Actually, until the University of South Carolina has a record in football that is equal to University of Southern California, then Southern Cal is everybody's "USC," including Spurrier's "USC." Spurrier can say what he wants, and it can be interpreted for what it is. Let's be real. res ipsa loquitur.
Southern Cal has 11 football NATIONAL championships. South Carolina has 1 division championship (SEC east 2010), 1 ACC conference championship (1969), and ZERO national championships. South Carolina has a LONG way to go. 18 bowls, 6-12.
"The Trojans are a football powerhouse, and have been throughout NCAA history, claiming 11 national championships.[1] As of 2013, 480 Trojans have been taken in the NFL Draft, more than from any other university." 49 bowls, 33-16, the highest bowl winning %age in the NCAA. I think the point is that Spurrier can say all kinds of things, many of which are irrelevant or untrue. Facts matter and tell us whether you are credible or full of nonsense. Dabo is on the right path. I welcome your suggestions if you disagree.

He can ... but why does he feel he has to?
Aug 16, 2013, 9:28 PM
[ in reply to 4 straight... he can say what he wants ] |

People forget that the "coaching genius" Spurrier started out a miserable 1-3 against Clemson ... now Dabo the green rookie HC is 1-4 against SCAR.
Except for the fact that Spurrier is a veteran coach of long tenure and Dabo is still wet behind the ears, the records sound pretty even to me.
In fact, given the overall experience edge, I'd say Dabo has done pretty well.
I really believe Spurrier is concerned that Clemson and Dabo are getting too much positive pre-season hype with Game Day and Heisman talk, etc ... Spurrier doesn't like to be seen as taking a back seat.
Winning 4 in-a-row is certainly an impressive accomplishment.
So impressive that Clemson beat SCAR 4 in-a-row on four separate occasions in the two decades prior to this current streak SCAR is enjoying.
In fact, we so dominated the series, that I don't recall Danny Ford or any of our former coaches even mentioning SCAR. Much less making a habit of trying to needle the HC down there.
The rivalry just wasn't competitive enough to warrant it.
Spurrier is simply doing what Spurrier does ... being an ### clown when he feels he has an advantage.
He'll get his soon enough.

Although I do believe Dabo's rant was staged and well thought out, I believe it was necessary to show his team that he had their back. They were 8-0 that year and the wheels fell off. We went on to take out VT for the ACC Championship. I do hope that Dabo see's the importance of beating them this year. It is almost like the bully coming and taking your lunch money one too many times. I liken the talking by Spurrier to the bully talking about taking your lunch money and smacking your girlfriend on the butt before he walks off.
It is time to stop this madness.

A first or second year coach having a go at a legend....what did you expect to happen? Spurrier is having fun getting our fanbase pumped while getting under your skin.
Im cool with what dabo said, i agree you have to protect what is yours and get your players and fans behind you. But this is what happens when you trash talk a man like Steve Spurrier.
And truth be told it is all an act by both coaches. It has brought national attention to our rivalry which is great for all involved

When this whole thing happened a couple of years ago and it was reported that Spurrier had made those comments on his Twitter account, my first thought was "a 66 year old football coach Tweets?".
It's obvious Spurrier doesn't mind saying things to get people riled up and he said he didn't make that quote. Does anyone really think Spurrier would have any reason to be embarrassed by that rather benign comment.....and then when you consider the fact that he, a 66 year old guy, was supposedly hopping on Twitter immediately after a football game and Tweeting stuff.......I mean really, that's not logical.
Spurrier was well into some Coors Lights after that game and has probably never Tweeted in his life.

Getting under our skin? It's been a year and a half and Spurrier still can't get over the fact that his supposedly inferior, young rival called his sorry ### university out.
Spurrier is LITERALLY (and I mean literaly literally, not figuratively "to make a point" literally) acting like a little 12 year old girl about this whole thing. Maybe 11 year old. I don't know - I'm not Columbo.

