So, the floor for the Clemson job has been established

Jun 7, 2015, 2:34 PM

It's Super Regional+ or bust. That might be a hard sell. I watched Texas A&M struggle to get out of their regional against Cal. They had an awesome season, but baseball is game of momentum. If they didn't make it out of the regional, would they have had a bad season, even after setting program records in several categories?

I think it's going to be a hard sell to land a truly elite baseball name. Hope D-Rad packs his checkbook.

Advancing to the Super Regional may have saved JL's job this year, but not advancing this year is not why he was not retained.

So, what's the floor then?

Jun 7, 2015, 3:18 PM

What are the minimum expectations for the Clemson team on a yearly basis? What are the expectations over a 5 year period?

Re: So, what's the floor then?

Jun 7, 2015, 3:28 PM

I think realistically making the cws at least 1 to 2 times in 5 years, hosting a super the same, making regional every year, and hosting 3 to 4 Years out of 5.

the minimum expectations are don't give the AD smack

So the new coach should not expect control over his staff?

That's probably not a great selling point.

Tourney and host more often than not, be a factor in the conference race, I.e. win it more than once per decade. This level of expectation was not being met.

There are 9 teams in college baseball from a power 5 conference with 40+ wins. You are asking Clemson to be in the top 10 on a yearly basis? F.S.U. didn't even crack 40 wins this year.

FSU went 44-21

Jun 7, 2015, 5:06 PM

Fun fact, Mike Martin has never won fewer than 40 games (I actually think its like 43) in any of the 36 seasons he has coached there.

They have the exact same downward trend line everyone used to,justify hating Coach Leggett. It just started slightly above ours and remained there.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I was talking regular season

They were 39-19 in the regular season.

what kind of "bust"? A big one?

Don't panic dude. It will be OK.

Jun 7, 2015, 4:24 PM

Firings are never pleasant or easy. The coach was not blind sided on this. He knew he had to improve, but the program continued it's downward trend.

Many great coaches don't get to leave on their own terms. Bobby Bowden, Tom Landry, etc....... Those programs seemed to weather the storm and so will we.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

By most journalist accounts..

Jun 7, 2015, 4:29 PM

This came as a surprise to Jack Leggett.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't doubt that Leggett was surprised to hear that

Jun 7, 2015, 5:35 PM

he wasn't coming back. It seemed like he'd been in denial on a number of things over the past few years.

It appears that he thought he was getting an extension

Jun 7, 2015, 5:37 PM

and instead got fired. Unless you think he is an idiot and was getting bad information from someone close to the AD, I would call that blindsided.

He would have to be very arrogant to honestly think he had no chance of being let go, and would instead, receive an extension. Can you factually claim any sort of improvement from last season?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The claim was that he wasn't "blindsided"

Jun 7, 2015, 5:51 PM

The facts seem to indicate that he was. I don' t think Jack is an idiot, so I'm assuming he was getting bad information.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't believe that Leggett is an idiot. But I would

Jun 7, 2015, 8:33 PM

believe that he would interpret things differently than your average Joe.

There as many sides to a story as there are participants, and those include not only JL and DR but every journalist, assistant, aide, fan, message boarder what have you.

I hope we make a good hire and I wish Jack the best. He'll make a great hire to bring in for a program working to invest in a step up in the collegiate hierarchy over the next five to ten years.

Sort of. I'd say that if the next coach goes 5 years without

Jun 7, 2015, 4:36 PM

a super regional, he'll be gone too, and I'd probably agree with that.

Jun 7, 2015, 7:04 PM

I think the floor would be HOSTING a regional in a 5 year span.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe the minimum is one win in regionals.

Jun 7, 2015, 7:47 PM

We have not done that in awhile.

Maybe it's an attitude things. JL seemed to turn off a lot of fans, mostly with his attitude.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

fundamental baseball, day in and day out, year in and year out. The lack of this is what made Clemson baseball nearly unwatchable for me this year (and last). We wouldn't even get an inning into a game before the first bonehead play, or just out and out poor individual play would happen, costing us runs. Nobody says you have to be absolutely perfect, but you should not be consistently, fundamentally unsound either.
