down their throat, and for no apparent reason, he calls for a deep corner route to Randall (edit: it might have been Ngata) with double coverage and puts us behind the sticks.
On the positive side, I like seeing some "new" plays... like getting away from the bubble screen and throwing to the backs in the flat. That has been much more effective because the defenses aren't covering Mafah and Shipley... now just waiting for him to turn one of those into a wheel route and burn them deep.
Overall, encouraged ("guardedly optimistic," but not yet "impressed") with Streeter's play calling.
Great win, considering all the turnovers.

Agree with all the points. It does seem like Steeter thinks DJ is like our QBs that could run over the past 10 years. Can he do it yes. Is it great no. Cade is actually much quicker and faster. The play calling needs to reflect this. Running a speed option is not a good call with DJ on the whole.
Streeter is pretty average at this point, but definitely better than Tony at playcalling. I would like to see a bit more balance at times and more scheming to get the wideouts open.

Your second takes are generally much more objective and this one is no exception. The punter is really looking better. None of that running rugby c r a p. Just kicking the ball. I thought Spud was going to get his wish a couple of times with AW on the punt returns. I haven’t watched the TV version yet - going to do that this evening, but from the replays I saw at the stadium I’m inclined to give Murphy a pass on the face mask. Looked like a hustle penalty and just a totally inadvertent finger getting caught in the mask. He definitely blew up his man and got to the QB quickly on the play. One of those things that just happens when you are playing hard.

the refs guy, but they were awful once again. I still can't believe they didn't call an INT on that deep throw to Randall (the announcers blew it off too). Unbelievable.

There are some real craps on here.
@pacificbeachtiger that was a great summation and very objective. Ty fir the contribution even if it doesn't align perfectly with others views on the game.
IMHO u were spot on.

My opinion is that on the 4th down play, it was supposed to be an option, similar to an earlier play where Uiagalelei actually did pitch it to Mafah. It was covered, so Uiagalelei took it himself.
That said, I believe it was Dabo's mistake to go for it rather than kick the field goal. I think you take the points and make it a 4 point game. Then let Potter put the kickoff through the end zone, and make Syracuse go 75 yards. I feel like Dabo "threw good money after bad" with that decision.

... was that ever the truth Saturday.
Syracuse has a good team. But honestly, they only got the lead and kept it close because we kept trying to give them the game. All of our turnovers were on the Syracuse side of the field. The scoop and score had a scary resemblance to the WVU debacle in the Orange Bowl.
None of the turnovers they benefited from were the result of great defensive play. Maybe they caused the Shipley fumble, but once again, it was out of character for him and just another example of the funky way the ball was bouncing for us.
I hate to take anything away from Syracuse, but being +3 on take always and getting a 21-7 lead should have seen them winning the game easily.
Play the game 10 times, and Clemson wins all 10 times. Probably 8 times they win by blow out.

I noticed they started blitzing and running alot more zone blitzes where the DEs were dropping(Henry gave up a td on one) once Goodwin started mixing in some blitzes the DL started getting more 1v1s and started to make an impact. Sending 4 every play just won't work no matter how good the DL is, holding is alot easier to get away with if there's double teams hiding it and I also noticed the DEs in the first half were crashing down into the Tackle and that also a)slows the pass rush and b) allows for some holding to not be seen.
LBs and DEs swapping containment responsibility has been a communication/execution mess all year these 2 past qbs just happen to expose it the worse bc they are both athletic runners.

Agree completely on not running DJ in critical short yardage.
DJ missed a number of huge plays where his receiver was separated and running wide open. Williams was 5 yards beyond the defender twice and he under threw it both times. He was streaking across the middle wide open toward the goal line another time and DJ did not see him. Randall was well behind his defender once too and DJ threw it late, giving the safety time to get there and the DB recovery time. The INT early was another late throw.
I hope he was just having a bad day. He really was off his game. I thought he’d been fairly accurate this year. Time will tell I guess.

RE: Running DJ against a stacked box. Isn't that a QB audible situation? The OC can't know how many guys are going to be in the box when the QB snaps the ball. It is the QB's job to recognize the overloaded front and change the play.

to trust Mafa a little more. He would have gotten the TD and the 1st on 4th and 2.
I would like to know more if DJ's hand was hurt after the SU player stomped on it resulting in the 15 yard penalty on us.
