We’ve lost 6 of the 12 scholarship players from last season

And have 3 signees for 2019-2020, so we have 4 scholarships available.
Coach Brownell’s player evaluation, recruiting, and roster management is lacking a strategy to say the least.

HUGE STRATEGY PROBLEM. You don't have to have the best, highest rated players. You have to have a plan and get players to operate in that plan. I haven't seen a plan. I have discussed this before. This just keeps getting worse as players drop.

After last season, I had very high hopes we had turned a corner. Maybe we did, but we saw something we didn't want. It seems like the guys on the team quitting on the program Brad Brownell is trying to run. It seems like total chaos and a huge clusterf--- to me, and I love Basketball. Let's hope BB has a strategy that turns this thing around quickly, because the program is on death's doorstep and struggling for some semblance life, IMO.

WHAT?
We just won 20 games for the second year in a row, finished tied for 8th in the ACC (out of 15 teams), and lost 6 conference games by a combined 11 points. A frustrating season of super close losses it was, but our program isn't in trouble as your dramatic post suggests.

We stick by this guy when he's hurt & pay for his surgery/rehab and as soon as he's good to go, he bails?! Obviously don't know the whole story, but not a good optic IMO. So now another guy who would probably played alot of minutes is gone and we have 2 post players in Baehre & Jemison? Gonna be the Fightin' Pygmies before long...Thanks Brad---

next year. Why leave? Unless they're currently courting other transfers for their positions and its a slap in the face kinda thing.
ITs what i find refreshing about Dabo not going after JuCo guys. It shows the guys on the current roster that they're invested in them and they're not looking for a Plan B.
But this transfer thing in Basketball is getting ridiculous. It happens everywhere but it seems in basketball everyone moves around.

Another reason that Brad Brownell has to go. As it stands now, the team will not have enough players to have a 5 on 5 practice next season.

Brad's main issue is that he coaches basketball at Clemson.
Apr 16, 2019, 2:05 PM
|
|
Worst basketball history in the ACC. Next to last in basketball funding in the ACC. Among the worst in basketball attendance in the ACC.
The new facilities three years ago and the additional staff positions he was granted two years ago have certainly helped, because since then we've won 20 games in back to back seasons, been to a Sweet 16, and have our best recruiting class under Brad coming in this year.
Fans should be encouraged by these things, not acting like we are an ACC cellar dweller (we haven't been close to that under Brownell).

Are we talking about this season or the program as a whole?
Apr 16, 2019, 4:07 PM
|
|
This season was disappointing, but it wasn't awful. We won 20 games and missed the NCAA Tournament by the narrowest of margins. If we had literally had 2-3 plays go differently, we would've finished no worse than 6th in the ACC and been no worse than a 7 seed in the NCAAs.
Obviously there are no moral victories, and winning is what matters, but losing so many heartbreaking games this year (mostly to teams which we weren't supposed to beat) while beating the teams we were supposed to (usually by 10+ points) shouldn't cause so many people here to be so upset about the basketball program.

You do realize that Brad is leaving his own cupboard bare...
Apr 16, 2019, 6:41 PM

which has been stated before except it was OP who supposedly left the cupboard bare for Brad.
This coming season holds little hope for even making the NIT let alone the NCAA, and that is a direct result of how Brad has run the program. Those 3 incoming freshmen are going to have to immediately become impact players, and according to their profiles, they should be, but it appears that Brad has not had an immediate impact freshman come into the program yet. If there is a freshman that Brad has brought in that has averaged 10 points, 8 rebounds or 5 assists as a either a true or redshirt freshman, please remind me. Otherwise, we are looking at minimal impact from players we are going to desperately need according to the trend of the past 9 seasons...

You take that FB Intramural team that everyone is in love with and I bet that they beat our current eligible roster that is returning. I've never seen them play obviously, but sheer athleticism would be enough to overcome talent. Don't know if adding the 3 incoming freshmen would make a huge difference other than Dawes. J-Ross & T-Higgins are probably better than anyone we could dress right now.

