Shaq Roland: SCU's Martavis Bryant?
Dec 26, 2014, 3:02 PM

The similarities present themselves..
-Immense physical talents that showed flashes of greatness but were never fully realized in college, due to questionable work ethics.
-Struggled at times to maintain academic eligibility (remember Martavis missed the LSU game)
-Both had difficult family situations, and left school before many felt they were ready.
Will Roland have success in the NFL and surprise a lot of folks? I have to think things might have turned out better for him had he enrolled somewhere like Clemson, rather than.. well, you know.

I think Roland is alil worse than Bryant. He hasn't even come close to the level and season Bryant had in his final year. Roland probably won't even get drafted if that's what he's choosing to do, at least Martavis finished strong at Clemson and is proving he was worthy of coming out early in his rookie year for the Steelers.

lmfao. roland and bryant were nothing alike. bryant had a few academic difficulties and was never the greatest student but his talent is immense which he has already shown in the nfl. rolands problems were attitude and his love for the weed. how many drug tests you got to fail in columbia before you are suspended for games. shaq was suspended more than once. roland and bryant left school for entirely different reasons.

Sometimes that's just irrelevant. Take Chad Kelly for example, it really doesn't matter who his coach is. He is who he is, some kids just doesn't have what it takes to be mature enough at the college level.

Look for Shaq to go down a level if his grades allow him. He does not want to go pro. Also, this wasn't 100% his decision. he and Spurrier Jr. didn't jive.

I mean he doesn't have much of a choice if he's leaving school. He'll be an undrafted FA and have to try and make a team in camp.

Yea, exactly...
Can't remember the last highly regarded recruit to drop out right before his senior year just to go to a D2 school to "finish his degree" and then go pro...

And no...there is no comparison...
Shaq: 6'1 (arguably) with a 4.45 to 4.5 40 time
Tavis: 6'4 with a 4.43 and an unoffical 4.34 40 time...
Bryant has all the required wants as a WR at the professional level...He was extremely under utilized at Clemson...maybe just a player in the wrong system...

Wasn't Bryant's "academic" so called difficulties

just him not showing up to required study hall ?Yes ? Roland isn't half the player as Bryant and his grades kept him out of the bowl game. If he's going to the draft, he won't be drafted. If he [plans on playing at a smaller college next(which is the plan?),he has to get his a$$ in school and get some good grades LOL.

Minus the superman-like performance vs. a top 5 team in a BCS bowl.

Roland quit team. No meetings, no practice. Just, well, a quitter. Not sure, but NFL GMs may actually frown up such qualities in people they're considering investing millions in.

Uh Martavis actually had a good junior year

Everyone knew he would make it in the pro's, but also if he came back for his senior year he could play himself into first round consideration. Roland on the other hand will struggle to make a roster let alone get drafted.

Sorry if I offended anyone by comparing these 2 guys

Obviously Martavis did more at Clemson than Roland ever did as a coot, and with fewer off-field troubles.. and his measurables make him far more of a sure thing at the pro level.. They do have similarities, however, and I guess my point is in wondering how their choices of schools have affected the trajectories of their careers. Who's to say Bryant would be where he is today, had he wound up in a place like Cootlumbia? And vice versa..

Get a clue, two completely different situations...

Bryant only had minor focus issues, and he was behind 3 future NFL WR's in his first two years (Watkins, Hopkins, Brown). Did Shaq Roland help lead the coots to a BCS bowl victory, no he didn't. Shaq Roland won't even get drafted. Martavis Bryant never got suspend for looking at #### on campus computers, like Roland did. Zero similarities. Amazing how some people are just completely clueless about football.
