Size of conferences

There has been a lot of chatter about how big conferences could or should be. That brought to mind the Southern Conference. I know it has had many schools come and go over the years so I looked it up. According to Wikipedia, it had the most members at any one time in 1933 at 23. Precedent has been set so schools going to 24 members would not be far from the past. I guess history could be repeating itself?

And it also broke up because it was too big and half the members were dead weight.

split had to do with size and travel costs -

teams located South and West of Appalachia split off to form SEC. About 20 years later, ACC teams split and formed due to rules on postseason play.
