New Story: The Big Weigh-In

Aug 1, 2016, 3:35 PM

The Big Weigh-In

Clemson’s big weigh-in was held Tuesday afternoon in the weight room at Death Valley, and quarterback Deshaun Watson weighed in at the 218 pounds coaches told us about at head coach Dabo Swinney’s golf tournament a few weeks ago. Were there any surprises or position changes since the spring?

Was always going to be a project but it appears the eating table and weight room is in this kids future

Re: Surely LaSamuel Davis weight is incorrect

Aug 1, 2016, 4:05 PM

I believe I heard Dabo (or one of the other coaches) say "That's progress" as Davis was walking away. But yea, definitely gonna be a LOT of weight room and training table in his future.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

a second voices says "that's 12 pounds..."

Aug 1, 2016, 5:28 PM

definitely going to need to pile in the calories and throw around the weights but honestly, he looks like he's not going to carry a lot of weight... he will probably max out at 225 unless he's got more physical maturation to do...

He needs to put on a healthy 50lbs to be a 3 down DE

Re: He'll redshirt just to get bigger...

Aug 4, 2016, 9:55 AM

The only way he gains 50 pounds is if we send him to work out with the Russian Olympic team during his red shirt year.

Re: New Story: The Big Weigh-In

Aug 1, 2016, 3:47 PM

Explained in the article - Cain still fulfilling obligations to Dabo as per his discipline.

Not much to dislike about these results - with a couple exceptions. Davis at 208? He's never seeing the field at that weight.

Amir Trapp coming in at 5'7, 161....??
Sammy Davis won't see the field unless he puts on another 30 lbs.
Skalski will probably drop a few lbs; Chad Smith may want to as well to get his athleticism back.
Jabril Robinson at 259 is not good at all.
You'd like to see McCloud higher than 183 (unless that's a mistake) but not a terrible number.

Other than those, no complaints here - lots of great numbers along both lines and at skill positions.

Re: New Story: The Big Weigh-In

Aug 1, 2016, 5:29 PM

I wish I could read Dabo's mind during the weigh in. He can look at these guys and see who was committed and all in during the summer work out. Without calling names that I don't do but, lineman on both sides of the line looked to have more flab than muscle. Now is the time for the fall practice without that much weight lifting time left. So, if I was the HC, A Few would be lifting after practice to get some of the jiggle out before season games begin!!! If you can't give a 100% when nobody is looking, then just give a 110% when people are looking.

Great job to those that busted it this summer. It's hard to judge by just some number and let's remember that some of these kids are totally transforming their bodies. For example, Amir Trapp might be way to small this year, but he's gonna be in our program for several years and I wouldn't be surprised to see a kid like that be a home run in a few years.

It's going to take LaSam Davis being locked in his dorm room with HgH, A bow flex, and gallons of bacon grease to get to DE ideal weight...why not consider moving him to a different position given his speed and athleticism?

I keep thinking Vic was 235 lbs. Maybe a solid 25 to 30 lbs would do it?

He just does not look like the body type that will easily put on weight. I will be interested to see his weight next year!

I think Vic hovered around 245-250...which still isn't ideal. I guess that's why the Falcons moved him to OLB

Vic hovered 230-235 and gained a bunch for the combine

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Here is my thing.

Aug 1, 2016, 11:53 PM

This. He was actually < 230lbs his entire time at Clemson. Shot up to 246 for the combine. Probably around 250lbs now but with as much time as he spends with his hand in the dirt in Atlanta's scheme, I still think he needs another 20+ lbs to reach his peak at the next level. He has great technique and speed but those tackles in the NFL are no joke.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Here is my thing.

Aug 2, 2016, 6:13 AM

I agree with you completely. But at around 235 at Clemson, Vic was pretty darn good. :) I for one hope that if LD gains 25-30 lbs, that maybe he can be successful on the field at Clemson too! Agree that for the NFL he would have to gain even more weight.....but maybe 25 lbs more he will be able to contribute at Clemson next year. In 6 months he gained 12 lbs. Maybe in a year he will manage it??

I will keep my fingers crossed for him.

Re: Here is my thing.

Aug 2, 2016, 8:32 AM [ in reply to Re: Here is my thing. ]

Vic was an All-American in 2013 and he was playing at like 220 lbs. He was obviously built much differently than Davis, but you can hear Dabo saying "that's 12 lbs" when LaSamuel got on the scale. If he can do that in a summer, I see no reason why he couldn't get up to 230ish. He's got a frame that will definitely fill out.

Davis has to decide if he wants to gain weight.

Aug 1, 2016, 9:46 PM

There are always a few players that either take a long time before they fully buy into the program, or they never buy into the program.
LaSamuel needs to decide if he is going to work out, lift like he should, and eat like he should.
They have told him all he needs to do, but he hasn't been doing them so far.

Yes he was signed as a project. Yes, he has a very slight frame and will never be up to 260. But he has to put forth the effort to try to get the maximum out of what he has.
He didn't make it right out of HS because he didn't put the effort into the classroom to pass the classes he needed to.
It is all in between the ears and in the heart.

Some guys get more out of what they should have with the talent and ability that God gave them.
Some guys get less then they should, because they wasted the talent, under achieved, and didn't want it as badly as others do.

Each of us must decide if we will live to the best that we can be, or not. It is our decisions alone.

I pray LaSamuel and all of the Tigers work hard to the best that they can be, because they want to.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Davis has to decide if he wants to gain weight.

Aug 2, 2016, 8:34 AM

Clelin Ferrell was a pretty slender guy in high school and got up to 265 lbs. I think he was about 220 when he got here. Richard Yeargin, same thing. Played linebacker and safety in high school, came here at like 220-230 lbs and is up over 260. Davis will get bigger, but he's a guy that you can't really expect a ton from for 2-3 years until he fills out more.
