Shipley

Is Shipley our most overrated offensive player (sans DJ) in the last decade? Don’t get me wrong, he’s a good, serviceable RB, but I don’t think he lives up to the hype. He runs hard and low, but constantly misreads gaps and stumbles when he has open ground. I actually think Mafah is the more well-rounded option.

He is a nice versatile back but often when he tries to make guys miss he doesnt and they shellack him.

I think they are both good, but I agree Mafah is better

No knock on shipley, because I think Mafah is going to play in the NFL.

Shipley is a marginally better receiver

Mafah is a downhill runner and doesn’t get constantly tripped up by shoestring arm tackles like shipley does. Also I think he is significantly more patient and better reading his blocks.

You’re coming down on Shipley when Mafah is the one that didn’t block on the play causing the scoop and score? Shipley ran hard and plenty of time got yards after contact. Mafah had a good run, but neither was great yesterday. Without that long 50 yard run Mafah averaged 2.5 ypc.

That scoop and score was the biggest play of the game by far. We were moving in for the final blow and that play totally changed the momentum and had the biggest impact on the game by far. Somebody really missed their block.

Exactly! It was mafah’s failed blitz pickup that lost that game, plain and simple. The balls to attack Shipley after that…

He's a good college back. He's not going to be an impact player in the NFL.

No. Shipley is a great RB and deserves to be #1.

For the life of me, I don't understand the hate for Shipley that has emerged this year. Here's my speculation:

1. Some fans just have to have a boogeyman or boogeymen to blame for their own frustration and disappointment.

2. The belief that some always have that the 2nd string guy is better than the 1st string guy. That is very evident at several positions again this year. If it turns out to be so, they can point out that they were right and knew better than the coaches all along.

3. Bandwagoning. Somebody on TNet says something about Mafah being better than Shipley, and the seed is planted. Then maybe Shipley has a miscue, or a run for no gain, or somebody doesn't like his attitude, etc. (that's usually the same people who don't like Dabo's "sunshine pumping" and positive attitude), and before you know it, Shipley sucks. Or he may not suck, but his flaws and mistakes are magnified, exaggerated, and kept in the spotlight. Before you know it, more and more people are parroting the same anti-Shipley/Pro-Mafah talking points. The power of suggestion.

Personally, I think Mafah is a great back too. I have no problem with him getting more carries. However, I've seen nothing from either one that indicates that Shipley is overrated or Mafah should be the #1 RB. I love both and I think we use both well as it is.

I agree both running backs will play in the NFL, thats crazy to have 2 NFL caliber backs stay at the same time at a school in the era of the portal. Shipley gets alot of unjustified hate on this board bc hes not as fast as Etienne, guess what no one on this team is that fast.

Dont think he’s overrated as much as he hasnt progressed since last year. He was a one man highlight reel last year-leaping linebackers and trucking safeties but teams gameplan for him and always have him covered and he hasnt added to his skillset to accommodate. He still has a burst, quicks, and cuts but could use a top end and work hands like Etienne did.

Enjoy them both now. One of the two will be in a different uniform next year.
