We Lost a Great Tiger This Weekend

Sep 20, 2022, 1:02 PM

My grandfather, Johnny Evans, AKA "Papa," passed away a few weeks shy of his 95th Birthday on Sunday.

He was in the Clemson Class of 1948 but graduated early in 1947.

I had a hard enough time at Clemson just going to class but my grandfather's list of activities is pretty staggering. I've attached his Senior Year Taps list of extra-curriculars, which includes Blue Key President, Tiger Brotherhood, and Phi Kappa Phi.

Not mentioned in this laundry list: he also played Taps and Reveille on the bugle for the Corps of Cadets every evening and morning--something that probably didn't make him incredibly popular to around campus!

Most of his professors are buried on Cemetery Hill and/or have buildings named after them to this day.

Papa taught engineering for a time at the Citadel after he graduated and married my grandma, served in the Army in a psy ops unit with Madison Ave "Mad Men" during the Korean War while stationed in Germany, and later settled in the Charleston area where he worked for Westvaco until his retirement in the early 1990s.

He was a lifelong learner, a Christian, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a true Clemson Gentleman. He will be missed.

Thanks for posting his TAPS list, guess the younger generation will have those online which just isn't the same. He sounds like a wonderful man.

It sounds like you had an amazing grandfather who did his job on this earth and left you a better person with some great memories of him.
