Speaking of Bear Bryant and Coach Howard, here is a story

ya'll might appreciate. Apparently (as the story goes) Coach Bryant visited Frank Howard's office and noticed an orange phone on his desk.
Bear Bryant asked Coach Howard "Who do you call with that orange phone?"
Coach Howard responded "God".
Bear laughed and said, "Really? How much do those calls cost?"
Coach Howard said "They're free. They're local calls."
Thus the phrase "God's country" was born. Took this picture last weekend in Tigertown, btw.

When I was a student in the early 90's I walked up to CFH at a Bball game and introduced myself to him.
He was friends with my grandfather but he had not talked to him in years. My grandfather had passed away the year before but CFH, not knowing that, asked me to tell him hello. When I let him know he had passed his response was, "Well I guess I'm a little late then".

In 1975 the Tigers were terrible. 2-9. The last home game was against Maryland, who had dominated the ACC for a couple of years. Some organization had a barbecue chicken dinner near Jervey Meadows before the game that day as a fund raiser and Coach Howard was walking around talking with everybody and someone said, “Hey coach, what do you think of the Tigers’ chances today?” He thought about it for a few seconds and in that gravelly Alabama drawl he said, “Well I tell you son, I don’t like ‘em.” First, and maybe the only time I was ever around the Coach in person.

Bryant replied, "If I had your team, we'd be national champions!"
