Moms started taking boys to get their haircuts at places other than a real by-god barber.
Real men are built by hearing old Cletus telling dirty jokes to the barber two chairs away and having your neck cleaned off by compressed air at 100psi.

Went about a week before Joonyer's wedding for the pro beard trim when I was still rocking the Covid-era Grizzly Adams look because they were right down the road. The cat that did mine spent an hour on it and was like a Renaissance artist. Turned out magnificent. I'd go back if I still had that much beard but I whacked it down to a manageable goatee since we were starting to have to show back up at the office occasionally.

Also starting to see a rise in the upscale barber salons for men, but if you want old school there still are some. Once those guys retire, I'm pretty sure it will be the end of that era. I haven't needed a barber in maybe 20 years now since I started shaving my head, but I do miss my man Raymond...$5.00 haircuts in a 200-square-foot brick building with one chair. Raymond's Fridge and TV took up more room than his workspace. That building has sat empty now for a decade or more.

the 'Town Center Mall' I don't think. What a stupid concept that was, LOLUTZ. There is a barber shop in the men's clothing store there now that opened a little over a year ago. The store is very similar to MH Frank, but a little smaller, and with a barbershop.

No scissors and heyall no to shampoo and blow dry. No gel, no hair spray! Max time for a cut is 10 mins. Barber should smell like old cigarettes and bad cologne, occasionally grunting or mumbling something about baseball.

big tiddied redhead. Barber, not stylist, she owns the shop and won’t cut women’s hair. I’m pretty sure my boys learned a fair amount of cuss words and details of the female anatomy from her.

as I'm bald on top, and I kept asking for "short", she finally cut it close w/ clippers, "#2 red". Loved it. Did that a few times, bought a better beard trimmer, now I cut every hair on my head with it at home. Mrs No helps out on the neckline in the back. New trimmer does a better job on my beard, great for close haircut. Paid for itself. Well, actually the razor attachment is not great, but I have used in in a rush for a marginal shave.

First of all, masculinity has not declined, rapidly or otherwise. Perhaps it depends on how you define masculinity.
Second of all, if masculinity did decline it wouldn't be because of barbers.
Third of all, this led me to google my neighborhood barber from when I was a kid and that guy's still in business.

If your neck didn’t feel like 2000 degrees F for about 5 seconds from the astringent he slapped on post neck-trim, you weren’t getting the full experience.

The lobby had a bunch of Sports Illustrated and car magazines. The wall at the chair had a Murphy's Law poster and "All I need to know I learned in kindergarten" poster.
I don't recall the year Dan died, I was well in Charleston by then. My dad went to Great Clips a time or two but realized that wasn't his scene. Since my Grandad wasn't around to give him hell about long hair anymore, he just quit getting it cut. Quit shaving too. It seems a lot of my dad's friends did the same thing.

men stopped wearing powdered wigs.
Men like James Monroe. He was a farmer and college dropout who left to join the militia, and opposed the electoral college because it's always been a stupid idea.
Let's bring back powdered wigs, and reclaim our masculinity.

it's moved locations since I was in school, but still there. That's where I go.
Only thing I dislike is that since the Covid spell they now make you get an appointment. I used to like just walking in.
Barber Shop I went to as a kid, an appointment was unheard of. That's the main delineating factor between Barber Shop and Beauty Parlor - having to make an appointment.

Until Frank nicked my dad's neck with a straight razor right after Magic Johnson came out with HIV. Dad thought he was going to die.
We started going to Miss Tina and Miss Beverly at Hair Do's and Don's. They didn't use straight razors.

but my dad instilled to me that a woman needs to be cutting my hair. obviously didn't pick up on the why until around 14 when that barber cape turned into a tent
but 'tis where I learned the art of flirting with the trashy ladies cutting hair, serving beers/food, etc.
the old barber shop had 2 rooms. the front room had these two middle-aged south GA wimmens (not ugly, not hot, just middle of the road). the back room had these two older dudes, one of whom owned the joint.
I asked my dad why we always went to the ladies instead of the guys - he was like, I don't want no dude rubbin and touchin my ears and face and ####.
