what kind of animal steals dry, bleached skulls?
I had 2 raccoon skulls on my back porch that I had found walking the back woods of my property, along with a couple deer leg bones and other bones I have just happened upon. These were on a rail where a dog or non-climbing animal couldn't get at. No real reason to have them except that they looked cool.
This weekend, they were gone. Nabbed by something.
Probably too big for birds to fly off with. Squirrels? Why would they need a skull? They don't eat bones, I'm almost positive. No stray cats around that I know of. Raccoons? Are they cannibals?
I'm stumped.

It was another animal / human. No other animal would be large enough to take them all except maybe a bear.

Porcupines chew on bone to sharpen teeth. Most animals will eat bone to cure some kind of vitamin deficiency. I see lots of bones chewed on by mice and ground squirrels out here.

Yeah raccoons, squirrels, and chipmunks will chew on them and possibly carry them off for the calcium
We had a cowskull, very nice with big horns, hanging as a decoration on the back porch and fuggers knawed it up until I finally threw it in the woods

I have a pile of found skulls beside the driveway, deer, fox, raccoon, coyote, etc. Anything I find in the woods goes in that pile and the squirrels will try and drag them off, even some of the larger deer skulls. I've even watched a pair of squirrels work together to try and drag off a fairly large deer skull with antlers still on it. I'll routinely find the smaller animal skulls from the pile around the yard where squirrels have dragged them off. I'm not sure why, but they seem to like playing with them for sure.

I tell you what, nothing is as terrifying as a group of aggressive rodents empowered by the use of simple machines. Their sense of teamwork is incredible.
Don't even get me started on the assembly line practices of capybaras.