Nobody EVER started "a war of words" w/Spurrier.....
Aug 16, 2013, 7:08 PM
[ in reply to dabo started this war of words ] |
|
The vast majority of head coaches try to maintain a modicum of professionalism in their dealings with other coaches and programs.....Spurrier has always been an exception.
He gets away with it because he wins--and after 6 or 7 years of "gray-shirting" and "roster adjustment", he's finally starting to win even at chickentech. It should be noted he seldom had little quips about the opposition while he was in the pro's--because he couldn't hang with best coaching talent in the country.
But short of Clemson beginning ANOTHER 4 game win streak against the chickens, Spurrier will continue trying to stir things up. Coach Swinney and all Clemson fans would be wise to simply ignore him.

Spurrier only does this when he is very confident, and truly believes that the target of his jabs, barbs, or whatever can't beat him. Not saying he's right, just what he believes.

I really don't understand how this is taking a jab at Dabo? He thinks he is, but really all he's doing is reminding everyone that both of names South Carolina fans like to call themselves refer to other universities. They are irrelevant. Spurrier is actually calling out USCe by continuing to point this out!
Notice how he doesn't argue the FACTS of what Dabo said, he just refers to it as "Dabo's USC and Dabo's Carolina." FACT is, it's the entire country's USC and Carolina. Trust me, if Spurrier had a leg to stand, he would argue that they are the real Carolina and the real USC, but even his old ### isn't this stupid!
Thanks Spurrier for continuing to point out your university's irrelevancy! We all appreciate it, as USCjr fan's are getting a little out of hand. Nothing like their head coach putting them back in their rightful place!

me because they continue to show just how thin-skinned our fanbase and Dabo is. He says these things to get under our skin and, you know what? It works. And it's stupid. It's a rivalry, that's all. Stevie the stalker

I think Dabo should have the old geezer arrested for stalking. It's starting to seem like old Stevie can't get Dabo off his mind, you know, sort of like a teenage school boy crush.

Why do we indulge him by giving him press??

Ignore him. Eventually he will go away. I don't give rat's tail what he things. Could NOT care less. I just can't wait for my Tigers to take the field and kick some Dawgs around. Let the boys settle it on the field and let the old man be ignored.

Spurrier has always "run off at the mouth" with little sound bits that the media love so much.
His fans love that he pokes fun at us.
It makes no difference in the outcome of a game.
It's all bs.

I think your right that Gamecock fans think about Clemson more than any other opposing team and Dabo more than any other coach. But as this board clearly demonstrates, Clemson fans are just as obsessed with South Carolina and driven nuts by Spurrier. We're rivals; that's why it is so much fun.

Dabo gave Spurrier all the ammo he needed with his contrived rant. Since Spurrier has won 4 in a row he has bragging rights and we have to put up with it. If we can ever reassert ourselves, then Spurrier's comments will sound pathetic. Unfortunately now he is dealing from a position of strength.

I hate even seeing that Dabo video embedded...I like Dabo a lot, but I always get embarrassed when I think of that little rant.

It is about winning to spurrier. It is a mind game. He knows that wanting to beat someone too badly can actually be a detriment to how you coach or play. He wants to get on clemsons nerves in the hope that they put too much pressure on themselves to win the game.

you're right, unfortunately...and I think that has been the case for the past two years..especially last year. Clemson should have won last year without question in my opinion but Spurrier won the mind game of the coaches and it reflected in how we played.

The guy is a jerk , period. If he were an average joe at a bar running his yap like that he would get a fat lip , and then thrown out the door and into the street ...facedown. Where he would promptly be urinated on by Mangus. I would like to see that .

HBC smack talk

Undisputable facts to take from this....
1. S. Carolina HAS beaten us four straight. 2. Carolina IS in Chapel Hill. 3. USC IS most definitely in southern California. 4. Spurrier is a great coach but a LOUSY sportsman. It's just who he is. 5. Dabo will always be enthusiatic and defend his team no matter who badmouths them. That's just who HE is. 6. This is GREAT entertainment.
Just wish Dabo would ignore the ole HBC, but its hard to as much as he runs his trap. Don't think that will ever change.
