“The first is to strengthen the US’ supply chain sovereignty so as to eliminate the leverage that other countries have over it. This might not be pursued solely for the sake of it, but perhaps also as contingency planning, thus hinting at concerns about a major war. The two most likely adversaries are China and Iran, and a hot conflict with either would throw the global economy into turmoil. Trump might therefore want to prioritize reshoring in order for the US to preemptively minimize the consequences.
The second goal builds upon the first and relates to the US prompting every country to renegotiate their bilateral ties, during which time the US could offer to reduce tariffs in exchange for certain concessions. These could take the form of distancing themselves from China to a degree and gradually replacing it with the US with their top trade partner. Other incentives could also be dangled such as technology-sharing and military deals. The purpose would be to weaken China by chipping away its foreign trade.
And finally, the last goal is to shape the emerging world order, to which end the US had to speed up the end of the present one by shaking the global economy to its core like Trump just did. Obtaining supply chain sovereignty and replacing China as the top trade partner for as many countries as possible would give the US’ leverage over a sizeable portion of the world. While it’s premature to speculate the ways in which the US could exploit this, it’ll almost certainly be in the context of its systemic rivalry with China.“

By doing the tariffs first, and then creating powerful motivation by America’s international suppliers, the framework for fast, comprehensive resetting of trade relations has replaced the slow, low-motivational historical approach in which the framework for fast of reference had been to accept all (including unfair) tariffs, and then to conduct time consuming re-negotiations on a one-at-time snails pace (which would assure that meaningful corrections to correct tariff imbalances would, in effect, never get done.

piles. Wanna reset the supply chain with US being a leader? Don’t enact all the idiotic tariffs at once. Manufacturing plants don’t spring up overnight, it would take decades. If you really wanted to do it, common sense directs you to a graduated approach. Allow US companies to plan and invest in doing so. And that’s only the tip of the first issue. If the dum bass who wrote that POS had greater than a 10 yr old’s understanding of international business and trade, he’d know this.

The stock market will be highly volatile in the short term. It’s easy to pick out a few losers and cite those as proof that the Trump tariff policies are disastrous.
FYI, early after-hours trading in XMAG indicate that the overall market (excluding the ‘Magnificent Seven) is predicting higher stock prices for the weighted average composite price of the S&P’s remaining 493 stocks.
The stock market certainly does not represent how the economy is shaping up for the vast majority of Americans. The Magnificent Seven, while representing the majority of market valuations in the country, could drop dad and yet the overall American economy would be minimally affected.

The broad market is a leading economic indicator, and you may be right about paradigm shift - we may be shifting away from sustained 5 percent (or less) unemployment, an environment of comparative advantage (globally), and a dominant currency. A paradigm shift indeed.

There is wrong and there is...whatever this is.
This whole insane premise is based around the notion that manufacturers can just pack up their gigafactories like camping tents and set them up in Nebraska the day after next.
It takes a minute to do that. Like, years, actually, and billions in investments. Which nobody's going to make because everybody's going to be broke...and, oh, yeah, we're untrustworthy as he!! and deals made with Donald aren't worth the paper they're printed on. And what do we do for stuff in the meantime?

Are companies going to make massive investment decisions that only make sense with the tariffs in tact, knowing they can be reversed at any time. That's one reason tariffs should be set by Congress and not by the POTUS.

They are not just ‘packing up’ giga factores.
The companies are investing new capital in American operations.
Remember Biden didn’t back away from Trump 45 admin’s tariffs.
That history reminds foreign investors that putting money in American operations is a pretty good bet to be safe. I mean, if both Trump and Trump-hating administrations have demonstrated an appetite for tarrifs, then the risk of investing in America is clearly lower than what the ‘tariffs are bad’ people seem to think.

Trump tariffs are achieving the opposite. Trumps are gift to PRC. China will fill the vacuum left by trumps withdrawal from global leadership. Friends & foes already looking elsewhere.
