TNET: Clemson Recruiting: Why Dabo Swinney extends fewer offers than everyone else

Clemson Recruiting: Why Dabo Swinney extends fewer offers than everyone else

If you see a pretty girl walking down the street, you don’t wave and ask her to marry you right away. Why? Because you have no idea what you’re getting yourself into. It’s the same thing with recruiting, according to Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney. Full Story »

Dabo has built something truly special and unique

These kinds of stories are always amazing and demonstrate just how differently Clemson runs things.

Yet another reason-

Why he manages a highly successful program. From his staff to the players, he has a plan, he works it and most importantly, the plan works.

Fewer than everyone else?

Dec 20, 2018, 1:03 PM

How about fewer than MOST. Stanford extended 72 offers, Washington 91.......

Now if you are talking about Clemson offering fewer than all SEC schools. Yes!

No need to exaggerate to make a point. Just get your facts straight or smart people will stop believing all of your boast.

Re: Fewer than everyone else?

Dec 20, 2018, 3:11 PM

I'm sure I'll get blasted for this, but people do tend to use a bit of hyperbole here and there. I'm not saying you're wrong, because you are absolutely right. But take the coaches words for example: "we don't take grad transfers." We took the quarterback from Stanford a few years ago. Maybe he wasn't a "one off" player per se, but we did take him.

Just sayin'

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: i never use hyperbole!

Dec 20, 2018, 5:39 PM

If commentators can use hyperbole when they are supposed to be impartial, fans can certainly use it--at times.

It's only you Engineering types who believe that words have specific meanings, and words of quantification imply a specific value. I mean, who else does that?

If Herbie, one of the top 3 commentators in the business, says that TE is one of the top 5 RBs in the country, do you immediately demand: "name the only 4 who are better, please; otherwise, you're exaggerating"?

Fact-based conversations are great, and i learn a lot from you guys that offer some. But hyperbole is the prerogative of a fan, just as much as disrespect (unfortunately) is the coin of the realm. It feeds the fury of 40K of those really loud Tiger fans in DV on Saturdays. Remove the hyperbole, and DV becomes just another stadium.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: i never use hyperbole!

Dec 21, 2018, 10:10 AM

Yep, you said it better than I did. I agree, and I think many things would be rather bland including the stadium. I like the fact that life is filled with both facts and fluff.

My hope is that people remember it is possible for the And in life. It doesn't always have to be either/or. You can survive and even enjoy both.

Extremes are for politics and Sith.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The headline is not accurate, plain and simple.

Dec 21, 2018, 11:19 AM [ in reply to Re: Fewer than everyone else? ]

It's close to accurate, but apparently there are other programs that make fewer offers. This really isn't rocket science, nothing's going to blow up but what's wrong with being accurate?

Saw the number of offers yesterday among the P5 then I saw this headline. It’s just a blatant lie and it wasn’t necessary.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: +1

Dec 21, 2018, 7:52 AM

Not a blatant lie! That's a coot comment for sure! Look at the recruiting competition in the SE region where Clemson recruits vs the recruiting region Washington is in!! Then look at the number of recruits we took (27)+ still counting in comparison to Stanford or Washington or whoever.

Now look at schools in our region and they offer 400-500+ recruits because competition is elevated substantially. But not only is it regional schools but liik at Oregon, USC, OSU, ND, OK, aTm, etc! They are all coming to the Clemson main recruiting region trying to cherry pick!

So take your "Blatant lie" commentary and shove it up your bloody nose because Dabo gets a majority of his main targets if he wants them.

How about 'everyone else we care about'?

Re: TNET: Clemson Recruiting: Why Dabo Swinney extends fewer offers than everyone else

Dec 20, 2018, 1:33 PM

I agree 100% with Dabo's philosophy. I could care less if our recruiting class is mostly 4 or 5 stars like Alabama. I could care less if ESPN ranks our recruiting class #7. I do care about players that have the right mindset (level headed), have potential to be great or elite (if they aren't already) and are dedicated to the coaches and team. We are in great shape for the future beyond just this year! GO TIGERS!!!

