Heard someone say they thought Auburn would win...

Dec 25, 2013, 5:42 PM

Not because of their athletic and confusing offense or the fact that they're apparently touched by the hand of God (see their wins over Georgia and Alabama), but because, like everyone knows, SEC teams just have bigger offensive and defensive lines than "Atlantic conference teams." Only trouble is, FSU's OL averages a monstrous 316 lbs, while Auburn's DL is an average of more then 50 lbs smaller. FSU's DL also averages the same size as Auburn's DL. It's like these people don't even bother to check the facts before they say this stuff.

Florida has a top 5 defense and Auburn does not. They had no problem with Florida at all. Auburn's "defense" is not going to be able to slow FSU down.

I made the mistake of engaging an Auburn fan yesterday

Dec 25, 2013, 7:04 PM

in a discussion about the game. (I forgot he was an Auburn fan until I'd already said I thought FSU was going to cakewalk through that game.) He seems to think that Jameis Winston is going to crumple and wither at the first sign of "real" pressure, and that Auburn will win a shootout. All I could do was smile and shake my head. The fact that FSU hadn't scored *less* than 40 points to anyone but Florida this year was apparently due to FSU "not playing anyone except Clemson".

You just can't argue with delusion. It's a no-win situation.

Dec 25, 2013, 8:03 PM

As long as the TO margin is close. FSU has one of the best defenses in the country and have had ample time to prepare for those 5 or 6 different plays Auburn runs. Nobody in the country has a scheme to stop kelvin Benjamin if Jameis throws him a perfect ball.

I replied that Auburn is a hard team to beat if you only have a week to prepare, but with a month to prepare, FSU will beat them. No one tried to argue with me.

Re: Heard someone say they thought Auburn would win...

Dec 25, 2013, 10:55 PM

Last time I checked FSU averaged like 290 across the board on the DL with very few outliers. It seems like everyone on their two deep is between 280-310. If it comes down to just pure size of the lines FSU has the advantage, despite what some idiot SEC homers have to say.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

FSU averages 302 on the DL

Dec 25, 2013, 11:03 PM

Which is freaking huge. Usually OLs will outweigh DLs by a good bit because just about everybody on the line is over 300 lbs. But Auburn's OL averages the same weight as FSUs DL: 302 lbs.

Who wants to bet that ESPN won't make how much bigger and faster FSU is than Auburn part of their talking points for the game?

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: FSU averages 302 on the DL

Dec 25, 2013, 11:16 PM

Why would they? Their main talking point is "SEC speed" and "SEC defense" and everything else related to their perfect conference. If anyone found out FSU is bigger and faster on both lines and their defense is better, someone will have a heart attack at ESPN.

And thank you for the stat. I remember seeing their team on tv and doing the math to see what the average size of their lines were but I couldn't remember the exact number. 6'4" 310 lbs. across the offensive line two deep and 6'2.5" and 302 lbs. on defense. That's scary.

Re: Heard someone say they thought Auburn would win...

Dec 25, 2013, 10:59 PM

What will the excuse be if/when FSU wins? Will they resort to the "Auburn was beat up from playing so many tough teams?" Because that's a lie. Any time you have over a month between games the only players that shouldn't be back and healthy are the ones that have serious injuries.

slow start in bowl games after the long lay off. The time off kills there timing on the read option.... Auburn basically runs the veer from the shotgun.... FSU has a enough speed on the edge and talent up front to shut them down....

Bama should have beaten them by 14+ missed three short field goals and a 4th and one inside the 15...... Auburn runs out of there lucky charms against FSU.........

I grew up with a kid who played soccer and football his whole life. He got an offer from Alabama but decided he wanted to do medical school instead. His average was in the 45+ yard range with 1 63 yard field goal. He was good. Its weird thinking he could've been the guy that won the Iron Bowl this year...

FSU is built in the same mold as Alabama, and Auburn builds its team around beating Bama

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Heard someone say they thought Auburn would win...

Dec 26, 2013, 2:21 AM

Yup and Alabama is built upon the models set by much more successful programs like the USC Trojans, Michigan, and Notre Dame. You're argument is pointless, they are built to win, not built in the likeness of your SEC jerk fest.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sorry, but I have to respectfully disagree with you here

Dec 26, 2013, 2:26 AM [ in reply to Re: Heard someone say they thought Auburn would win... ]

2013 Alabama Crimson Tide:

Base Offense - Two Back/Pro Style
Base Defense - 3-4

Top Passer - AJ McAaron, 207-306 for 2676 yards
Top Rusher - TJ Yeldon, 190 carries for 1163 yards
Second Rusher - Kenyan Drake, 92 carries for 694 yards
Top Receiver - Amari Cooper, 36 receptions for 615 yards

2013 Florida State Seminoles:

Base Offense - Multiple
Base Defense - 4-3

Top Passer - Jameis Winston, 237-349 for 3820 yards
Top Rusher - Devonta Freeman, 162 carries for 942 yards
Second Rusher - Karlos Williams, 86 carries for 705 yards
Top Receiver - Rashad Greene, 67 receptions for 981 yards

-------------------------------------------------------

So, what does all of this mean?

First of all, both teams run completely different offenses. Alabama runs a two back, pro style offense. This essentially means that they rely heavily on their run game and occasionally go to the play action pass. Florida State runs a multiple sytle, which means that they generally balance the run and the pass as much as possible. Thus, their base offenses do not have the same mold.

Notice that Alabama has way more attempts and yards on TJ Yeldon than on their second back. Florida State, meanwhile, seems to split things a bit more evenly. This is because Alabama generally uses an every down back, while Florida State does things a bit closer to a running-back-by-committee approach. Thus, their running games do not have the same mold.

Notice also that Florida State's QB passed the ball quite a bit more than Alabama's QB. Also notice that their top receiver has more receptions and more yardage than Alabama's top receiver. This means that they pass the ball quite a bit more and also tend to rely on their passing game much more often than Alabama. Thus, their passing games do not have the same mold.

Finally, notice the base defenses. Florida State runs a 4-3 defense while Alabama runs a 3-4 package. This means that Florida State relies more on blitzes, pressures, and tight man-to-man coverage to stop their opponents. Florida State is more likely to bring a blitz at any given time during the game. This requires physical defensive backs and very strong linebackers. Alabama runs a 3-4, which means they rely more on zone coverage. This means dopping as many as 8 or 9 into coverage on each and every play, with few blitzes thrown in. To get pressure, they rely on their defensive line and try to cover the recievers long enough for the pressure to get there. This requires very athletic and fast defensive backs and linebackers. Thus, their base defenses do not have the same mold.

So, in other words, while Florida State and Alabama may have some similarities, the makeup of their teams is completely different. While we're on the same subject, Alabama missed 3 field goals during their game with Auburn, and even then Auburn still had to return the final field goal attempt just to win, correct? If Auburn is built to stop Alabama but needed a miracle to do so, then why does this mean they will stop a Florida State team that is nothing like Alabama? Not trying to say they won't beat Florida State, I'm just saying that the "built to stop Alabama" aurguement won't have any sort of justification in this case.