The real facts are that a few of the football players could have very well played big time college basketball. It just so happens that their love for football overrides those basketball feelings. To think some of these guys wouldn't straight dog a Skara or a White, you know actually scholarship players on the current basketball team, is hilarious.

probably to some degree but that shipped sailed several years ago. And I don't think any were going to get "Big time offer's". No one on the football team is going to be dogging Skara who was one of the best defenders in the ACC. They would hardly be able to receive a pass. You clearly don't understand the commitment and practice it takes to be a d1 player.

Just flat out , NO.
When will you finish dissing our guys?
Higgins and Ross are world-class athletes who have spent several years developing the ability to use their physical advantages against shorter guys. On the other field.
Last time I checked, Skara and White are not shorter guys. And last time I checked, athleticism doesn't put the ball in the hole. Remember Dominique Wilkins, the Human Highlight Reel, who was incredibly talented at missing shots? If you, me, Skara, anybody can keep Tee more than 6 feet from the basket, he is only slightly above average compared to the general public, and he would be very amateurish compared to an active ACC roster.
In fact, I've seen church league teams that could beat Tee's intramural team if you could keep him away from the rim.
In fact, Skara might just take Tee in hand, since we haven't seen Tee's ability--or willingness--to play defense.
But that's right, defense is boring, and the entire ACC recognizes that Brownell's teams are good at it, so I guess we need to diss that, too.

My goodness..do you have a redi-made list of retorts for absolutely ANY questions regarding our basketball program? I understand that there are many posters that go to the extreme but you seem to go on the other end of the continuum. He, Coach Brownell, and his program isn’t above reasonable questions/concerns, is he? I am not being an unreasonable jerk because I really respect you and your passion for our program but there are issues that warrant some concern, in my opinion.

Namely, funding for our basketball program and dwindling crowds at our games.
We must also figure out a way to address the current environment in college basketball, where top recruits are often paid $$$ by handlers and only have to stay for one year, and all others can transfer on a whim if they don't find their situation perfect.
With that said, I still don't think our basketball team at Clemson would lose to an intramural team at any school. The notion that they would shows a complete lack of knowledge about what goes into being a high major basketball player.

I guess that is why I respect your posts. You are articulate and reasonable. I guess you must feel like you are the lone guard “standing at the gates”in your support of our basketball program. I admit, I am ignorant regarding our funding levels verses other teams and I’ll take you at your word that we are under funded as to be able to break through to the next level. Something has got to give....our guys deserve the best.

that a strategy, good evaluations that put players in their best positions to get the most out of their talents, and good coaching can overcome the lack of administrative support and funding, small crowds and student apathy... she took the same players that Audra Smith absolutely failed with and coached them to an NCAA tournament invite. that's evidence enough that Brownell, as the center of the Clemson basketball universe, is not providing life giving light to the men's team...

You keep on bringing up “ no funding from the administration to the basketball program” 63.5 million dollars is a pretty good amount for a basketball arena/ basketball facilities! Brownell is not the answer! The Clemson basketball program is about the equivalent of the Miami football program minus the historic relevance. If you put a poor product on the field/ court, there is going to be copious amounts of aluminum showing in the stands. It’s not rocket science, in fact it’s simple, Brownell just isn’t that good of a coach and Clemson basketball isn’t that good of a program historically. Do yourself a favor and just watch football if basketball bothers you so much, it saves you from the heartache and advanced aging.

Maybe the school should lower its academic expectations. Maybe make some classes optional. Or get attractive secretaries to teach.
Hey, no grounds for any speculation that Malik's problem with Clemson is the schoolwork. Or the coeds. But if speculation is the fodder of the bored, I'm all in.
Besides, it evidently works for the bluebloods. If beating Louisville, UNCheat and NC St (ok, not much blue in those veins, but they do have a chip) is our highest priority, you can't hang onto silly things like academic integrity.

