It surprises me that the NFL has such a bad overtime rule.

I'm not an NFL guy, so take this with a grade of slaw, but it feels anti-climactic. Why would both teams not get a shot at scoring a TD?

Agree. I like the idea of an extra quarter of time...

Feb 6, 2017, 7:06 AM

Not sudden death. I think college should do an extra quarter too.

I think college got it right, but an extra quarter would be

Feb 6, 2017, 7:10 AM

much better than what the NFL has now, with some scores being sudden death, while others require the game to continue.

The defense just has to keep the team from getting a TD

Feb 6, 2017, 8:04 AM

and they get a shot to win or tie. College is a little hokey getting the ball in field goal range.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly my point. Some scores are sudden death, others are

Feb 6, 2017, 8:14 AM

not. I'm not sure why both teams don't get the same opportunity. Clear advantage to the winner of the coin flip. Should such an advantage be left to the flip of a coin?

Are you Sirius? This seems Sirius. I don't know that it

Matters during the regular season but for the Super Bowl it does seem to be odd. I guess the rules are the rules. But who didn't think that NE wins if they win the coin toss. Had the momentum. I'm sure others have thought this but NE had run 70 something offensive plays I think and Atlanta was still in the 40s. I think atlantas defefense was more tired. Especially since ne's defense took the second quarter off

Yes, serious. Again, I'm not an NFL fan, but I would have

rather seen the two teams trade punches in OT.

The overtime system and the pass interference spot-of-foul penalty (making a 60-yard penalty possible based on the judgment of a referee) are the two things that make the NFL virtually unwatchable for me. Every time I get mildly interested, one of those things happens and my outrage drives me away again.

By far the most uncompetitive way to end a game

Feb 6, 2017, 8:17 AM

The NFL needs to look in the mirror on that dumba$$ rule and find something new.

NFL overtime process is far inferior to the NCAA's idea .
Neither are perfect , but the NCAA version seems like a better option considering that both teams have equal chances to begin overtime.

I'm sure you'd be OK with the NFL overtime rule if you

At first glance, it seems horribly unfair. But, in the end, a team still has to get a defensive stop to win the game. And by continuing the "sudden death" in the case of a field goal, they are rewarded for their stop. I can see both sides of the argument, though.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So you are saying its unfair

Feb 6, 2017, 11:07 AM

Cuz the Pats didnt get a chance to get a defensive stop right??

At that point in the game, both defenses are gassed. Whoever wins the coin toss has a decisive advantage. I can't image how pised I would be if Clemson lost in that manner.
