BYU vs Colorado in the whatever bowl, both being from the Big 12. Has this happened before outside of playoff games? Or is this a result of all the new crazy conference realignment?

Not to my memory. Outside of the Bama LSU rematch for the National Championship over a decade ago, I don't think it's happened since pre-BCS era. Even then, I couldn't confirm if that happened without deeper research.

Announcers just said it's the 3rd time ever. So it is very rare.

This is what the SEC needs to do. Create their own National Championship and play each other in their own playoff/bowls games. This way they will get all of their teams into the games they want and they can always win a national championship. No more Ole Miss and Bama crying about missing out.

Dear tigerpaws®

Please contact my Director of Human Resources first thing on Monday morning.

No no … don’t worry about passing the drug test. The interview is just a formality, and besides we have a young intern interned (yuk yuk) whose job it is to urinate clean fluid, at least that’s one of his jobs.

Oh yes, the job. You’re the Director of SECtragetigic Marketing for our ESPN Media Group.

Best regards,

Used to happen fairly often.

Mainly with 2 SEC teams playing each other. Way back, probably before you were born, the bowls didn't pay that much money and they were considered a reward for a good season. And, back in the 1960s - I don't know when they stopped it - The Big Ten only sent one team to a bowl game, the Rose Bowl. (And, no team could go in back to back years. If a team went to the Rose Bowl, then won the Big Ten the next year, the second place team went.)

Anyway, some of the lesser bowls would have two teams from the same conference playing each other. (Closer to the venue, less expense travelling, etc.)

One of the more controversial times was not when it was SEC teams. It was not long after Orange Bowl had a contract where they invited the Big Twelve conference champion. The other team was an at large team and Big 12 invited the best team they could find.

1979. Nebraska had beaten OU during regular season and was the Big 12 champion. But, due to a strange set of circumstances, the Orange Bowl invited OU setting up a rematch.

Here's a link.

I remember that Oklahoma Nebraska rematch. It was weird having them play again, but it was a great game. Got to watch Billy Sims. He was a great college football player.

I attended the 1969 Gator Bowl where Florida defeated Tennessee 14-13.