As far as asking the pretty girl walking down the street to marry you, it depends on just how pretty. I'm not beneath asking her to marry me if she's hot enough.

Here I was thinking I was a first rate comedian and it turns out I suck. I was just making a joke and apparently a very bad one.

Hey, I went to the University of Texas and grew up in that area, so I'm a huge Longhorn fan. But, my middle daughter married a guy from Greenville, SC and lives over there now. I go there fairly frequently and fell in love with the area and I'm a huge fan of Dabo. That's why I'm here. Texas 1A and Clemson 1B
Since I am a Texas fan, I will say that Mack Brown was all into hit rates in recruiting. I always hated that because to me it meant he was scared to take a chance on out of state blue chip recruits and only went after those he knew for certain he could land. Hit rate is a little overrated in my book as Mack took Texas to the glory land and then to then down again. I don't care how many kids they offer, just land some great ones.

you don't suck at it. Sometimes it's hard to tell on a message board or in a text/email until you get to know someone. I like Texas and Coach Herman. Maybe one day we'll play you all.

Re: TNET: Clemson Recruiting: Why Dabo Swinney extends fewer offers than everyone else

Dec 21, 2018, 11:30 AM

I'm pretty sure Texas and Clemson have never played, at least not in my lifetime. Right now, it would be a Clemson beat down of Texas. I think Herman has us going in the right direction, but Texas fans are not very patient.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Slightly different. Mack was scared to offer and get a "no,"

Dec 21, 2018, 7:13 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Clemson Recruiting: Why Dabo Swinney extends fewer offers than everyone else ]

Dabo is afraid of offering and getting a 'yes' from someone who doesn't fit Clemson's culture.

Stanford and UCLA have given out the least amount of offers. Clemson is in about the middle of the pack as far as number of offers given out

Someone posted yesterday.....

Dec 20, 2018, 7:23 PM

.......that an offer from Clemson is the Holy Grail.....couldn't be more true....A top 5 football school, a top 20 public university, for an out of state student about a $200-250K prize....

That's why Stanford can get away with only 72.....a full 4-year scholarship to Stanford is worth about half a million plus a top flight degree....they can be picky too.....

Re: Someone posted yesterday.....

Dec 20, 2018, 7:49 PM

Spot on my friend! David Shaw as did Dabo has taken the “perceived negatives “ of their respective schools and turned them into treasures. One reason they’re such good friends is they’ve both learned from each other and modeled their programs respectively.

Dabo is blessed with the ability to be a quick study. Has surrounded himself with winners in life and football. Both keep it ??.

I heard two coot recruits claim the reason they turned down Miami and another acc school is because of u5c’s strength of schedule. Said to be the best, have to play the best. We don’t want that recruit- because as Dabo says, we don’t play to the opponent, we play to Clemson!

Personally, I’d love to drop the coots from our schedule and pick up a permanent home and home against Stanford.

Re: TNET: Clemson Recruiting: Why Dabo Swinney extends fewer offers than everyone else

Dec 22, 2018, 12:16 AM

The only issue I had was his comment on guys coming in on unofficial visits. What if the family can't afford to come to Clemson on an unofficial? That doesn't mean the kid doesn't want to go to Clemson. It doesn't mean he won't be a great ambassador for the school. But if I'm reading that correctly if he doesn't come in for an unofficial then we don't want him.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Clemson Recruiting: Why Dabo Swinney extends fewer offers than everyone else

Dec 23, 2018, 12:13 PM

What he is saying is if the kid doesn’t want to come here on his own then he doesn’t really want Clemson. That’s what he’s saying. If a kid only wants to take an official then he’s there for other things. If a kid truly wants to come to Clemson he will venture there on his own.
