SMU thought they needed to bring an extra guy into the box

To start the game and stop our running game
We made them pay through the air
It took them midway into the 2nd quarter to figure they were going to lose, and they had to try and stop us from running with just 5-6 guys in the box
Once they switched from the 1 deep safety look to the 2 deep safety look, they really challenged us to run the ball
Even still we had chances (missed TD to Wesco)
I think our OL really struggled to run block though, but they still created enough opportunities to run and put the game away. Mafah is just a step or half step slow and unable to lower the boom. There were easily 4 plays where a healthy Mafah picks up 15-20 no problem. And the were 2-3 plays where he just needed to put his head down and get back to the LOS, but he ran around and really put us behind the sticks in some critical moments.
I don’t care how good a play caller you are, if you can’t hit the hole and you needlessly put yourself into long 3rd down situations, you are going to have issues

Yeah, but I thought we liked everyone we got? All kidding aside, wish JH and EZ got more touches/experience this year. Running a badly injured Mafah on critical downs was proven to be low percentage.
I keep telling ppl, we have good players in spots, but not enough talented depth like we used to

No point playing a power back who runs away from contact, even it it means running backwards.

We need to stop being so dedicated to "take what the defense gives you" and get back to some of that "take what you want" swagger.

So let's say Texas, with a more athletic defense, plays 2 high safeties, one of them being Mukuba. They mix blitz packages and try to pressure Cade.
What do we do?

Run the ball. Option with slants curls and out routes. Hope they blitz the safety mafah picks up the block on the play action and take the deep shot to wesco or Williams.

What do we do? Run run run and punt.
What should we do? Adapt the passing game. Run some slants. Run those outside stick patterns that were working against SMU. Re-establish Klubnik as a running threat.
Don't abandon what we do well. Don't force feed Mafah up the middle because the book says that's what to do based on how the defense is lined up. It's so predictable, and we are terrible at it.

Running at will on the opponent
If you don’t want to play the game your defensive opponent wants you to play, then you just need to be able to run the ball 5 yards a clip into a defense with 8 guys in the box
If you can do that, then you can play what ever style of football you want.

The pitch to him in the red zone was a real head scratcher...

He didn't have the speed to get to the corner or the healthfulness to take on/run over the SMU defenders. Incredibly poor play call under the circumstances IMO.

But our coaches were thinking three steps ahead: SMU would never expect an injured and slowed Mafah on a sweep with his injured shoulder exposed to the D on that play. SMU was only thinking 1 step ahead which meant they stumbled into defending it.

I just want to eliminate the 4th qtr playbook
Dec 9, 2024, 4:38 PM

whatever the ###### is that calls for wide bubbles and slip screens on 1st and then 2nd and 8 delayed handoffs to be little or no gain that leave us with 3rd and long and then we essentially throw it away with 40 yard go route to the edge. Did it multiple times and its not good. Instead work the ball to our high percentage guys like Brinny on 1st and create plays where Cade can get mobile and/or outside the pocket to either run or pass but design plays not just free for alls.
Running the ball with Mafah when the defensive line has their ears pinned back doesn't work b/c he's not shifty enough to hop step and get between those tackles. He's more of a head of steam guy so he gets bottled up by those big bodies, our lineman and their lineman. That's an Etienne/andre ellington type back. WE don't have that.

Running a hurry up offense with a 17 point lead to start the 4th was clueless coaching. You bleed the clock down before snapping the ball with the lead. Couple that with 3 and outs and you just give the ball back for them to quickly score again. The opposite w/Loserville, behind with time ticking away, we bleed down the clock (duh)….

I disagree. We did run the clock down on several occasions in the 3rd/4th. When we bleed the clock like that, we get out of rhythm and just play poorly. It was too soon to do that, we needed to step on the gas and extend the lead. Especially against a team like SMU that can score so quickly...there was just too much clock to try to run down for an entire quarter.

Exactly correct! We should have continued the same tempo that got us to that point. I do agree that the tempo in the Louisville game was a head scratcher.

Re: I Tell You What.. That SMU Quarterback Was Itching To Run ---

I've never seen a Quarterback quite like him that will literally threaten you to run and pass like he does. He does that little hesitant twitch move with his body with the football loaded and ready to fire .... like threatening you like.. "''if you don't back off ... I'll throw it "' ...and the next thing you this kid will we take off on you or he will sling that ball for chunks of yardage. He was something wicked and going to be entertaining in the coming years.

Sellers prefers to run while this dude prefers to pass. But they are almost identical athletes, with the edge going to Sellers. Sellers made our defense look absolutely hopeless in the 4th qtr.

Of Mafah isn’t ready let David E. and Adam’s carry majority of the load. David looks like he will be a stud given the chance and Adam’s can get the short yards.

Texas is a different kettle of fish or in this case, beef. We have played our best halves of the season the last 2 games and that 20 minute A game will have to be a 40 minute A game against Texas.
