Perhaps Brad interviewing elsewhere? Nice guy but seems uninterested in prep for show. John is very good - maybe best after the regulars?

Hard time slot though. Mickey already covered morning news and overnight happenings. Not enough time for anything else to break and seems like most breaking stuff happens around noon Seems like they struggle to fill up 3 hrs And so silly. And the screaming at one another ugh

Press box wasnt my favorite show but I usually enjoyed it fine. Not much a fan of Fax yet.. he talks NBA a lot which is going to get a lot of dead air response around here.. but he is young, he could grow into it. We will see.. but im turning the radio off anytime someone pivots to NBA talk.

But he does like to ramble with his opinions for long periods of time without taking a breath or taking callers. It can be exhausting to listen to him for long periods of time.
Brad was on the other extreme, probably too laid back. No research and too much golf. Won’t miss much about that show.

Is it frowned upon at the Flagship station of Clemson to actually go out and do a search and maybe bring in some decent talent for Clemson radio. It’s like the only requirement is you must be a former daily caller and live within 2 miles of the station. Was kinda hoping another station would outbid WCCP for the Flagship station and possibly change some things up

It's weird too because Ben is middle management. You know he was 100% plugged in to what was going on behind the scenes I imagine changing shows isn't quite as simple as plugging in a new guy, so this has probably been in the works for a little while, and Ben seemed to be just humming along like nothing was happening at all.

WCCP prides themselves of bring local content all day. IMO, thats the problem.........I love Clemson athletics but how can you talk about it 5 days a week ALL DAY LONG? It just gets stale and then you have the same 7 callers who call daily to every show.
IMO, they should add a couple of national shows like a Dan Patrick, Cowherd, etc. Just a few hours each day to mix things up a little

Yeah, it's great during the fall and then I also enjoy the baseball coverage in the late spring as they're ramping up for conference tournaments and regionals, but besides that it's hard to listen to at times.

And have a show dedicated, not a long one like 1 hour a day, to actually breaking down the non-football, baseball or basketball sports at Clemson.
Soccer game analysis, volleyball discussion, tennis, track, gymnastics etc. and it doesn’t always have to be rosy, critique those programs if need be sometimes.
Listeners will grow to care more about those sports if they are aware of them and know more of the details.
Beats the same talking points about football all day long with the same 5-10 caller perspectives.

One person will say a host is unlistenable and somebody else will reply that they are the next Vin Scully.
With that being said, I agree. I don't need national hosts on WCCP during the day. I can tune into a million other outlets to hear that but they are the sole Clemson outlet I can listen to constantly. I'm glad they have embraced that model at least.

very strange situation
Aug 8, 2024, 12:03 AM
|
|
Typically, when there's a mutual planned departure from a radio or tv show, the host will announce it at least a week or so in advance, often times much earlier than that, even. He'll usually tell the audience what his future plans are and announce what the replacement show will be. Even on shorter notice, there's usually at least some form of closure.
I'll admit, I wasn't much of a fan of Brad's show, mainly because he was a slow, dull talker who I just found very boring to listen to. He was super wishy-washy as well; he almost never gave any strong takes or predictions on anything, and he didn't seem to offer any unique analysis or insights into the sports he covered. He didn't seem to be well informed, either; he just sounded like a casual fan lazily going over the most generic talking points about Clemson football, the Braves, and the PGA, with some occasional Clemson basketball and baseball talk mixed in.
While Qualk and Walt can sometimes annoy people because of how confident and emotional they tend to be, they do at least take some strong, original stances on the issues and they some offer thought-provoking takes that go beyond just generic talking points. They're also willing to make some bold predictions. Even when they're wrong or when they act goofy it's usually still entertaining at least. All of that combined generally tends to make their shows interesting, in my opinion.
If you have someone of Brad's type put together with a more exciting guy, it can actually work ok. For example, I actually think Qualk and Ben are a good fit together because they are foils for each other. Qualk is the chaotic emotional guy and Ben is the more measured, careful, rational one. Having these 2 different personality types together on a show gives it a balance and a natural back-and-forth that offers multiple perspectives: keeping the show from becoming too chaotic or too boring, and keeping it interesting and entertaining for the audience. But when Brad and Ben were paired together, I found the show to be almost unlistenable. Hours and hours of PGA talk coupled with half-hearted, generic Clemson football discussion that offered few if any original or thought-provoking insights. There was no excitement to be found; it was painfully boring and useless. John at least brings a bit more energy, but all he really seems to offer is dry sarcasm still without much actual substance.
All that being said, I have nothing against Brad. He might not have been my cup of tea, but seemed like a nice guy, and he's a long-time host at the station, so I respect him for that at least. So it does concern me seeing how he seemingly just disappeared from the lineup with no announcement like that. As someone pointed out, on his most recent show, there was no mention at all that he'd even be gone, and he even seemed to indicate they'd be back Monday. A termination made that quickly and with no notice at all given is usually not a good sign. Neither is the complete silence from Brad and the rest of the station on the topic. These are usually signs that something bad happened.
But unless/until further information comes to light, we can only speculate. I do find it interesting that this happened right when WCCP got extended as Clemson's flagship station. Coincidence? Perhaps this was a natural time for some adjustments to be made. Maybe ad sales from Brad's time slot weren't performing well and station management approached him about a mutual departure at a later date or about moving to a different time slot knowing that the more engaging and energetic Faxon Childress was waiting in the wings to replace him either way? Maybe Brad was angered by this and decided to quit on the spot? That might explain the sudden disappearance.
The only other possibility I can think of would be if Brad had said or done something very bad while at work or out in public, or if it had come to light that he had committed some type of crime. I guess the other explanation might be that there was some type of feud or heated disagreement within the station going back long before this that had been kept behind closed doors. I certainly hope it wasn't something like that. In any case, as I said, while I may not have found him entertaining, I truly have nothing against Brad, and I wish him all the best and really hope he's ok. But this is a bizarre situation, and I hope at some point we can find out what actually happened. On the other hand, if they just fired him with no notice like that for no reason other than underperformance, that would be a really slimy move by the station.

Same feelings about Brad as a host at times but don’t wish any I’ll upon him.
I really hope it isn’t the latter part of your post but the way it all happened doesn’t lead me to believe it was a nice mutual parting of ways. Maybe they think that not enough people care or will notice to even mention it, which would say a lot more about the stations reach than anything else.