I haven't seen anyone say that about Malik William. He played sparingly as a freshman and was injured all of this year, so I don't know why anyone would say that.

year. Therefore it is really unrealistic to extrapolate any data as to his potential. Also, its probably save to assume those 4 minutes werent continuous and was a minute here and there, hardly enough time to get in any sort of rhythm. Maybe BB can replace him, but as ive said before, where this hurts him is he is now playing catch up to replace another transfer with a freshman or transfer starting from scratch instead of building depth behind guys a year or 2 in the program with some continuity carry over. Where this really hurts is our bench. Maybe this guy never becomes a major contributor, but he could become a guy you can trust for a few minutes here or there as a bench player.

It is not like the roster was full. Therefore, we should refer to the last person brought in to compare him to. If we had 3 scholarships available and now have 4 then we compare him to the worst of the 4 we bring in. If we don't fill the scholarships then we have to compare him to an empty chair. Regardless of his abilities, his loss makes us even worse.

when there is no depth behind starters. At the current rate, all of the starters for next season will have to play close to, if not all, 40 minutes of every single game. Not a recipe for success or players' health.

At this point, the roster lists three forwards, three guards and one center with three more guards coming in as freshmen. The front court looks pretty thin at forward particularly if Baehre plays some center as a few others have speculated. Jemison will need to take a big step forward to make an impact next season.

Bingo
The backcourt is the issue we should worry about. A 4 minute forward, ehhhh.
Still, we gave the ball away more than a veteran team should so maybe not all is lost with younger kids.

Any quality bball coach that DRad would potentially offer a job too would look at the state of our program and say no thanks! Any new coach would need no less than 3yrs to turn us into a normal looking roster and hopefully being competitive.
CBB has to use the portal because he can't keep his players long enough to train them up on his system. So he has to go out to get already college experienced kids, definitely not the way to build a program. You never get that nucleus of players that become leaders that drive the love of the program into the incoming guys. Then you have transfers that already have invested years at another school and knowing they only have one yr to play, they don't come in where they began to love the school through recruiting and don't have time to become truly invested.

With this program. Brad said he would like to play 9 or 10 players many minutes next season, but has a history of playing mainly 7 or 8. Good luck Brad. You are going to need it...

This past season, seven players logged 91% of the minutes, which included Trapp and Newman3 as the primary bench subs.

Just for chits and giggles, has anyone considered that

Brownell may have told him it's in his best interest if he transfers? I have no idea if that's the case but maybe the coaches have their eye on a guy who wants to transfer in or maybe this kid wasn't contributing to cohesion in the locker room or...
Just playing devil's advocate. I agree the situation doesn't look great but someone else mentioned the revolving door in college basketball these days and there's something to that. A lot of these guys have no concept of their own limitations as players or any concept of stick-to-it-iveness.
He had to know he was in position to play a lot more minutes the next couple of years so it had to be something else, and not necessarily because Brownell is a jerk or whatever. But, what the heck do I know. Like I said, devil's advocate.

The only reasons for this are that Brownell doesn't recruit well, doesn't develop players well, and doesn't know his players well. He's a horrible coach and many here could do better than he has.
If you submit any other reasons for consideration, you are just a Brownell lover and are completely oblivious to the fact that our basketball program is horrible and terrible and basically the worst team in any sport in the NCAA.

I've been a CBB supporter but unfortunately it is time for a change. We were middle of the pack with Tommy Bowden but obviously the right coach can change that dramatically. It would take a lot longer for football coach to build a team than a basketball coach. I think 9yrs is long enough to see what CBB has to offer. Obviously the fans are bored with mediocre results, it's time for a change.

there is no reason for Brownell to tell William to pack up and move on because he already had open scholly's to give to other prospects without losing any more players. Whatever the issue may be to William's development would still fall on Brownell because William is his recruited player, who would at least provide a body for practice even if a player comes in who would supplant William...
In short, to run William off would be short-sighted and unnecessary...

Malik William has played virtually zero at Clemson. I don't believe he got on the floor in a game this past season/year. I am curious as to what ailment or injury curtailed his activity--he did dress, I believe. If not an impairment, then who recruited him thinking he would contribute to an ACC roster? We likely will never know the rational for his absence from playing time,

William thinks he’s a better player than he really is! OR, maybe he realizes he isn’t an ACC player. In any event, someone will take his place in the lineup.
