It really doesn't have anything to do with Clemson football but neither does 1/2 the stuff on here.
I noticed that some of the posters seemed to know about weapons. Just was trying not to get in trouble for what I wanted to know and people get touchy when it is mentioned.
Illegals - crime has increased.
We have been told to protect ourselves.
I was just looking for different options.

Valid question. Some people have nothing better to do than act like embicils and attack. Makes them feel better about themselves. I don't profess to be an "expert, but I don't think the what is as important as the comfort level your wife and daughter have with the weapon (which will come with much range time and forethought of what they will do if the need arises). Hesitation or indecision can be deadly, especially if inaction leads to an offender taking the weapon from them. I would choose something that fits their hands and they are entirely comfortable with. Revolvers are always the simplest to use but have limitations with 6 rounds. They often involve more kick back. .380 semi autos typically are smaller than 9 mm, etc. while having a decent punch. Whatever you decide I would suggest double action (the trigger will actuate the hammer upon pulling it v. having to keep the trigger back and safety on while carrying or hope that you will have time to rack it to enable firing when needed- semi autos). Hope this is of some help.

Do you live in the city or country? Are you wanting home protection or protection away from home?
Home: shotgun, big dog, street lights. All are good ideas
Away: a small pepper spray is useful. Carrying a gun comes with a ton of responsibility and training. The best protection is situational awareness.

I mean actual bear spray that they sell in Alaska and Montana. And get the big cans, and teach the girls how to actually use it. That stuff will put any threat DOWN. And you don’t have to have good aim nor panic about whether to pull the trigger to end a life. And you don’t have to face wrongful death lawsuits.

Listen man, I shoot and train A LOT. I reload, I shoot extreme long range, competitions, etc. I'm by no means what I'd consider an expert, but please do not take advice for any Tom #### or Harry on here. Most people have guns but never shoot them, and even worse shoot them just enough to pull themselves into bmthink8ng they're an expert.
Less lethal options like bear spray wasp spray and garbage like that are safety blanket syndrome purchases. They make you feel like you're protected, but you aren't. The only thing that ACTUALLY protects you is a gun, and capable gun, and the skills and ability to deploy it under stress.
Just my .02 to take with a grain of salt also, but my recommendation is a gun, more than likely a pistol based on size, and actually taking it serious enough to buy it, train with it, and get a CWP for it. Anyone that thinks bear spray, and knife, or wasp spray that shoots 20ft is a legitimate self defense tool is welcome to come with me to any training session, because I've personally witnessed even buddies with good firearm skills immediately break down the second something as simple as a shot timer is present. Don't get lulled into sleep thinking "I can do this or that". You're almost never as good as you think you'll be in those situations, and very spray is no match for firearms, ever. If you need further help I'd be happy to help point you in a more specific direction, just reply here before you Tmail me because I don't check it often. I'm in the Greenville, SC area BTW.
I do appreciate people taking it seriously and making it a priority in their lives, because the world isnt getting any more safer.

If you want in-home close range protection consider a shotgun. It’s point and shoot without having to aim or be a good shoot. Again that’s close range, like in the same room or very close proximity. Shorter barrel is easier to maneuver and the shot pattern will be larger covering a larger area. If the person is new to firearms and/or smaller framed consider a 20 gauge.
For personal carry there are many small handgun options. 9mm is my personal choice. Sig P365.
As mentioned above with any firearm please take safety and training courses. And go to a range or somewhere you can safely fire it. You can’t be prepared to use a firearm if you aren’t trained on handling it and fire it regularly.

22mag Keltec. 30 clip. If you have to use you have enough rds and 22 mag will do damage. I have one and so does my wife. Where they r in my house is our business. Not hard to train with. Good luck be safe

I'd recommend a .22 revolver, training and practice. With practice, she might move to a more powerful firearm. A Charter Arms Pathfinder or a Smith & Wesson 43c might be a good choice, 8 rounds, concealable, light recoil. I'd suggest buying 2. One kept bedside and one to carry... which means more training. Training for concealed carry and the act of carrying tends to make one significantly more situationally aware, which makes you safer. Developing the discipline to carry is important. There's nothing more worthless than a gun that's not available when you need it.
FWIW, my hope is to never, ever have to use mine.

A can of hornet spray in the car. That stuff is crippling.
If they have comfort around firearms, get one that is comfortable for her. I told my daughter just go to an armory that has a range, and try out various models. "Handguns are like running shoes, you will know when you find the right fit."
If you make a mistake and taze/spray an innocent person, you can always apologize. Might not get that chance with a handgun.

