LJD Could Be The Smart Guy Jumping Ship With this Offense

With a QB that's a statue with accuracy problems and inability to make plays compounded with an O-line that is fair at best, LJD may be getting the heck out of Dodge at the right time. Unless this offense improves quickly, it's going to be a rough year.
LJD is good enough to go to a program and have a real chance to prosper.
This isn't like the Kelly Bryant sitution.

This is the Kelly Bryant issue all over...

...again but with a twist. KB couldn't handle being passed by TL on the depth chart. So he pouted for a day or two and left. LJD can't handle being passed by Shipley/Pace on the depth chart. But to compound it, LJD was apparently much more of a sore loser and expediated his exit without a "good recommendation" from his former head coach to boot. Very different from the positive remarks from Dabo for KB when he left us in a bit of a lurch. That is very telling in my opinion.

This is not Kelly Bryant. Bryant got his opportunity and proved himself not to be the best QB on the team. Lyn-J sat patiently behind Etienne for 3 years and waited for his opportunity and never got it. We failed the kid plain and simple and I personally would be HEATED not only if I was a player in that situation but a parent of the player. There was no indication that this kid was a troublemaker or a "diva" like some are trying to seem to make him out to be. He deserved a chance to be "the guy" and that was taken away from him.

I have no complaints about a player going where he can play a lot. I always wondered about a good player barely playing during his college career when he could have been a star at a lesser school as far as his position goes.

So what you are saying is that coaches should give playing
Sep 21, 2021, 4:55 AM

time (i.e. opportunity) based on seniority and loyalty?? I totally disagree - playing time should go to the guy who performs the best in practice and does the right things on/off the field.
At some point we have to trust that Dabo actually knows what he is doing and is sending the right message to the whole team with who is getting playing time. Entitlement attitudes will kill team cohesion and if LJD thought he was entitled to anything just because he was in Etienne's shadow for 3 years - that ain't a coaching staff problem - that is a LJD problem.

To think that he did everything right enough to back up Etienne for most of his career and all of sudden when it's his time to take over he's "in the dog house" makes absolutely zero sense.

Sure it does - kids get their attitudes bent out of shape all the time - especially when they think they are being snubbed. Here's the thing - it was never a given or guarantee that this year was "his time to take over". We might have assumed that based on LJD's experience and past performance but that does not mean it will be the reality - especially in a place that recruits at a high level.
Everyday these guys must compete for playing time. In the culture Dabo has established that competition includes on AND off the field performance. When Dabo stated two days ago that LJD needed to "be a team player" that indicated to me LJD got his nose bent out of shape because some of the younger running backs were outperforming him.

No. He was not happy he was not starting and apparently not following team rules. People are so quick to blame the coaches and assume they don’t know what they are doing. Ridiculous.

This may be the Clemson version of a “rough year”. It is possible CU will lose maybe two or 3 games! And there is no way they go to the playoffs. But I think the idea is to stick with the guys we’re playing and help them improve every week. Then next year we’ll be right back on top.

I agree and disagree. I do think that this is the best move for Lyn-J. Even if our offense was clicking on all cylinders and he was our "featured back", I don't think that he gets enough carries to make a real bid for the next level. With the offense struggling, it makes it even more unlikely and that is if he was the main guy.
I haven't heard what the problem was between Lyn-J and the coaching staff, so kudos to Lyn-J, at least to this point, for keeping things in house. After being called out publicly, he certainly could have decided to air his laundry for everyone to see. I hope that Dabo's comments were a miscalculation, thinking that Dixon would react differently, and not said in a moment of frustration. If it was not a miscalculation, then I hope that Dabo uses it as an experience for growth.
I do think that Lyn-J has the talent. After all, he is 2nd behind Etienne in YPC at Clemson. I hope that he will iron out his differences and leave on good terms with the coaching staff.
As for the offense, we do play in the ACC which stinks worse than usual this year. We also have one of OUR better defenses, which is saying something. We need to improve, but it doesn't necessarily need to be done quickly. I think that we have the pieces, and I even believe that our OL will be above average by the end of the year. As long as we are hitting our stride by November 27th, I think everything will be alright.
