Here is the 7:30 update. Basically good news for me.

The model has pushed the path slightly southward, away from me. Last night when I went to bed it looked like I would be getting several hours of 60+ winds with gusts up to 80.

According to the local meteorologist (just saw him on TV) it now looks like we will be getting about 6 hours of 45-65 mph winds, mostly between midnight and 6 AM tomorrow.

I'm hoping the 8:00 update from NOAA will show the continual drift southward. (8:00 PM last night I was less than 15 miles from the eye. Now, according to the 5:00 AM update I'm about 45 miles from the eye. Those 30 miles will hake a huge difference. (When I say "eye" I don't means the center of the eye, I mean the part of the eyewall that comes closest to my home.

But, on the other hand, I walked out this morning to put my garbage can out. (Yes, they will pick up garbage today. Winds won't get to 20+ until after sundown tonight.) Well, my neighbor - directly across the street from me, decided he would trim his tree and pile all the debris in his front yard. I can't believe he thinks the city will pick it up today. Let's just cut down limbs as big as 4 inches in diameter and pile them up by the street. What could possibly go wrong?

Hope it works out for you. I sheltered in place for Hugo. Big mistake. I was forced by Uncle Sugar to shelter in place for Katrina, even bigger mistake. I'll never stick around for a major storm again. Keep us updated as able.

Please let us know that you are ok. Also, if you lose power, flip the breakers to off. We are still getting power back in the CSRA. I got mine back on Sunday. A friend of a friend had their house catch fire yesterday when the power came back on. We were told a week ago to make sure to flip the breakers.

Bret - will be praying for you my friend. I worry about putting too much stock in what the meteorologists say, especially when it will be so close. They missed the track of Helene through GA and SC by 100 miles last week. And this was after it had made landfall and it was only 300 miles away from us in the upstate. They kept saying this right up until about 3 hours before it passed 100 miles east of Atlanta through the upstate of S.C. And as you said, 30 miles makes a big difference with a storm like this.
This wasn’t my first rodeo either. We were in the Ft Lauderdale area when Andrew hit S Florida. It was forecast to hit Ft Lauderdale and at the last minute wobbled a little south and missed us by about 30 miles to the south. That 30 miles was the difference between losing a couple of shingles with very little power interruption where we were and total devastation in southern Dade County. Similar in St Thomas in 1995. Marylin was forecast to hit San Juan and instead went right over St Thomas. 90% of the structures on the island had roof damage and 60% lost the whole roof.
You said yourself, 30 miles makes a huge difference. I’m just saying the forecasters’ margin of error is more like 100 miles.
I understand wanting to stay. We stayed through both of those. But we were in our 30s and in much better shape to help ourselves and others than we are now in our 60s.
If you choose to stay I will worry about you and your wife. And will also pray for your safety. We have a spare room if you decide to come north.

Bret, it sounds like you’ve been in FL for a long while so you know how these things go. The forecast is never perfect and these storms take unexpected turns all the time. Prayers for you and your family.

Yeah, I've had plenty of experience.

Seriously, it there was any concern for physical danger we would have left Sunday. If we lived on the coast we would have been long gone.

If my wife wasn't sick, we would have probably left yesterday, and certainly this morning.

But, in the part of the state we live in, what we will see is wind damage mostly. There will be lots of trees down, debris, and street flooding.

We just reshingled our roof a couple of years ago and got "hurricane rated shingles" (which gave us a nice break on our homeowners insurance).

The only chance of physical danger is a direct hit from a tornado. And, that is something that is endemic to central Florida, hurricanes or no.

I really appreciate everyone's concern. I just posted to let y'all know I may be out of contact for a few days beacuse of a power outage, not because of physical harm.

One good thing for the neighbor, if the City does not pick up the limbs, they will be gone from his yard in several days anyway.