Get one of those loud noise makers they can attach to their purse, clothing, keys, etc. All they have to do is pull it and it makes a loud noise that alerts others of danger. You’re not going to kill anyone with it, but it is a deterrent.

Shotgun...you can keep it under the bed and keep it loaded. This happened to a friend's elderly mother in GA. Someone broke into her home. She didn't do exactly what was told and came out of her room with it in her hands. It was taken from her and she was assaulted and robbed. Stay in the room, get behind the bed and when that door opens, pull the trigger.
With shotguns, all you have to do is towards something and pull the trigger. Handguns need to be aimed with more accuracy. Also, shotguns are LOUD and scare the bejeezus out of someone when they are not expecting it. I hope and pray this never happens to anyone on this board or their relatives. Scary stuff.

Put dusk to dawn led lights on each corner of house, if not more (I have double lights on each corner, to allow complete coverage of land around the house). A well lighted house is one of the biggest deterrents to crime (assuming they are not all well lit, LOL). Then, install cameras that are easily spotted (but not reachable without a ladder...cameras deter day time crime). Keep shrubs cut low around house.
As to guns, ladies seem to adapt to revolvers easier than those that require a pulling a slide. You don't want anything with a large kick, so stay away from higher calibers... being scared to pull the trigger due to the kick is hard to get over for women.
I like the 22 WMR revolver for the situation you are describing. Highly accurate, great range, good knock down (many will not agree, but this caliber travels at around 1900 fps at 40 grains, little less than a 223 with nearly the same weight, but a whole lot less kick, and available in a revolver). This same round can also be shot in a 22 WMR rifle, for greater effectiveness at long ranges.
If you are concerned with conceal ability, then maybe a 32 or 380 caliber. If you want more info on that, let me know.
It takes a lot of shooting to get a woman used to the kick or a larger caliber. In no situation should a woman use any of the lightweight revolvers in the 38 and higher calibers...the lighter the weight, the more the kick. If you choose these, be sure to always buy the lightest grain bullets to lower the kick (maybe have someone like me reload special cartridges for you).
This Heritage Rough Rider revolver is very affordable, and has the ability to shoot 22 LR or 22 WMR by just changing the cylinder, included.

Stun guns and mace/pepper spray are good for people not comfortable with guns. My wife is a nurse and has had a pepper spray on her key chain for as long as I can remember. The problem with a firearm is that for most it is a good way to lose their job if they pack it all the time. But there are no rules about non-deadly devices however.
More importantly training in situational awareness is the best defense of all. Not blindly getting yourself into a vulnerable situation to begin with is actually better than any weapon. It will reduce an unlikely (but important) need to self defense to almost nothing.
All this said, I am 60 years old. I have only known two people in my entire life that have been attacked at random. So it comes down to the company you keep, the places you go, and when you go there. Again situational awareness. I always told my daugthers to be home by 10:30 because nothing good happens to women that are out and about in the wee hours of the day. Statistics say that on a Friday/Saturday nights after 10:00pm 1 out of 4 drivers have had too much to drink. 1 out of 13 every other night of the week. The vast majority of sexual assaults happen to adult women that are out late at night. The point being that often we set ourselves up for trouble because we lack awareness and even if we do we fail to take appropritate action to avoid problems.

I bought my wife a 9 shot Rueger wheel gun 32 cal. Taught her on the range but not how ti kill, I taught her gun safety first. How to handle the weapon and not shoot herself or anyone around. Then I moved to marksmanship. Main thing I tried to instill in her was "Never pull out the gun unless you are willing to pull the trigger". Unless you are willing to take down the threat with lethal violence, why have it in your hand..??
Hard to teach PANIC when being confronted but you still have to execute to protect yourself..

A self defense shotgun is the only way to go if “defense” is the objective. Learning curve is short, reliability is high, efficacy is high. Collateral damage can be an issue, however.
Any decent tactical arms store can set you up.

It's actually not though. Take a class with one. Under stress, short stroking a pump shotgun is a very big problem and happens quite a bit. A semi auto you wouldn't have to worry about that, except semi autos are notoriously unreliable unless you drop some serious coin. (Benelli M2)
Also, shotguns indoors don't actually have a spread like people think they do. It takes yards to spread out into a pattern. At 12 feet it's throwing baseballs down a hallway, not spraying the whole wall. Listen to Travis Haley talk about it. I mean it's bigger than 9mm or something for sure, but considering the limited capacity and reliability issues under stress it's just not a slam dunk recommendation like people think. Not saying it's bad. Just not that simple.
