Strong (Clemson D) vs. "Skrong" (FSU O). Both teams are

replacing numerous players on the other side of the ball. They have the home field advantage but we have the revenge factor. Anybody's game... Comments?

It's possible

Get some pressure on "Crab Legs" Winston, avoid stupid turnovers, much smarter QB play than last year, and we would have a shot at bouncing them. One thing's for sure - if the team doesn't believe they can do it, then we have no shot. They'll need the confidence to play balls out for 60 minutes.

I totally agree. We avoid turnovers and maybe even force a few we've got a very good shot

They'll have an experienced OL but they lost their best WRs

and RBs. I expect the DLs to be a true 2-deep and our DBs to be much better prepared. These match ups should be somewhat of an offset. I may be overly optimistic but I think our running game will pick up and compliment a 'controlled' passing attack. That's my take and I'm sticking to it... The real key is who wants it more. That's up to the players... I think we're saying pretty much the same thing.

I agree. I believe our guys can play with them and beat them. It'll be one heck of a ball game.

Need to control the clock w good running game and short passes/tosses. Force a few turnovers. Get just some pressure on Winston.

In the NC game crab legs didn't look great under pressure. I guess it helped that Auburn was stealing there signals.

The game is competely winnable, we have plenty of talent to play w them, and I don't think their home field advantage is all that great. Although definitely a sellout. Depends on the start time but if we have beaten GA first game will be prime time.

We have played great football the last few time we played at Fsu. We didn't protect the field position the last time we was down there. They started with a short field in the second half everytime we had to kick the ball to them. We had a two TD lead at the half. We didn't get a few much needed calls on a few third downs plays with our receivers. Plus our defense spent to much time on the field during the second half which cause them to look winded down the stretch. As we was leaving the stadium, I could hear fsu fans talking about who is this Clemson team and how good our team was and how well we played. Some local fans didn't know where or haven't heard about Clemson. They was asking about the location of Clemson. If our defense play to their level, we will have a chances throughout the ball to control the game and seal a victory. We're known for holding down or stopping top notch runningbacks. Winston has rasied the bar with his mouth and attitude. He should be in pain by the time we hit the 4th quarter. His mouth has wrote many checks this past season. (Crab Incident)? I guess he spent it all on Clemson because he stated "he owns Clemson". Our DEFENSE will prove that his mouth will cost him his *PAST* this year. Can't wait to get back to Tallie.

Clemson tends to be more focused during away games

Jun 6, 2014, 11:47 PM

I expect a much closer game this Fall. I hate FSU, but they were definitely the most complete team and best team in the nation. Auburn played FSU close because they were helped out with the ex-FSU coach who knew what plays were going to be called and they still lost.

The Clemson Defense will be the nastiest it's been since the Danny Ford era.

It's obviously imperative that the offense stays on the field and protects the football for the defense to really matter, as we know all too well. Especially with an offense like ours that can seem boom or bust at times.

Your defense can only help you so much when your offense turns the ball over 3 times in the 1st half...or even more substantially, when the offense doesn't capitalize on potential opportunities to stop the bleeding and shift momentum when the defense gets a stop or two when everything else is going wrong.

For example, when the score was 17-7 - if the offense gets more than 13 net years on 2 drives which started in great field position (CLEM 42, CLEM 48) after a critical INT by Breeland and another stop, we might be talking about how the defense saved our arses instead of looking at the final score and wondering what went wrong.

Even if it were only field goals which would have required as little as 2 first downs per drive, we're talking about a 17-13 game which may have allowed the D to loosen up a bit. Would FSU have followed with the 95 yard drive that sealed our fate had the offense been able to seize momentum? Keep in mind, I'm talking about the two drives AFTER we screwed the pooch with the turnovers, so those are already accounted for here and I'm absolutely pointing fingers at the offense for not taking advantage when the defense did all it could to keep us in the game when EVERYTHING was going wrong (heck, even FSU's first TD was perfectly covered by Robinson - a 1st rd receiver just happened to make the play on the ball).

We can replay the scenarios all day, but in a system like ours, it's critical that the offense seizes the pace of the game when the defense is getting stops even under adverse conditions. I like to point this out because mouthbreathers like Morondawg and MoronNC who don't know any better will point to the FSU game as a defensive lapse when it was really anything but.

I agree for the most part but there were definitely some D

Jun 6, 2014, 9:54 PM

'mistakes'. Our D last year at the time of the FSU game was nothing like it was at the end of the season... Stop some third down scrambles against SCar and we could have probably overcome even 6 TOs...

Home field advantage is a factor, and revenge can be to

Jun 6, 2014, 10:04 PM

some extent as well. However, these are often over-hyped and over-rated, in my opinion, and there are two other forward looking factors that will trump those every time:

1. Having better, more talented football players.
2. Being better prepared.

Turnovers skewed the results last year, but I think FSU had both of these factors in their favor. In spite of losing Sammy, Tajh, and some other super talented players, I think overall we have consistently improved our talent depth-wise, and should be able to match up well this time. If we are better prepared this time, we could certainly negate the home field advantage and win at FSU.

Another factor in ou favor - battle testing

Jun 6, 2014, 10:30 PM

We will have played at least 60 minutes against a ranked and skilled team. If I'm not mistaken, we will be the first serious opponent of the season for FSU. So they will still be working out some bugs with the newer players on both sides of the ball.

Re: Another factor in ou favor - battle testing

Jun 6, 2014, 11:16 PM

Agree, great point. Most defense will and should be ahead of the offense this early in the season. With the depth and experience, we should have a big advantage going into this game early in the season. Our players seen to start out well down in Tallie.

I expect a better game this year

Jun 6, 2014, 10:47 PM

but a Clemson victory is a long shot unless FSU has injuries or suspensions to key players.

Early media prediction ranked FSU's offense 2nd behind Oregon and the defense #1 in the Nation. Media today said FSU will have at least 12 draft eligible players expected to be drafted next year with several 1st rounders.

There is a talent disparity everywhere except the D-line where you may have an edge. Our DL will be very good.

The 2 receivers who accounted for over 300 yards against you last year were Green and O'leary, both of whom are returning along with several WR's with experience and (2) 5* Recruits.

Freeman had a great game against you, but he's being replaced with Carlos Williams who averaged 7 yds per carry last year and has been mentioned by media as a potential Heisman candidate. We have several other seasoned RB's and (2) 5* who have never taken a snap.

Several analysts believe we have the best OL and DB's in the country.

This team may very well be better than last year's, and a year ago Fisher thought this would be the year we would compete for the NC, not last year.

Beating GA will likely be a necessary step to being competitive against FSU, because we are loaded this year.

They do play Ok state first game. We are better than OK state but it is neutral field and should be a decent team.
Definitely not a cupcake game.

If we attack Winston and hit him like we did miller in the orange bowl we will have a chance. We lost some ammo not weapons in sammy and company, now we have to see if when we reload, our ammo is as effective. We have a lot of unknowns and that provides prep problems for people. Ex. Sammy and jameis' frosh seasons. Tigers could beat anybody or be an average squad. Find out by November who we were.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't see any disparity at LBs... they'll be "very good".***
